indeed. i was in your position a year ago (sort of), just to let you know - unless you defiantly know that you are going to take your laptop everyday to school then there is no point in getting one. i bought an alienware back before i knew anything about mac (i know, naive) and thats what im typing on now. i thought i was going to use it at school loads and it started of using it in september, got bored of using it in november / december.

also im still waiting for this dam promotion, i have enough money to buy it even without the discount (looks like the job at comet paid off:p) but i just want to know if they are going to be doing anything

o well - i shall have to wait, im only waiting until 9th though. maybe the 13th as a max. after that im buying it. been waiting since end of may, getting bored....

so last year they released it on the 11th or 12th of september apparently. does anyone know what the UK promo was, but also what they were offering in the USA to compare it to.......

The offer last year was an £85 rebate off an iPod nano - either a free silver one, or money towards a colour one which were £99.

I don't know what the US offer was, sorry.

I only thought about getting a laptop, becausebi know that the second year students that are on the same course of me always have their laptops and now I will be a second year student. Plus we only have 2 very old slow computers in our room and a trip to the puvary is pointless as it's always full!

As long as I get a mac before mid October at the latest I don't mind waiting - I still need to sell my of anyway :(

I know because I let my friends to buy macbooks so I could sell in my country :p

When I go to the Store link I now get this:

"We'll be back soon.
We are busy updating the store for you and will be back shortly."

..I hope, I hope! :D

It's back up now - no details on the back to school promo tho ...

Are they more likely to do it when they release the new MBP? Or will they not bother at all. I mean, demand will be soaring with the new iPods and the (forecasted) new MBPs.

Poor students.

Back on the 22nd, so couple of weeks worth of Tuedays/Friday to go. Hope all the nanos don't sell out before the promo starts...?

I rang apple yesterday and they said they have no idea when the student offer kicks in.. it wont be announced it will just happen!!!!!!???????????
gggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

i do hope it comes out soon. im going to an apple store today to check out the iMac and macbook, and mbp for a friend.

im going to buy them on friday even if the thing hasnt come out. i need to get this sorted out soon which is a bit annoying and im also quite anxious, ive been waiting for about 5 months now for this effing offer to appear.

still even if it comes out after i get the computer, as long as its within 14 days im good since i can always take it back and get the promo deal - by LAW :p

I've heard a few people say this. What law is this exactly? Has anyone had experience with apple actually honouring something like thing? I know when people buy new macs and a revision comes out a few days later they pay a restocking fee in order to get the new one, but that wouldn't apply here (probably) as you'd keep the same mac, instead just want the offer tacked on...

I'm not convinced.

Nor am I convinced - I think this may be someone's interpretation of the Distant Selling Regulations but this only applies to mail-order type sales (ie at a distance) - by law the seller can return goods within 7 days of their receipt but must be as supplied (unused) and returned at the purchaser's expense. This obviously does not apply to sales in-store.

Apple, however, have there own return procedures but they are not law......

Or if you're buying it from the Higher Ed online store...

I think I'm definitely going to wait until the end of next week (as everyone knows, Tuesdays are days when Apple launches things/changes things etc) until making a further decision. As people have said, last year was the 12th so I'm guessing late this week/early next.

We'll see. I just wish they'd hurry it up.

Last year the UK promotion started at Midday on the 12th Sept which was a Wednesday and ran until 30th October.

The US promotion always seems to start roughly on the 5th June and end by the 16th Sept every year, so in the past it has overlaped by a few days with the UK promotion.

So this Friday (12th) or early next week is a good bet IF they are going to run it this year, which of course Apple being Apple will never confirn.

So as usual in the UK we just have to be patient and keep our fingers crossed like good little boys and girls

Just to clear it up, if you buy from Apple in anyway but in-store (i.e. over the phone or internet) then you have a 7 day "cooling off" period. So you can return the product unused, at your own expense, for a full refund.
Apple are not allowed to charge a restocking fee.
Like a lot of companies they may have their own policies, but a lot of consumer law supersedes this.

I'm hoping tomorrow for the offer.
Got paid today, so that would be fine by me! :D

This is The Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000.

Apple's return policy is different - 14 days change of mind - item can be used and still returned - no restocking fee but they deduct "carriage costs" of £60 (inc VAT) for items over £300 (ex VAT). Whether this is fair and reasonable is open to debate. I certainly returned a MacBook last November but was not charged this carriage. It was about 10 days after the purchase.

Under consumer protection you can return the item (unopened and at your expense) within 7 days.
Under Apple's return policy you can return the item (used) within 14 days and possibly have to pay £60 for the privilege.

well i went to the apple store and the person said yes, and was either manager or high up

Just had this conversation with an apple store assistant online

Looking like next week guys!

Just had this conversation

Me: its just if it has an iPod offer that would be excellent right now, my partner has just lost her iPod
Him: Fantastic
Him: Yes it is a great offer, especially as the new iPods have just been launched
Him: So that is an extra bonus!
Me: ha yeah
Him: Yes good idea to hold off
Him: ;)
Me: so fingers crossed by mid next week
Me: ha thank you
Him: No problem!

This would be fantastic. The iPhone comes put on pay as you go on tuesday the 16th, this could be when they anounce the free iPod offer . Either way I'm selling my current iPod Touch, and getting the 8GB iPhone on Pay as you go :D. The iPod Touch is fantastic, but the only thing it's missing is unlimited data anywere ( were service is avaliable ), where as the PAYG iPhone has this included at no additional cost.

Still hope it happens, so that I can finally get a iMac next week or so and get some more money towards the iPhone, after selling the free iPod

Woooooo!

If you have BT internet at home though you can access the BT wireless hot spots for free. Depends where you are in the country in terms of how many you have around you, but I know down in London (the central part at least) is very well covered.
