In the past, redirecting it to a local UPS store has always added an extra day to the delivery process. So, instead of a Friday delivery, it will be at least a Saturday pickup.
And it will be again this year. @Laryl has places to go and does not want around for a late UPS delivery on Friday at some random time...

Me too as far as delivery late at night. I’ve got places I need to be so I’m hoping they will let me hold for pickup, but I’m guessing it’s going to be a long worrisome day not being home.

Congratulations Apple….you have greatly improved the pre-order process v.s getting up at 1am years ago. Earlier in the week selected the iPhone 16 Pro Max, saved for order day. 6 minuets after Apple Store came online clicked on my saved pre-order selection and completed the order. Wow…that’s the way to do business

For those choosing to go to the store to pick it up, why? Some reasons I can think of include:

  • You don't work from home and don't want to risk a package coming when you're not home to sign for it
  • You don't want it to or can't have it come to work for some reason
  • You want the comfort of having a specific time (at the store) when you can get your phone
  • You, for some reason, have to have it at the absolutely earliest possible second on Friday, and the store pickup accomplishes that
  • You don't want to risk getting a damaged phone at home and then having to deal with that headache
  • You don't want your wife/husband/girlfriend/mistress/dog or other cohabitant to know
  • You need the store's help in transferring to a new phone
  • You're trading in and need to go to the store to most easily accomplish that process, or simply don't want to put your current phone in the mail (FedEx, etc.), given some of the horror stories that are out there
  • You want to be part of the "launch day social experience" at an Apple Store
What else is there?

I'm just wondering what would incentivize people enough to endure the absolute zoo of being at an Apple Store on a launch day.

Full disclosure: mine are being delivered at home because there is no way I want to endure the zoo experience, plus I have no reason to avoid the extreme convenience of home delivery.

Apple certainly knows how to make it easy to give them money. I’m a sucker for it.

Well, to be fair, that's only because this year's iPhone is underwhelming. Don't get me wrong, - I ordered one, like I always do, because I'm a sheep, but... I can't see people losing their minds to order this year.

in the beginning i did UPS drop off at my house but i started doing ISPU because I was able to get 8 am pickup easier then doing the ups pick up and having to call and do all that. Also they have separate lines for pick up at least at my store there is not many slots giving between 8-10 so im in and out within 10 minutes.

Availability. Had to cancel and re-order like twice now, and with shipping dates slipping, picking up is the soonest for me. I also want to trade-in in a store, so I was heading that way over the weekend anyways.

The original plan was to have it shipped to the office, our logistics guys can sign for it. But alas, that didn't pan out.

I deliberately avoid the stores in the nicer parts of town because those always have a huge line. The store in my local failing mall has only ever made me wait maybe 10 minutes.

Mine is being delivered to my house, there was a glitch when trying to select in-store.

I selected in-store for my 14 Pro Max and iPad M4, in and out in less than 10 minutes for both.

I normally do store pick up because I’m on the iPhone Upgrade Program and will have to turn the old device in anyway. It keeps me from having to mail my old device in and just give it directly to Apple upon pick up of the new phone.

This year will be the first time in a few years that I opted for delivery just because I have work. I was able to request to WFH so I can be there for delivery.

Why couldn’t I just do store pickup for Saturday? Because I’m irrationally impatient to have the new phone in my hand lol. I want it on release day 😅

I've had the same positive experiences you've had with delivery except they were all ISPU. They've refined the process so you have check-in windows that you absolutely have to stick to or they won't see you (earlier the better), and things run even smoother when you get fast reps who like their jobs. I haven't had an ISPU that went longer than 20 mins in over 6 years.

On the flip side, all my nightmare scenarios and almost not getting my phone delivered at all came from dealing with UPS or FedEx. I don't like to disparage service workers but deliveries are honestly a crapshoot and you only think it's convenient until you're chasing down trucks who drive by your house on purpose or just lose your packages altogether.

Everything is relative when it comes down to it. I'm glad for whoever finds the method that works for them. 👍

My reasons (in no particular order):
  • I figure the iPhone shipments get shipped to the stores first (because they have them at 8am launch day) so less chance some transit delay keeps me from getting it
  • I usually can get a 8a appt and get it on my way to work or if not working that day, I'm rockin the new phone by 9a
  • Apple Store is 5 min from my house
  • I control when I get my phone

Same here. My I’m mess that 10 min from the Apple Store. I got an 0830 appt and UPS wouldn’t deliver until later in the afternoon
