I guess I don't really understand why people wanted to reserve, rather than pre-order.

It was fairly apparent to me that a reservation gave me a spot in line, where the preorder actually placed an order/charged me, and guaranteed (as much as could be) an iPhone 4 on launch day.

Was there any benefit to reservations over preordering?

Chris
Well I won't have the money till the weekend so a reservation still gets me an iPhone. Reservations get in the store before all others waiting in line.

I reserved one for launch day pick-up and later was able to get one ordered for launch day home delivery. As long as I get a FedEx tracking number on 6/23, I'll be canceling my reservation. It's not worth my time to try to pick up the reserved phone if I'm only going to turn around and sell it; it's gonna be chaos at the Apple Store. Besides, profiteering off of this launch is kinda low-down and karma's a bitch.

The White iPhones are coming end of Summer, 64GB versions only

I have a trusted source who explained why no White iPhone 4 s are being released. They are only going to be 64GB versions, and at a higher price point ($499 with 2 year agreement).
Not only does the white iPhone look exclusive, but by being 64GB it is also superior.

Personally I think this is a great marketing strategy, and is a killer idea.

The issues with supply of the 64GB memory modules is what is holding up the manufacturing and hence deployment of these phones.

This is my order status from ATT. I preordered in the ATT store. I was clocked out at 17:09.

Edit: I was wrong about Apple not doing this in the past. I forgot.

I still think Apple is doing the wrong thing by not allowing people to know those details in advance.

That means that pre-authorization does not guarantee you will receive an iPhone on the 25th. It is on a first come, first serve basis.

Is pre-authorization the same thing as making a reservation?

It still says that my reservation will be held until the close of business on June 24.

Yes.

But, if they are out of stock when you arrive you will not be able to receive an iPhone on that day.

So why did Apple accept reservations at all then. I've never heard of a business holding a reservation for a day that the product or service may not be available. Could you imagine reserving a table at a restaurant just to arrive and have them tell you that they won't have a table available the entire day?

The reservations are held for people so you get your iPhone before the general public without a reservations, but it is still on a first come first serve basis.

This was a Seinfeld episode.

IF this is true, I am holding off on upgrading one of my lines till the white is available.

That makes absolutely no sense at all, Apple won't do that. The white will have the same models as now and there won't be any 64GB models until next year. Jobs would announce the details like that at the keynote. People are going to be extremely upset about not hearing the details on the white 64GB models months in advance. Remember, majority of people are making 2 years contract on those iPhones.

Just like Apple didn't release 16GB iPhone 1st gen for years right....oh wait they released it 6 months after......

I don't want to wait fedex guy all day long at home... because I'm busy. :D

I have three and I'm planning on selling 2 of them.

AT&T isn't resetting the eligibility. I have been able to purchase 3, two 16 GB at $199 and one 32 GB at $299. I have a single line account.

One of each will be for sale at their $599 and $699 price points respectively.

THANKS AT&T!

iPhone 3G White only came in 16 GB version. If you wanted 8 GB you had only black as a choice.

Why might orders be so brisk?
  1. iPhone 4 perceived as faster 4G connection.
  2. People actually expect video conferencing to work before 2011.
  3. Fell in love with new design.
Don't get me wrong. It's a nice upgrade to pacify users until 4G is available but people are acting like this iPhone is the only fresh water after a natural disaster.

People like me.... that are upgrading from the 1st gen iPhone.....

How is this possible? A niche computer company has no clue how to be successful in the cell phone market.

I don't really consider Apple as a computer company in the first place. They are more of a complete system integration company that uses both software and hardware as one to create products.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

This is nuts. Why is demand so much higher than for the 3gs?
