Not to mention it is not even 64 gigs. I don't get the hype this time, I really don't....except for the people that skipped the 3GS and still have their 3G or 1st gen.

I agree with you. I have the 3GS and am available for the upgrade. I tried once yesterday and the system crashed so I went on with my day. I don't see the big deal about the new one. It has some nice new features (the screen is the biggest one imho), but people are acting like this is the first iphone ever to be released. As someone else mentioned earlier in the thread I wonder if the iPhone 4 designator is confusing people that it's actually 4G. If it was, that WOULD get me scrambling to buy one :)

As it stands I'll pick one up in the store when I can just walk in and grab it.

Well, that sucks for sure and I thought I should have ordered it yesterday...but well, I try to take it with philosophy and tell myself that in the meantime I can watch people doing their user review and see what needs to be checked when I will get mine...you know those usual my screen is too yellow! my lock button has some play in it, etc...I will also be able to play around with my 3GS and iOS4 organizing everything well so it gets ready for my "precious" when I will get it...I guess in a month from now when I see the stocking issue...

Well, I hope they shut off pre-orders before they go and sell out the phones for the next 2 months.

Actually I have to disagree. And I don't think they will. If people see a preorder date for 3 months down the road it is only going to increase the hype = more sales = more profits for Apple.

And it will be interesting to see how successful it really is.

So lets take a look back to last year. How did Apple retail stores handle this?
Did pre-order in store pick-ups get front of line status? Did "reserve" orders get priority over walk-ins. What am I missing here?

This is a whole new ballgame. 10x the amount of sales compared to the 3GS launch. I wouldn't take into account what has happened in the past. All bets are off now.

At my store atleast, which may or may not be representative of every other store:

One giant line before the store opened.
Five minutes before the store opened, Employee asked everyone in the line to show their printout or checked their name against a printout that the Apple employeeh had with the names of everyone who reserved.

If you did not have a reservation you were moved to a seperate line.

EVERYONE who had a reservation was given priority. This means that the guy who was there for around 10 hours and was 5th in the overall line had to wait behind everyone else, even the joe blows who walked up at 6:59 (but had a reservation).

WTF are you talking about . Preordering from Apple.com gives a delivery date. Are you trying to say that preorders WONT arrive ?

No, I'm confident that they will arrive.

There are people who keep claiming on the boards that despite this statement:

And this statement "Please note that your reservation will be held until close of business on June 24."

That people who have reserved an iphone should line up at 4am because of fine print at the bottom of the e-mail stating that availability is not guaranteed and is on a first-come, first served basis. My point is that this language is *also* at the bottom of the confirmation e-mail for preorders.

I wish. If that was the case, I wouldn't have to explain to them that it is not 4g capable, and that At&t doesn't have a 4g network.

I'm curious. Do these people know what a "4G network" actually is -- beyond "it's newer and must be better"?

Well I was able to do two preorders yesterday on Apple's site. Already PAID for (not a reservation). It says I will have my phones on the 24th.:D

Incorrect. Maybe on yours but mine doesnt say anything of the sort....

So what happened last year (3GS) with the reserve vs. pre-order vs. walk in?
Was there a separate line for each?
I'm still on the iphone 2g.

Last year I walked up on the day of, waiting in line about 10 minutes, and walked out with an iPhone 3GS. No reserve or pre-order. The girl did say it had been a busy morning, but by lunchtime it was all over.

Japan is still in the dark ages and not giving any shipping estimates or sold out notification whatsoever. They are still taking pre-orders as of this moment, even though it is doubtful they actually have stock, and all they are saying is "your iPhone will ship on or after June 24th, with no guarantees".

My prediction is there will be alot of unhappy campers who pre-ordered early but won't be getting their phone until July 14th.

I waited in line for a total of 2 and a half hours and was #14 in line at the store I reserved at. My chances look good for the 24th, according to the lady who helped me.

Meanwhile, eagerly following the CEO of Softbank (Japan's iPhone carrier) on Twitter, to see the latest news..

Awesome, now we are getting somewhere. I can't imagine Apple would throw out the baby with the bath water regarding crowd management and online reservations.

Who had an experience with pre-orders and picking up on site? or are all pre-orders delivered?

i believe they are all delivered to the address you have with att.

dilemma

So now I have a dilemma......
I'm pretty sure I got through on AT&T's site yesterday, because the iPhone shows up on the Oder Status page, but I have not received a confirmation email.
I do have a reservation at the Apple Store on the 24th to pick one up.

Do I wait to see if the iPhone shows up from AT&T, or go to Apple Store and wait in line?

Will they even give me one at the Apple Store, even if I ordered one through AT&T??

What would YOU do?

same story here

I confess that I actually spent the whole day (some would argue "compulsively") trying to pre-order ... as I was going about my work.

By about 4:30 PST, I successfully made it through and pre-ordered a 32 GB iPhone 4 which will arrive June 24th. Given I was literally retrying every few minutes (sometimes waiting, say, 10 minutes or longer as I was doing stuff for work) from about 9:30 AM through 4 PM ... and just *barely* made it before Apple sold out ... just proves how difficult it was to make it through. I was tempted several times to just give up. But I am glad I didn't.

+1 :)

Well seeing as the preorder will show up on the doorstep.... And even if the phone is activated, $200 + the $375 ETF + approx $50 act fee, + 1 month of data ($15) is $700.

My guess is come the 24th / 25th these phones will be SELLING (not just for sale ) on ebay for >$1K to the rich lazy people who want to be first.
After the E-bay fees and maybe PayPal fees, it won't be as much as you think even IF you find someone who would pay 1K. Then, you are also running the risk of the buyer coming back later and saying he didn't receive the phone and chargeback on your account (seller protection isn't THAT foolproof btw).

Too much risk for the return. Good luck and I hope you get all the money you deserve for robbing someone else of an iPhone on June 24.
