Yes. Your new iPhone arrives ready to start using it. All you have to do is set it up in iTunes. There’s no need to call or visit a store to get started.

yup, just like he said, and everyone already knows. you have to activate your phone.

Sigh...

If you read the US site

Can I buy an iPhone without an AT&T contract?
No. iPhone requires a two-year AT&T wireless service contract.

With a 2 year contract the iPhone is £280 in the uk

The £599 price is unlocked, contract free

Oh yea its ssssooooo cheap then - i will get two - And the monthly pay out will be about 45 quid to get a reasonable tariff - are you all brainwashed or something??!!

Well I only wanted to spend my hard earned money on one, but with the system glitches I was charged 299+tax from att for one and 299+tax from apple for one and both for a single line  they have already charged my card  for them and both have a delivery date of the 24th :D . I didn't plan on buying any for selling but looks like I will sell the extra one for at least what I paid for it, but I might just sit on it for awhile to see if they retroactively charge me more for one of them.

Exactly what I did. And guess what, the glitch is still in place. You can keep ordering.

What truly blows my mind is that they've sold this many without people even seeing one in "the flesh". This thing had better completely blow people away when it gets in their hands, given their expectations, or Apple will have a hard time selling the next version. There is a downside to having too much hype.

YEAH... Apple better..., better.., well they just BETTER, or we'll, we'll...

yup, just like he said, and everyone already knows. you have to activate your phone.

You don't have to activate it before you sell it again. Nobody forces you to activate a phone! What about the people that are waiting for a birthday? Or if I bought one just to sell and I plan on keeping my 3GS?

You do NOT have to activate the phone if you have it shipped to your house. You can give it away. Sell it to a friend. Whatever you want. BUT, you will still be in your two year contract paying for the phone!

Part of me thinks that they purposefully produced a limited quantity for the initial batch in order to have those magic words, 'sold out'.

That's just moronic. Put away your tin foil hat.
Companies only do that when they don't have confidence in their product.
That is NOT the case with Apple and the iPhone 4.

Reservations

You are chatting with Nicole J, an Apple Expert

Hi, my name is Nicole J. Welcome to Apple!

Hi!

Hello!

How may I assist you today?

Yesterday I reserved an iPhone 4 and received an email confirming my pickup time is June 24 starting at 7:00 a.m.
but the bottom of the email says this
"Pre-authorization does not guarantee iPhone availability at an Apple Retail Store. iPhone is sold on a first-come, first-served basis."

Okay.

What does that mean exactly?

I'm happy to assist with that.

That means that pre-authorization does not guarantee you will receive an iPhone on the 25th. It is on a first come, first serve basis.

Is pre-authorization the same thing as making a reservation?

It still says that my reservation will be held until the close of business on June 24.

Yes.

But, if they are out of stock when you arrive you will not be able to receive an iPhone on that day.

So why did Apple accept reservations at all then. I've never heard of a business holding a reservation for a day that the product or service may not be available. Could you imagine reserving a table at a restaurant just to arrive and have them tell you that they won't have a table available the entire day?

The reservations are held for people so you get your iPhone before the general public without a reservations, but it is still on a first come first serve basis.

Okay. Well thanks for your clarification.

Have a good day!

Thank you for visiting the Apple Store. We appreciate your business. If you would like more help, please chat with us again.

Guess I don’t have to worry about being an early adopter guinea pig  By the time I order, there will be 2 million sold ahead of me!

The funniest thing is that if you guys think the pre-order / reservation stuff has been a nightmare, just wait until we get to the activations. If it's anything like the original iPhone launch, it will take at least a day to get activated.

Such hostility. Yikes! I thought I'd share my good fortune with everyone, but I will keep it to myself.

Your "good fortune" is 1) ripping off AT&T and 2) preventing other users from getting an iPhone at the upgrade price when they want it. That's why people consider you an ass.

But it doesn't matter: Apple/AT&T have a week to figure out which people have multiple orders on a single line and cancel all except the first one. That's surely what they will do. If we're lucky, they'll cancel all of your orders.

Step 1 for iPhone 4 - update itunes

Its live

I work at an At&t device support center, and I have to explain that,

1. It's not the iPhone 4g, it's the iPhone 4.

2. It's not a 4g capable phone

every day. Multiple times, every day.

I swear there are people who would see that as an evil Apple conspiracy... that Apple should of, oh, invented a new word to name the phone so that people wouldn't get confused.
Imagine the audacity of using the number 4 in the iPhone's name! Even though it is, um, the 4th gen phone.

When word of this gets back to Foxconn, the world will shift off it's axis as the collective thud of the workers hit the ground simultaneously!

Just finish my 3 before you head up the stairs to the roof please :D
Suicide humor. Always a riot. Not.

It's not all bad standing in line chatting with people.
Sounds bad.

Of all mail carriers, I like FedEx the least. Wish Apple didn't have a partnership with them.
They were kind enough to "lose" my DVR last year, while claiming it was left on the steps. My wife was home, I was home part of the day. DirecTV was good about it, sent another out right away and filed a claim with FedEx. I never did hear what happened to it.

I ordered my iPhones this morning around 11:50AM CST and got the July 2nd shipping estimate. I must have gotten some of the very last few units in that section!

I just hope the date doesn't slip again. What next, "Ships by August 1st"?

Why might orders be so brisk?
  1. iPhone 4 perceived as faster 4G connection.
  2. People actually expect video conferencing to work before 2011.
  3. Fell in love with new design.
Don't get me wrong. It's a nice upgrade to pacify users until 4G is available but people are acting like this iPhone is the only fresh water after a natural disaster.

Not quite, lets see:
1.) Better position of the antenna should give better reception
2.) Noise cancelling mic good for the streets of NYC
3.) Better battery life
4.) Better screen (not that the old one was bad but...)
and did I mention beter battery life...?

they probably meant 2 phones for 2 phone numbers.

What I know is I pre-ordered a phone yesterday on the launch day. Then I went back to the apple.com website today and pre-ordered another i-phone 4 today and it said I was "upgrade" eligible on the same plan. So I will get two subsidized i-phone 4 phones one (1 account). Everytime you buy a new phone, you are restarting your contract. So I restarted my contract yesterday and then today I added one day to my contract.

I may order another i-phone later today and have three for one line and sell two. That way, I have more than paid for my penalty if I decide to cancel my At&t contract as soon as this phone gets on another carrier. I will then also be able to get whatever plan I want with the next carrier and save money on a better network. This is where the smart money is at...

I would be really concerned if I just had a reservation. I have a feeling there will be a lot of people unhappy on the 24th. As they have stated, reservation does not guarantee availability. That's why I pre-ordered. Make sure you are at the very front of that line on launch date :)

I'm assuming at this point that my order fell through the cracks... no email confirmation and nothing on 'order status', despite confirmation at the time of pre-order.
But the fact is that while it would have been fun to get on day 1, its hardly the end of the world. My 3GS is a great phone and I'd be picking it up while on the road anyway.
Actually, (as sour grapes as this may sound), I have a feeling that the lines are going to be horrendous, even for pre-orders. There is an activation process after all, and with so many being upgrades, premature or not, I hardly see it going flawlessly.
I would like to find out, however, whether I should even show up at the Ann Arbor store, because even finding out is likely to take a looooooong time in lines.
