after the £30 code, my staff discount and £17 of club card vouchers I got a 64gb wifi for £459. Very pleased. Click and collect on Monday. From past experience things do arrive before 4pm.

Doesn't the money automatically get refunded? Are we all going to have to go through this to get our money back?

Yes it should do, but it could be up to 7 days! I was trying to get currys to release the hold so the money would be back in my account, my bank told me what currys had to do, but currys were unwilling to do it.

Learnt my lesson, stick to apple.

Just to finish this off, Currys say 'they do not have the facility to fax' (i.e., they don't have a fax machine), so neither my bank or currys are able/willing to help, and I'm now out of pocket for up to 7 days.

I asked the Currys 'customer service' rep whether he thought this was acceptable (the initial mess, spending an hour on the phone to currys & the bank, and ultimately now being 265 pounds down for up to 7 days), and he said it was my own fault as I accepted the terms and conditions, so I have no right to complain!!

Wow, just...wow.

As much as I hate to say this (and really sorry that I have to)... I'm sorta with Currys on this one. They shouldn't put it quite that way but it was a blatant error in their system. Surely everyone that went for it was well aware that was the case, £265 for a £479 device on day of launch can be nothing other than a cock-up. That being the case the risk is high that a) the order will get cancelled and b) as it's likely to get cancelled because of a mistake you're operating outside of their normal process and things can go a bit odd.

Ultimately with these sorts of 'deals' that are clearly errors you know that by pursuing them you're trying to take advantage of the system. If it comes off, no problem but if it doesn't I wouldn't expect any company to go out of their way to help those who tried to do so.

Fit for purpose... look it up...

You should probably do a little research or see if your local trading standards do any sort of education classes on consumer protection law.

You seem quite confused with warranties and statutory protection which are completely separate issues.

The 2 year EU Directive was actually not fully implemented in the UK, mainly because the Sale of Goods Act has been offering a similar protection since 1979 and allowed you to take action for up to 6 years. These consumer protections are nothing to do with warranties.

Fit for purpose is a SoGA term, and is another separate issue, more to do with the purpose you buy an item for, not what you think it does, the part of SoGA you are thinking of is "durable quality", which is unfortunately subjective and would need to be proven in court to rely on it as a protection.

A warranty is in addition to any statutory rights, from Apple, it is 12 months, from John Lewis is it 24 months (the warranty is a contract issue between you and the retailer with who you formed a contract), Apple go beyond their legal requirements by offering their 12 month warranty no matter where you bought the item from.

Please don't post the "24 month EU warranty" myth again, it just confuses the entire issue and has no factual basis.

Has anyone else here ordered a pay and collect from Currys/PC World? Mine said it would be delivered to store tomorrow but now it says 3-5 working days from tomorrow in the order status.

My Currys £251 32gb wifi is now trackable via dpd and is scheduled to arrive Monday. I wonder how many got through, you'd think it would be easy to just cancel all white 32b orders :D

If you buy your iPad from say Tesco or Currys but have a problem with it, do you or can you go to Apple to fix or do you have to return to where you bought it?

I'm not asking for any special help, nor was I angry that it hadn't gone through. If you read back I said I accept that, no problem.

My issue is the way I'm still out of pocket to the tune of £265, and likely am to be for up to 7 days, and you side with currys on this?

In addition, there was zero communication from currys other than a 'it's not being delivered' email over 7 hours later.

To me, that is not the way to tidy up an error that they caused, regardless of it being obvious or not.

Do people think a smart case or a smart cover and back cover or sleeve is better?

I currently have a Smart Cover plus a back TPU cover and a sleeve for my iPad 3. I don't like the cases as they add too much bulk and defeat the purpose of having a thin and light device. The back TPU covers are pretty thin and light and the Smart Cover can easily be taken off when using the iPad if necessary.

The sleeve probably isn't as necessary and maybe overkill but I like the added protection especially when its in my bag. I've ordered a red Smart Cover and a TPU back cover. I'm going to see if I can still use the sleeve for my iPad 3 even though the iPad Air is thinner. The sleeve was quite expensive so I don't really want to have to replace it.

In the same situation at you, I ordered a blue Smart Cover for my Air and it says 7th delivery. Probably because it comes by standard postal delivery and the shipping estimates are different for courier shipping. Wouldn't be surprised if it turns up with my iPad anyway. We'll see. Just eager for my iPad to dispatch, although it says 5th delivery so I shouldn't really be worried about it anyway.

My iPad has finally been dispatched using Syncreon Parcel Delivery this evening at around 8:30PM. The Smart Cover was dispatched earlier today using Syncreon post. Hopefully you're right and they will both end up being delivered around the same time. That said I've just managed to order the screen protector from Amazon today of the 4th to the 8th. I'm not going to start using my iPad until the screen protector is on their so I may have to wait a few days more.

Edit: I just checked and the estimated delivery of my Smart Cover is the 6th.

Whats wrong with the smart case?

Its awful. It's not well designed and adds to much bulk and weight to the iPad. It's not worth it I'm my opinion.

Agreed picked up a black Smart Cover. I love how you can take it off and snap it back on as you wish.

Alternatives to protect the back? Would you recommend a back cover or a sleeve?

If you buy your iPad from say Tesco or Currys but have a problem with it, do you or can you go to Apple to fix or do you have to return to where you bought it?

I think this is a bit of a grey area and it all depends on what you mean by problem. In theory and in general terms during the first year Apple will honour the warranty where ever you bought it as they are the manufacturer of the product. It just so happens unlike other manufacturers Apple has its own retail stores with their own tech support and repair in the form of the Genius bars.

If its a manufacturing defect Apple may ask you to go back to the retailer you bought it from if it was someone other then themselves. In reality they are likely to resolve the issue themselves by typically just swapping it out but bear in mind they will give you a brown box unit and not an off the shelf retail box. I.e. Just the iPad itself and nothing else. The consensus seem to be mixed as to whether these are genuine brand new units or refurbs. The likely hood is that at launch they should be new units. Obviously if something goes wrong during the first year Apple will honour the warranty and replace the unit with a brown box one.

If you want a new retail replacement you would have to take it back to where you bought it from and hope they will agree to replace it.

Doesn't the money automatically get refunded? Are we all going to have to go through this to get our money back?

I'd prepare to wait 7-10 days to get your money back. That's what every bank will tell you. Currys will tell you they've cancelled the money hold and the money should be back but your bank will tell you it's an automated system and they've got no control over it (which is basically a lie). So yeah, prepare to be waiting a good week to get your money back and cleared into your account.

I would say a back cover as its always on the iPad. That way if its resting on a table or other hard surface the back won't get scratched. With a sleeve you're going to have to take the iPad out to use it. Granted you could rest the iPad on the sleeve when using it but they may not be practical.

Have you never experienced the joys of a Smart Cover until now? ;-)

Currys could still be holding the money but in my experience it's the bank holding it and they try to keep your money as long as possible. When I ordered my iPhone 5s the usual hold was put onto my account waiting for Apple to dispatch my order (when the hold turns into a debit). Well, dispatch comes round and Barclays keeps the original hold on and gives Apple a SEPARATE £549. I'm now over £1000 down on my account for 1 iPhone. I call Apple and they say it shouldn't have happened but they are no longer holding the money for the original hold and it should be back. Called Barclays and they basically told me a load of scripted rubbish that it was out of their control and the money would return in 7-10 days (they definitely have the power to return your money there and then but they just won't). Got sorted in the end, but even dealing with Apple can still get your screwed over by your bank.

My tescos order which I placed at 2pm finally has changed from "partially confirmed" to "dispatched".....and still says 4pm store pickup Saturday 2nd.....yay :)

I have to agree with smiddlehurst on this. At the end of the day you and others took a chance by taking advantage of what was clearly a mistake and you knew it was likely a mistake or error on Currys part. Such offers are typically too good to be true. There was no guarantee you would succeed with your order and you didn't so you have to pay the consequences. By law any offer to sell a product at a certain price is an invitation to treat and the retailer is under no obligation to honour such errors.

In some circumstances as a gesture of goodwill they will but usually when the price different is much smaller. Judging by previous similar circumstances I have seen with online orders the way Currys handled it is no different from other companies in the same situation. I'm not saying its right or defending them but this is to be expected. Rather then moaning and complaining you need to just accept it and move on.

I've had a 2 since it was released and currently use a cheap TPU back cover. Tried a cover followed by a case and discarded them both for various reasons.

Picked up an Air this afternoon at my local Apple store and liked the Red case so much I got one aswell. Early days yet but that Air feels like a step up from my 2. Not hugely so which is surprising. I think the 2 is still a top iPad and I would recommend it to anyone.

My Tesco order also changed to dispatched.

My Currys £251 order also was confirmed on the phone and email to be on the way to the store. Wonder how true that is. I would be surprised if they honour the 32GB version for that price.

Does your emails delivery date say 04/11/2013 but in the delivery details section in your account say "Saturday 2nd November"?
