So - my 3 year old 64GB iPad 1 was coming to end of it's useful life with me. Quite a lot of my apps are now iOS6+ and i was becoming disheartened at the speed of operations on it sometime, so after the last keynote i decided my heart was set on 128GB iPad Mini with Retina. Despite having Celluar on my iPad 1, i've only used it like twice over the past 3 years, so wifi only this time round.
Went to bed Monday night, still of the opinion Mini Retina would be released on or around 22nd November.
Had car into work yesterday, rather than the usual train - so never got to touch base on the latest IT headlines. Got into work at 7.55am and saw a email from a colleague with a web link saying apple on-line store was offline amongst rumour of an immediate surprise iPad mini launch...
Ohh excitement.
Sure enough at the back of 8, the store came up allowing order of iPad Mini Retina's. Brilliant. Ahhh, 128GB ones were 5-10 days delivery. Argggh. I want one now!
Ok, call Apple Store in Buchanan St, Glasgow at 9am. Still closed. Get through 9.05am asking with much excitement if Retina Mini's would be in stock today. Yes he says, although stocks will be extremely limited and will be through a reservation system - he advises me to check and keep an eye on the website. I thank him and put the phone down.
Goto website - find reservation page. Can't. Speak to sales support via the Instant Messenger. They apologise and tell me i was told incorrect information. They wouldn't be doing reservations on-line. Arrggghhh. Pants.
So i go ahead and order a 128GB on-line for 5-10 day delivery. Least it's ordered.....
An hour later, check website again out of curiosity. Find the reservation page hiding under the retail pages. Woo Hoo.! Nothing, select store, can't do anything. Argghh. Give it time.
An hour later, still nothing. Get colleague to call Buchanan Street. Advised no deliveries yet hence why page is not live. Fair enough. It's only 11am.
For the next 3 hours, check page. Nothing. Check page. Nothing. Repeat many many many times.
2pm, call Buchanan St store. Very helpful chap advises the page will be live at 3pm. ok...
3.01pm - Page live. Woo hoo. Ahh pants. Only 16GB, 32GB and 64GB available. 128GB unavailable. I was kind of expecting this - i imagine Apple would be concentrating on the cheaper pads as they would no doubt be more popular.
Reside in fact i have a 128GB ordered for 5-10day delivery. Oh well.
Hold on. Brainwave. Let's check Glasgow Braehead. All non-cellular in stock, *including* 128GB. Dancer. Reserve one straight away. interestingly, 128GB now unavailable, but i have a confirmation via email.
3.30pm by this time. Pickup slot is 4pm - 5pm. Store is Braehead. I'm in work in Glasgow City Centre.
Luckily, i have the car in today. A few hours in lieu owed. So a quick jump out to Braehead.
Goto to store, and walked out with a 128GB Mini Retina by 4.30pm - pleased as punch. Online order cancelled.
The Apple guy dealing with the sale made a few points during my chat with him.
- Apple Stores will not entertain walk in sales. All mini retina sales at the moment must be reserved.
- You must pick your reserved ipad mini up during your allocated time. If you don't, you lose it as it's put back to stock. no if's, no but's, no maybe's. Even if you are five minutes late, forget it.
- Stocks are extremely limited and they don't know if and when they are getting more stock in.
- The 128GB i reserved was the only one received by the store.
So there you go. Waking up in morning not expecting a Retina mini to be in my hand by the end of the day.
And what a device. Blows iPad 1 out the water. I'm way more than happy with it. Best iPad ever.
Even better as i had it in my hand as some parts of America were waking up to the news
I'm happy!
