I asked a friend who works high up in UPS. It means they can't allow the customer to collect the package before a delivery attempt, leave it with a neighbour, or change the delivery address.

Getting impatient now - it’s been less then 15 miles away since Saturday, and I'm not going to get it until Thursday by the looks of things...

And by the way, others earlier in the thread were tracking their packages in Feltham - that just means Heathrow.

Thanks for that - very useful information. And now thanks to the magic of the internet anyone else Googling for it on future product releases will now know :)

I remember when my first MBP (2009 Core 2 Duo 13") was being shipping to me by UPS I called them and asked if I could come collect it instead of delivering it. They said yes :)

I suppose it's just in the hands of customs to get around to processing the cage/store that has our items in. Fingers crossed that they will go to the courier overnight tonight and be out for delivery tomorrow...

...I can but hope...

Mike

This is the same as mine, guess they were on the flight together....

LOL!

8GB will be enough for anybody :)

And seriously - it almost certainly will be more than enough for almost all the tasks you're going to want to do with it. I went for 16GB only because I run virtual machines and want to allocate 4-8GB each, so OSX gets 8GB and either one VM running Windows 7 with 8GB or two with 4GB each.

But I haven't seen many 512GB SSDs paired with 8GB of RAM, most of the folks going for the high end RMBP have gone for 16GB of RAM IMO.

Mike

Yeah but I suspect I will call upon at least one vm in the future. So tempting when I have an unopened box though!

Oh and the only reason I didn't get the 16GB at order time was because I didn't realise you couldn't upgrade later. I ordered as soon as the store came on line. Doh!

So 8GB?

Roughly how long do Apple wait between refreshes like this one between?

Do they do little updates during this period?

Then you'll probably be perfectly fine as I am at the moment - Macbook Pro 2010 Core i5, 256GB SSD, 8GB of RAM and I'm almost always running a single VM with 4GB of RAM allocated to it.

I'm mostly stoked about USB 3.0 on the Mac, if I'm honest! Finally!

All the best,

Mike
EDIT: If you don't mind waiting, you could sell yours unopened on eBay for a small profit and pick up a RMBP next month...

Intel release a new chip every year and Apple for the past few years have kept pace with Intel...

Thanks Mike. Well I need to decide soon as a return is being scheduled

My most recent status update reports:-

Castle Donnington, United Kingdom 06/18/2012 1:42 A.M. Arrival Scan

Delivery by end of day 19/6 apparently.

You're welcome.

If it helps - I'd swap my incoming 2.3Ghz 16GB RAM 256GB SSD for yours, but I wouldn't want to pay any extra for it.

However for "only" £160, the 16GB upgrade option does make sense, on all of the available models.

To go from 256GB to 512GB, all things considered (i.e. a faster CPU) costs £500 inc VAT, which makes the 16GB RAM upgrade look like an absolute bargain!

All the best,

Mike

The expo thing will no longer give us info - it's now with apple. Their own shipment status checker has changed to 'Preparing handover to final carrier'

Yeah thats what it says on my apple tracker do you know what to expect from here

I managed to pass by very quickly to the Regent Street Apple store today and tried the Retina Macbook Pro. I had to wait a bit for someone to leave so I can try it. Many people were waiting too. I have to say you will notice that it is thin (thinner than the old one) the moment you see it. The screen is amazing!!! Super crisp. I am used to the iPhone and the iPad retina screen so it wasn't a shocking experience but it was a very good first impression. The laptop i tried was the base configuration (2.3 GHz, 8 GB ram) and I thought it was very fast. I didn't notice any lag in the graphics and it opened up applications in milliseconds. iTunes, iPhoto, Aperture, mail, safari, etc were open together and it was super fast. I even restarted the computer twice and it was very fast in restart. I was really very impressed. It is not as heavy as the older MBP but I don't think it is very light. Overall, I am very impressed and looking forward for my ordered rMBP (won't arrive before 3 - 4 weeks :(). To be honest, i only wanted to try it because I was worried about the lag issues i read about on this forum, but the computer I tried had no issues whatsoever.
By the way I looked for the Zebra wallpaper but couldn't find it hahaha. I searched for it in Aperture and iPhoto but no sign. There was other nice photos there but not the famous Zebra one!

Even I tried the retina base model at Westfield Stratford city apple store and there was no lag. Scrolling was really smooth.. Pages with graphics and pictures were smooth as well. Can't wait for mine to arrive...

shipping buddies high-5 :)

I'm slightly ashamed to admit that I tracked the plane coming in all the way from Sweden!

The 'estimated delivery date' has changed, for me, from the 21st to the 19th! Here's to hoping it arrives before Monday!

Which courier did yours arrive with?

ups :)

So has anybody found a store with any stock? I ordered the 2.6, 16GB RAM, 768GB SSD model so am stuck waiting until 11th - 17th July! If a shop had the Ultimate spec I would be tempted to purchase it, but my local stores Reading and Basingstoke tell me they have got none. Interestingly they have the Ultimate as a available in store configuration (its on the iPad display thingy).

On the expo site? Yea I see that too in the first tab, but the 2nd tab has "requested delivery date 21st" still. Hopefully the 19th is correct and apple will accept delivery and not turn them away sayin "we're too busy, come back on the 21st" :/

EDIT:
Mojo, did you order any accessories? I ordered a dvi adapter and dvd drive - hoping that this wont delay the order!

My status has changed to In Transit to Customer - Shipment on Schedule but hasn't given me any additional tracking info. Apart from UPS who do apple use for delivery?

They have the same info at my local store. Its actually sad seeing the Apple staff talk the new retina up, doing a huge selling pitch and when the customer is hooked, they say they have no stock. The Apple sales guy wasted 1/2 of a lady's time making the pitch and then when she was interested, dropped the bombshell.

I'm going to wait a while to see if they get the top spec model instore.
