I ordered shortly after the store came back online after the wwdc

The annoying thing was I was verifying my credit card number in iTunes account as the thing was being announced so I could buy it as soon as the store opened. I knew this would happen

And in my usual stupidity I dithered by reading peoples opinions on the net and when it came time to buy it said 3 weeks.

Now I have to try find one instore as I really need it for a big job next week!

Apple Store Regent Street had SEVEN RMBP's and obviously sold out instantly. Apparently are getting "more tomorrow".

This is RIDICULOUS. It's a ploy by marketing to raise some hype. Seriously Apple get a grip! Stop being losers and supply us properly.

Yep, I was there and one of the lucky ones to walk away with one of the base models.

They only had 1 of the top models in stock and none of the staff there had even seen it.

Anyway, I've taken it back to the office now and had a chance to set it up and have some first hand experience using it.

The design and looks needs no introduction, it's just simply stunning. The display is pin sharp and everything just pops out at you and you can really hear the sound improvements.

However, there is a few things I would like to point out for those thinking of getting one.

Due to the retina display, non native apps such as Chrome, Firefox, even numbers will look very pixliated. It's because everything is upscaled. And looks really horrible. It makes some apps annoying to use because of the poor upscaling. Definitely check it out before taking out your wallets.

Congrats on managing to buy one, really jealous now :D And thanks for sharing your first impressions.

Would you mind posting up a few pics of that sexy beast if you have time? I'm sick of viewing stock photos from Apple and the odd pics from review sites. Would appreciate it.

Thanks

Further to this could you post some screenshots showing the various scaled resolutions both with and without native app support (chrome & safari) as it will be interesting to see the results.

I'm just publishing a vid on Youtube of the Apple staff drooling over the Macbook. Here's the link:

Good to see staff so passionate about the products they sell.

Will find a way to upload pics as well.

gonna hit the top end 13" :D gonna get something more supreme, ie retina display etc in a few years I'm thinking, just too expensive for me!

The one on the left looks rather blurry ;)

Is that scaled using 1920x1200 as an example or just the native retina display showing chrome and safari?

It looks very blurry in real life. Imagine using zoom function on your mac to view a webpage and its that kind of effect.

Everything is on default settings. You can increase the page resolution but that's basically making the text smaller.

It's pretty bad once you start using other non apple apps, hope there will be updates to fix.

Does it remain sharp when scaling to 1920x1200 or does it look kind of crappy like the non-native retina applications?

It sounds like unless all apps are updated it's going to look a lot worse than a stock 1440x900 macbook pro.

If anyone is buying the new macbook pro in England or any mac for that matter here is the link for the St Andrews university education store:

Erm don't you have to be a student in order to order one if they ask for proof of student ID or other credentials.

Oh the irony - of all the unis you choose for your 'in England', you pick one in Scotland :)

Anyway, I don't think that would work as don't you need to be accessing from a uni lan?

The standard UK edu store doesn't check, btw.

Even when scaled to 1920, you can still see a big difference between the two.

Its still pretty crappy but part of the reason is because software with native retina support just looks so amazing next to it.

Best comparison to get an idea is the difference between the native retina apps vs non native is comparing the display on iPhone 4's vs iPhone 3's

Nope, give it a try. You put in the checkout and it gives you your £70 student gift card and asks which way you want to pay. Anyway, when i bought my iMac a couple years ago with my sisters student i.d over the phone i just phoned them up and asked what I wanted and they didn't even ask for the i.d, they just made the order and asked me to send me my 'student email' which i never did and still got my iMac in the post lol :p

I've ordered quite a few times from the Higher Education store and I've never been asked for ID. Don't know anyone else who has either.

But then I am a student so I do it with a guilt-free conscience :p

haha England, United Kingdom, same thing! :p give it a try, it goes straight to the website, no need for being on the uni's LAN.

Being a business customer I wonder if i'd get more idea of availability at the Liverpool store( which is my preferred choice even though i don't live anywhere near?? :) ).... Will keep you posted....... :D

just walked into the Liverpool store and was told it'd be in store tomorrow

Just off the phone with the Buchanan Street store in Glasgow, they're now saying "In the next few days". I'm fairly sure all those stores saying they'll be in tomorrow are just guessing - the guy I just spoke to basically said the staff in store are all in the dark as to when new stock will be in. They don't know what they're getting til they unpack the boxes was the impression I got.

Thank you very much for the uploads, much appreciated for the time spent on it. The video and pics have made me want the new retina MBP even more lol, it looks so sexy. I think I might sell my current 15" MBP and buy the retina.

Has anyone spoken to the Trafford Centre store to see when they're getting the retina in? I'm not going till Friday, I figure they'll have some by then, even if it's just on display so I can take a look at one and I can order online at a later date.
