Has anyone used both the 13 inch and 15 inch MBPs? Reason I ask is I need a new laptop as I have given my 13 inch MBP to a family member but was hoping that the new spec 13 inchers would have a better screen, which is the only thing I didn't like much about it. Is the 15 inch a major step down in portability?

I can get the new base retina machine for £1394 as I get a union discount and VAT back, but don't want to get it if I'll be cursing its bulk. I don't fancy the 13 inch Air as powerful enough and by the time it's configured with 8GB ram it's pretty pricey anyway.

I was also hoping for a new spec Mac Mini as my current Mini is a 2009 model - I guess the other question is what is the easiest way to use a laptop such as the new 15 inch retina as a desktop replacement - I run two LCDs with DVI connectors and three or four external USB or Firewire drives. Is there a dock system that would suit?

Dilemma

Really wanted one but not sure if i can justify buying the retina MBP.

I can buy a 27inch iMac and Base MBA 11inch with the money.

Not in the market for one alas, just wanted to play around with one so won't be there tomorrow. Been waiting on iMacs personally. But every cloud has a silver lining, going to the Liverpool store I saw new sales person who is worth going back for!! Hot hot hot! New girl front of store, very scouse.

Oh it was going so well til the last part!! Haha.

I was waiting for the iMac myself, but with the possible 2013 rumours floating round, I'm done waiting. MBP + Thunderbolt display are on my horizon.

Would you mind posting up a few pics of that sexy beast if you have time? I'm sick of viewing stock photos from Apple and the odd pics from review sites. Would appreciate it.

Thanks

Here's some pics:

I was expecting the box to be much thinner than that. I mean, that looks thicker than the current MBP box! A much nicer design, however.

As this is sort of a first generation product, I've started thinking that maybe it would be worth taking AppleCare. My original plan was to buy the MBP in an Apple Store and get AppleCare with the 70%+ student discount they offer in store, but I've just been told by a guy at the Braehead store that the discount has been reduced to only 30%

Looks like I'm going to have to buy it online through the HE store and get the free AppleCare with it. It'll be worth the wait.

Worry not about the box,,, that will be soon forgotten.

I was quite glad the box looks familiar when carrying it home on the tube. Didn't want to draw too much attention.

The lack of familiar ports is giving the new macbook another headache. Got to buy adaptors for charger, display etc.

Haven't been able to port over data because doesn't have firewire as per my 2 yr old MBP.

Students get free AppleCare if buying online?!?!

Went to Liverpool Apple tonight with the hope of seeing one... Wasn't there! :(

um, I'd remove that link if I were you... Things like this could make the discount more strictly governed... Not fair to those actual students who pay thousands for their tuition too.

Just saying!

I'm pretty sure Apple doesn't care about a few people that aren't students... If they cared that much there would be much stricter rules for controlling it.

I'm sure they don't but they care about equality and non-students don't deserve 15% saving if they haven't forked out thousands to 'become' a student. Do you think it's fair on yourself that you allow others to take advantage of the system, when they haven't paid tuition? (in which case the Scottish wouldn't care anyway)

Yes or via telesales. I spoke to apple online and they confirmed that if you buy through higher education, online or on the phone, you get 3 years hardware warranty included. You don't however receive a printed document that states this... Like you would if you bought applecare.

That's quite a considerable amount of discount for being a student. I take it you don't have to register anything to get the discount?

You can pretty much get the highly specced retina for the base price. I would use it if I could afford one. Maybe in a month or so. it will be going on the credit card that's for sure lol

Yep, when you take the discount plus the free AppleCare into account it really is a pretty sweet deal. It's not like regular AppleCare, hell I don't think they even actually call it AppleCare, but about a month after you receive your new computer you get an email with the details of your extended hardware warranty, and it's all present on Apple systems just like AppleCare would be so it's no hassle if you take it into the Genius Bar past the first year.

I seem to remember this being one of the conditions of Apple winning a contract to supply UK universities with computers - the winning company had to provide all students and staff with 3 year warranties. Pretty good deal.

Woah, you made it sound like you just pulled £3,000 out of your back pocket. :D

Wish I had money like that to spend. What do you do for a living? :)

Anyone have news of the Apple store in Stratford (Westfield), London?

:D

It actually works out cheaper for me. When I buy something I like to buy the "best possible" so that it lasts longer before I feel the need to change it.

In 2008 I bought a maxed out spec unibody when it came out, and I only now feel the need to change it.

I'm banking on me not feeling the need to change this thing until the next revolutionary Macbook Pro DESIGN refresh at the earliest, which means this maxed out Macbook Pro with Retina Display will probably work out at around £800 per year.

Alternatively I can buy a cheaper model today, and then I'll get penis envy in about 1-2 years and end up buying a new laptop every 1-2 years, which means I'll be spending more than £3000 every 4 years as I'm planning.

I do the same with most technology. I play the long game. Spend on the best possible today, which puts off penis envy for longer so I am only spending every few years :)

Did they have them in Braehead? I phoned them earlier, guy sounded pretty pissed that I'd dared to even ask about it. Whoever it was, they certainly weren't much of an ambassador for Apple's customer services. Proper arse.

It really is a great deal. Another good argument when people say "but I can get a comparable SPEC computer for £400 cheaper"...

Hi guys,

So I've been doing a bit of research on how to get the retina MacBook Pro for the lowest amount of money possible (Basically, trying to milk as much discount out as I can). So far, I have managed to get the 2.3 GHz base model for £1,467.04. A saving of £331.96

Alternatively, for the 2.6 GHz, the price will work out at £1,874.67, saving: £423.33.

Took a bit of work but I thought I'd share it with you guys (and girls).

Basically, you *must* be a student to get it at this price.

Here's how it works:

1. Access the Apple store from your uni network to gain access to the Education Store pricing which is:

  • £1,528.80 for the 2.3 GHz; or
  • £1,953.60 for the 2.6 GHz model

2. Sweeten that deal further by going through a cash back website such as Quidco or TopCashBack. I will use TopCashBack for this example who are currently offering 4.04% for Education Store purchases. This means that the effective price will be:

  • £1,467.04 for the 2.3 GHz model - Saving: £331.96 off the RRP; or
  • £1,874.67 for the 2.6 GHz model - Saving: £423.33 off the RRP

Please note that cash back is not guaranteed and the 4.04% offer ends in 6 days.

To add the cherry on top, Apple are offering a £70 Gift Card to spend on apps, books and movies as part of their Back To School promo.

So, in all, it's not a bad deal for us students.

For Non-students, you can still use the cash back sites to get cash back from the RRP, but obviously the savings won't be as much as those gained by students.

Hope this helps out anyone hoping to make a purchase.

Also, I've been talking to en eBay seller, and he is due to let me know in the next few weeks whether he can offer an even cheaper deal, so I'll be waiting for his response soon. But for those who wish to order now, this is a great saving.

I tend to do the same, I bought a unibody back in december 2008 and its still my main laptop. Its starting to show its age now though and getting slower. I guess its time to upgrade but it lasted a long time. A hell of a lot longer if I was to buy a PC.

I'm thinking maybe sell it on ebay?

Tomorrow..

I was in Bluewater, Kent patiently waiting to pick up the retina MBP and low and behold "come back tomorrow".

They didn't have the update 13 & 15 inch legacy's out until an apparent 2pm.

Back in tomorrow morning!!

1hr drive for me as I'm a coastal man. (quite a drive for us in the UK) :D

Brilliant! And quidco have 3% cash back but I can't seem to find if/when it ends... probably an ongoing reward as I remember seeing it last year...

Retina MBP for under £1,500 is fantastic.

Sorry, can somebody explain the process of these cash back sites?

Anybody else confirm their legit, sorry for being paranoid I've just /never/ heard of them lol.

I use quidco. It is legit, just very slow.

For instance, when I use a NCP car park with a debit card associated with my quidco account (you just enter card details), quidco tracks the purchase of car park tickets and eventually gives my 5% back (I think).

Then, every so often, again I can't remember when, quidco transfers the cash back to either paypal or your bank account. (paypal charges though)

It is very good and very, very legit and secure but it's not that fast.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that it works online via a link, as the poster below has just commented.

You click through their link to your chosen merchant. They earn commission for this and pay you a percentage of this. It's never guaranteed but has worked 100% for me over the years (quidco for the last 5 years ish). Quidco and Topcashback are totally legit.

For example last year I got £180 cashback for my iPhone 4 contract with Three. Also got £120 for joining sky (plus £100 M&S vouchers). Even things like games, movies etc, few pence here and there adds up.
