I have to have a little laugh at the number of students buying the MBPR - it's a surprising number considering how hard it must be (financially) to be a student these days. I'm reminded of my (Comp Sci) degree (91-95) and out of a graduating class of maybe 40 people, perhaps 3 or 4 had laptops. Everyone else relied on the labs.

Anyway, I digress. Just glad that Apple's still around as when I was a student they were on the brink of going out of business, and if you'd told me then that they'd be This Big and This Successful in 2012, I'd never have believed you :)

This is very true. I also work quite a lot both in study time and after I have finished. I'm a very good saver and don't really buy 'typical' student stuff. (alcohol!)

There's no way I'd pay the full price though, so paying £3.5K a year does have its benefits :)

you should have bought some stocks back then, you would have been a millionaire now!! :p:D

My order's still processing with a delivery date of 22-26th June.

Lucky to have even got that far after my useless credit card company declined the transaction on account of "fraud prevention measures". After many phone calls between me, them and Apple it appears the payment finally went through yesterday (I placed the order as soon as the store opened on Monday). Credit card company explained that they often automatically decline large transactions with Apple as these are risky because they're "highly desirable items". Yes I know they're highly desirable - I highly desire one which is why I'm trying to bloody order one!! Still all good now...

I've gone for 2.6Ghz, 16GB, 512GB flash plus the essential (for me) ethernet adapter. Wish I'd though to order a MagSafe converter too so I can use my old power supplies, but I'll have to get hold of one later as I'm not risking amending my order after the problems I've had! :D

Don't get me started ... after having been stung by this a couple of times, the last time I made a big order with Apple I called my credit card company to say that a large amount would be coming off my card and I wanted to pre-authorise it so it wasn't delayed by any security checks. Guess what? "the system doesn't work that way, so we can't do that." Grrrr

Was hoping for an iMac refresh, but cant wait any longer as I have been waiting for this refresh for a while now! Ended up going for the 2.7Ghz i7 with 16GB RAM Retina Macbook Pro. Higher Education discount and £70 Voucher from :apple: lessened the pain of the transaction somewhat, but I cant wait to get it!

Ordered on the 12th and have 2-3 shipping estimate. Cant wait to get my hands on it...but will have to!

1) Does anyone on here have experience with ordering newly launched products? Ie, the iPad 3, which was also very scarce at launch?

What Im trying to work out is this - is it likely that retail will have decent stock before 3-4 weeks? Or should I plump for an online order?

2) If I order online and then subsequently manage to get one in store, am I able to cancel the original online order?

1) I think this time, even the stores had good stock of the iPad 3. You might not be able to find the whole range but they had some stock.

2) You will be able to cancel your order as long as it is not shipped (or prepared for shipment - I am not sure). I have done it many times when I order online, buy in store and cancel the online order. But worst case scenario you can return it back and they will refund you.

If I was in your position now, I will order one online and see how it goes with the stock availability in store. I want to do so too, but I forgot whether Apple takes the money immediately or they just hold it for few days and then release it. If they just hold it, then I will be able to order it, as I need the money before the end of June. Then my account will have enough money in July when it is about to ship... Any idea?

Thanks for the help jeopardy! Will order it tonight... very annoyed that I didn't do this when it first became available! Suppose now I know for next time..

Yeah I know it sucks.. I also want to try and sell my current macbook pro before I buy the new one.. helps a bit paying for the new one...

Just spoke to Trafford Centre store, apparently they don't even have the RMBP out on display yet and it'll be over a week until they do. I mean seriously?! They can't even get a display model out after 3 days?! Are all the stores like this? Or did the person on the phone just not have a clue?

I don't even want to buy it in store, I'll purchase online, but this is silly.

KRCS in Nottingham don't seem to know when they are going to have any in either, they are the only reseller we have bar Pc World or John Lewis, who seemed equally in the dark, KRCS claim they are getting priority but still told me 2-3 weeks. So much for taking it on holiday :D

I see they also changes the 'REturn' key on the retina MBP. Unless the 15" has always have the long return key, versus the 17" which I currently use.

I spoke to the Arndale as well and they said they have one out on display so I think I'll take a trip there after Trafford Centre since it's not that far.

John Lewis in Leicester told me they had stock on Tuesday but weren't allowed to sell them until Friday.

That looks like the US Keyboard layout (they have the various keys spelled out, eg. 'Shift', 'Command' etc) whereas British layout uses the various symbols as well as a differently shaped return key.

Bought mine when it said 5 - 7 dispatch and it now says preparing for shipment :D:D

very excited

Anyone had any online order updates?

I ordered a maxed out 15" MacBook Pro with Retina Display 2.7Ghz i7, 16GB Ram, and 768GB Flash Drive on Monday 11 June 2012, and my order is still stuck at "processing" with a delivery estimate of 3-4 weeks 9-13 July 2012.

Anyone else having better luck?

It will stay at processing until maybe a day or two before it gets dispatched

The best things come to those who wait, apparently...

Although if I hadn't been so indecisive I could have bought one and probably had it by now. Such is life.

Meantime, I'm going to try to get by with Mac Mini and iPad 3. Wish me luck!

Goodluck!

yeah you are suffering from the same indecision as I am. I followed live coverage of the keynote. As it was announced I updated my card details in the Apple ID so I could buy it as soon as it was on the Apple Store. Instead I was so excited by it reading all the comments etc that I left it too late. Right Roal Idiot. I even knew it would have happened like that!

It seems they are very short on stock. I've had someone queuing outside Covent Garden for the last 2 days, at opening time, and there has been nothing. In the old days they'd say "available in X weeks". Now they said "available now", but it means pretty much the same - it'll still be weeks until there is anything like sufficient stock.

Nope they don't I went today. I was in the exact same position of you, wanted to check whether retina was truly worth the extra money and just how light it felt. Arrogant as hell manager in the Trafford Centre store as, I travelled to the Trafford Centre, they had their display Macbook Retina in the window but not on the floor (how stupid..) and asked her to call up the Arndale to avoid me another journey to check if the MBPR was on display there;
first thing she says to me is "Oh no if we don't have it on the floor they won't have". Still I insist her call considering thats pretty much her job to provide a customer service. Finally she buckles in and calls "Hi, I already know what the answer will be but do you have the MBPR on display in your store?". Bet she felt like a right tit when they told her they did after she tried to claim they wouldn't to not bother calling..

The Manchester Arndale one do though, so head there. It truly is beautiful, both aesthetics and that bloody retina display. Ordering mine tomorrow morning after a trip to the bank.
