UK O2 Customers! Just wait, we may be offerred early upgrade

I was excited about the tethering until i read you need to bolt on for that but then at least if you want you can do it month to month rather than taking out one of those laptop contracts.

It will be useful as last month i went away for a couple of days to a hotel who had free wifi but only in their main bar area. It would be have been useful to have that iphone tethering thing up & running. Its good to know for the future tho, i wouldnt want to pay for mobile broadband & be locked into a longterm contract, not when the iphone can do most of that for me.

15 quid to tether?! wtf! idea of tetherin is for those odd occasions when u cant get wifi.. shud b a free 1gb allowance a month with your contract then charge peopl who use it all time.. guess we stil jailbreakin..

I have just arranged for my pac code so that im ready for the change over. Have been told that the bill will come 14 days after change over & can pay by credit card if i wish to.

Im gonna go for the 45 a month 16gb, i was maybe going for the 32gb but im not sure i really need it.

The website has changed?

I've just been back on the o2 website and they seem to have taken all the 3GS prices down? And replaced with the old 3G only page? Is my cache playing tricks with me or are they updating this?

It's pretty clear: there will be no low-cost/in-contract upgrades. I wish this wasn't the case (I started my 18 month contract in August last year) but that's the way it is...

Nope, it's all still there as far as I can see.

When i was on arranging the pac code the girl was telling me about pay as you go mobile broadband, sounded good to me so i checked it out & looked at the coverage, not good for my postcode & several other areas nearby, also would have been rubbish for the hotel i was at recently. So im wondering how useful the tethering to the iphone would actually be?

So if they do not allow you to upgrade early most of us will not be allowed to upgrade to December. In which case if history proves anything we will only have to wait 6 months for iPhone 4g (or whatever it's going to be called) I would bet that most are just going to wait for the new one. O2 have just killed the sales of the 3g s.

Thinking about it surley to maximize sales the iPhone should only be sold on a 12 month contract to match the upgrade cycle otherwise iphone sales are going to be crippled everytime.

O2 aren't really interested in selling phones to existing customers. They are interested in acquiring and retaining subscribers. With the iPhone, very few of us will drop out in December, and most of us will renew our contracts when the next iPhone comes out in June/July 2010. This plan actually works very well for them even if it does not make for such good business in the UK for Apple.

This is not good business for O2. When they sell an iPhone most of the money goes to Apple, not O2. If they tie you to an 18 month contract then O2 get more of your money.

What i dont understand is why we cant pre order yet here in the UK? The US can, with problems, but the option IS there!

Just spoke to an apple expert who said that you will be able to pre order it from there site but they dont have a date yet of when that will be available.

Also cannot confirm prices

It might be...if I was a mod, smart arse. :p
:D Probably, since most people seem to completely fail to understand how mobile contracts have worked, do work, and probably will remain to work.

Actually Orange and T-mobile have always permitted me to upgrade after 12 months on an 18 month contract, providing you take out an extended contract and pay for a mobile if it's a bit more expensive than your plan.

This has always been the networks have worked with me for many years. O2 have really made a big mess, not anticipating the reaction from customers is unforgivable.

I can only see them having really poor sales in comparison to last year.

Nail on the head.
The focus will be to entice with the goodies next year.

As can be seen by this 3Gs specs it is a stop-gap offering…
Even the name gives it away.

Pre-orders are opening tomorrow on the Carphone Warehouse website, we've had a press release about it.

I'd assume Apple/O2 won't be far behind that...

I assume you mean behind as in the press release, i dont imagine carphone warehouse are gonna be the FIRST to allow pre orders!

Knowing what a bunch of jokers O2 are, I wouldn't be at all surprised!

Time and time again when the rest of the world can see what's coming, O2 are reactive rather than being proactive. Useless.

Good point. You have to admit tho that Apple WERE on the ball last night(UK TIME) as almost as soon as the keynote ended the online stores were back up!

Really well done i think

well ive just called o2, to downgrade my contract from £45 to £35, and they must be busy because i had to wait in a queue which has never happened to me in the 4 years of being with them on pay monthly or the 5 years previous on PAYG, so they must be getting an ear bashing. :D
