Ultimate Sizing Guide for Watch By An Actual Stylist.

Posting some pics in case it helps anyone else on the fence.

So - according to the "credit card guide" I am a 'B' with a very slight wrist overhang (my wrist is just slightly larger than the CC but not to where it would be a 'C').

This is my 42mm Sport. Before it arrived I did go to the Apple store to check sizes and immediately both the sales lady and I thought the 38mm looked just a tad small. When my 42mm arrived my wife also though it looked like a perfect fit (and she would not be shy to say otherwise).

Anyway - I think it looks like the right thing for my wrist. And I am wary of having it look like a gadgety or like a tech toy. The 38mm just made my wrist look bulky when it was on.

What is your wrist circumference? The 42 looks small on your wrist, you must be 180+mm.

Very helpful post, surprised MacRumours didn't use this on the main page!

I was in section A - but was always going to go with 38mm anyway.

I am surprised how Apple haven't provided more real life galleries of the :apple: Watch in use, it would really help to see what band works in a fashion sense.

38 mm SS Milenanse Loop has my vote!

the ss milanese is actually the 42mm!

Thanks for your post! did you measure the credit card only on the top of your wrist or did you take into account the bottom?

I only measured the CC on the top of my wrist. I did not take a pic because you just cannot tell the comparison unless you are looking from all angles first hand.

The 42mm is perfect for you, fits very nice!

Thank you!

Yeah - that is so interesting because I honestly always felt that I had smaller than average wrists for my size (6ft, 210lbs). I know my hands and feet are just a bit smaller than average for my height. And while MacRumors does not necessarily represent the greater population, if I were to gauge my wrist size compared to most of the men who have posted pics throughout these threads I'd say my wrist was way bigger than average.

I have not measured my wrist circ. Don't have anything to use at the house to do so.

Well, i ordered a 38mm ss Milanese confident of the size based on several of my round watches at that size. On a whim, I went down to the store just to confirm my choice of size in person. Much to my surprise, the 38mm looked too small on my wrist (6.5" circumference, category B on the credit card guide).

So, back home to cancel that order and ordered the 42mm - there was no question in my mind after trying the 38mm on. The rectangular shape makes a difference.

I ordered the 42mm watch regardless of this guide, in the last years I've been wearing a 43mm watch (which is probably 50mm tall) and it didn't look bad at all, and the apple watch is only 42mm tall.

I get the point of this guide and why it matters for people that really care about the looks but this is also the most useful watch I have ever bought and I will probably enjoy the extra screen space and what not.

This is cool though I did go into the store before reading this.

Gone with the 42 though I thought I would of been a 38. Just felt more comfortable. Also I want to do that obnoxious 'yes it is an apple watch' :)

Still indecisive, but opting for 38mm at the moment. I already asked in here, but now I also have images with the 42mm watch

38mm does look much better, that being said I don't think photographs are the best way of testing heh. Base it on how you feel using it, if you don't swing one way or the other, the 38mm will save you money ;)

Too small? I got the 38 but wife says it looks like lady's watch on me. I put in order for 42 but I don't know now. 42 will take a long time to ship. The one thing that I find important is that the watch looks bigger in pictures compared to in person.

One more pic better angle. By the way 170mm wrist around 57-60 across. Larger than credit card.

I think because your forearm is so thick, you could pull off the 42mm with ease, and I usually tend to err on the side of 38mm when in doubt.

I'm thinking the white band makes the watch seem a bit smaller.

This.
My thoughts exactly, usually lighter colors take up less space, appearing to be smaller. If I had to base it off of us the pictures you have posted the 42mm works, but that last picture just screams "Smartwatch" nothing wrong with that if you like it though...

However, give your order a try! I think the 38mm SSG would look nice on you, just stick to bands that are thick...

When I was trying on the 38mm SS with modern buckle it changed the look of the watch (made the watch seem smaller on my wrist), we ( Associate and I) determined that it was because the way that the band is a straight cut in width and also the flat texture of the band. In contrast to the classic leather band, where the band tapers from wide at the base of the watch, to thin at the prongs and wholes at the end of the band, plus the actual texture of leather.

In short stick with bands that taper from wide to thin, if its anything like the modern buckle where its a straight cut band it could change the appearance of the watch.

get 42, you will regret 38. I got 38 and it looks like a women's watch and looks similar to yours in pictures, but in real life the watches look smaller.

Depends on wrist size. 42mm looks silly on smaller wrists, but okay on chunkier wrists. Also, the watch face material can make a difference.

It is really interesting how the watch color and picture vs. real life make such a HUGE difference in the way it actually looks on a wrist.

Every wrist picture I've seen of the 42mm SG w/ Black Band makes it look gigantic. The same pics of the 42mm White Sport don't look nearly as big. Also - having tried both on a couple times at the store, the 38mm is quite a bit smaller in person than the pics here make it. Same with the 42mm.

The color thing makes sense to an extent on how perception of size can change based on shadings. And my theory of why the pictures don't really convey the real life perception of the size is that the proximity and angle 95% of these wrist shots are taken are just too zoomed in and provide no real context.

That is why I took this pic (not the best pic but I think it gives a truer feel for the size on my wrist in proportion to my body)...

Totally agree. The iphone camera (assuming what most are using) has a pretty wide-angle lens, which is likely distorting the center a bit. I'd say you'd have to take a picture from at least 1-2ft away to minimize the bulbous/distortion effect.

I'm already set on the 42mm Space Gray Sport that I got, but a general note to other posters -

Try to show the same thing on the face of the 38mm and 42mm when doing comparisons (whether a watch face, glance, whatever), you'll find folks can more easily give suggestions that way.

Tough to do that since the store models are in demo mode and cycle through random screens.
