I think Steve Jobs did some good things and made some bad mistakes today. The offer of free bumpers was good, the offer to take back the phone for a full refund was good. However, he made a major mistake by denying that there is a problem and comparing the drops bars on the IP4 to other manufacturers devices.
It is now an accepted fact that the external antenna is a problem and that you can alleviate the problem with a Bumper case. However, do not believe for one minute that the problem exist on all phones. It does not exist on the Iphone 3gs it does not exist on the Iphone 3G and it certainly does not exist on the other devices he referenced.
The problem is specific to the IP4. If you think this is wrong then please tell me where I need to put my hand on the 3GS to reduce the signal level.
How will this affect Apple. This is difficult to predict but I suspect there are a lot of people sitting on the sideline waiting for a resolution who are now not going to buy the phone, at least not until a design change that fixes the issue.
I am a great apple fan and have many of their products including an iphone 3GS but I will stay with my existing model until there is a new version of this phone that finally fixes the problem.
Those of you who are happy to keep your phone and use a Bumper case, I am confident you will have little or no performance problems. However, you will get a rude awakening when you try to sell the phone on the used market in 12 months time and find it has little or no value.

I want compensation for the 3rd-party case that I already bought.

And the people in hell want ice water...

Did you buy the case JUST because of the signal issue? If that was your only purpose? And why a case and not a bumper?
Look, I'm not trying to pick at nits here, but what about the person who went out and bought 3 different color bumpers to suit their moods? Or the person who bought 3 cases because they wanted varying levels of protection? The list of possibilities goes on...
If the phone with the case offer isn't what you want or need, return the whole shooting match and get what better suits your needs.

I can show you my iPhone 4 that does not drop calls simply by touching. And i am sure there are lots of other users on here that can show you their phones as well.

Why keep the phone and complain if it drops calls by just touching it ? Since you have kept it this long, it is apparent the problem is not as bad as you make it seem.

Please show me a phone that drops calls simply by touching?

Are you basing this on videos you have seen or from personal experience of owning an iPhone 4 ?

I have a 3G iPhone and have owned several Blackberry phones (work provided) over three networks (Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T) and NONE have dropped the signal like the iPhone 4 videos show because of the way I hold it.

The phone has been returned three times. Today marks the fourth time it has gone back. The only reason why I have not bail completely is because an app I use for my job. I’m not saying everyone is having these issues but the problem still exists. Like Toyota not everyone had the accelerator problem but Toyota still took care of the issue 100%. Providing a bumper does not solve the issue another reason why Consumer Reports still won’t recommend buying the Iphone.

I know that it's not going to happen, and I really am more miffed than truly upset about it. The signal issue was indeed a large component of my purchasing decision. I didn't get a case because I distinguish cases from bumpers as you did in your question; to me, a case is more than just a surround for the antenna, it also offers some measure of protection for the back. That was the other component of my purchasing decision.

Every iPhone 4 does not have this problem either.

He did offer solution for your #2, and that is a full refund. Return the phone, take your money and buy a phone that works, and stop complaining.

1.) Every phone does not have this problem.

2.) I want Apple to come up with solution that doesn't involve dressing up a $700 phone with a $30 case.

My phone "works" just fine, thank you very much!

Get over, its really not that big of a problem!

A 600 dollar device unsubsidized drops calls when you touch the left side of the phone is a HUGE problem. I’m glad your phone works great. However, for those like me whose phone had this flaw Apple should step up and fix it. A bumper is NOT a fix it’s a temporary band aid if that.

I bet there is not one user who lives in a rural area that has a signal problem with their phone. My theory is that signal loss stems from an overcrowded AT&T network. Thanks.

What do I want? First, I need you shut up?
Second, Steve needs to apologize about the issue. Stop dragging other phone makers. Iphone 4 has more issues on antenna than any other phones.

My phone works better than my nexus one. I haven't dropped a call, it has kick arse games, the battery last 3 times as long, and when I am work I can see my son in the morning before he goes to daycare on face time. Now stop your whining and buy a different phone.

you hit the nail on the head! this was one of my thoughts why i didnt buy into a 18 - 24 month contract

MORON, it's called an iPHONE. Don't you think it should make PHONE calls. People like you with your fowl mouth only make things worse. And by the way, I DID take them back! I'm just sticking around to read moronic posts like yours. IQ of -0 much!

My personal iPhone 4 hasn't come in the mail yet, but my sister let me borrow hers for a few days and boy do I love it.

I'm sorry you live in an area with subpar reception :( I really hope they fix this for you soon.

P.S. The fact that you stick around the forums shows your true colors. You'll buy another one down the road ;)

Steve jobs is awesome right at the forefront of his product. And he called out all the whining. Basically no one is returning the phone and complaints are very low. He knows that people just want to raise a fuss for no good reason.

I love my iPhone 4... I've had no issues with it, and am so happy I have it.

That being said, I'm not sure Apple's move today was the best possible move. It was important to acknowledge any issues that have come to light. The media is good at taking even one person's opinion, and making it seem like it's a rampant problem.

While Apple acknowledged their issue, I feel they hurt the effectiveness by adding the 'but.' 'Yes, we've got an issues but the rating for the iphone 4 is higher, the return rate is lower....' As much as I was very interested in seeing those numbers, I don't know if the media influenced public want to hear that rather than just, "Hey... this is the issue. Here's what we can do to fix it. We're very sorry."

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to play 'words with friends' on my wonderful iPhone 4, and possibly make a phone call that won't be disconnected.

Are you basing this on videos you have seen or from personal experience of owning an iPhone 4 ?

Since your asking, I'm basing it off two friends who have the iPhone 4 and have replicated the problem right in front of me, about 15 you tube videos, Consumer Reports, all the news coverage, and the fact that Steve Jobs held a press conference to address the issue.

And since you are so concerned...I am a typical early adopter of i-products. I purchased the new i5 MacBook, the first generation iPod Nano, and the iPhone 3G on the first day of their release. I would have purchased the iPhone 4 on its release but my 3G's "home" button completely quit working two months ago. So I got a brand new 3G replacement phone from Apple without having to extend my contract. The replacement cost me $200 so I didn't want to throw the phone away after only two months of use. My wife's plan expires a little later so I thought I would "live/survive" with my brand new 3G until her contract came up. It would also give me the chance to see the performance of the new iPhone 4....which it has. I will get another iPhone in the future...once this issue is fixed. I am also curious to see if iPhone will truly be available for Verizon in January.

I am a heavy drinker of the Apple Kool-Aid, but not so much so that I can stick my head in the sand and pretend like there isn't an issue here.

EDIT:
My response to the original poster "I have a 3G iPhone and have owned several Blackberry phones (work provided) over three networks (Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T) and NONE have dropped the signal like the iPhone 4 videos show because of the way I hold it." was in response to Steve Job's opinion that ALL smart phones experience this issue. My two buddies can hold their iPhone 4's right in front of me and make their signals drop and I am unable to do the same with my phones no matter how I grab them. I guess Steve needs to come to my house and show me how to hold my 3G and blackberry to make it happen.
