I hold Apple to a higher standard than other companies, when I pay this much for a computer. The only reason I call them mistakes is because I personally never liked these features, and I don't think anyone enjoyed the lack of SD card slot, USB-C charging or the lack of HDMI – none of these offer any advantage to anyone.
My problem with the touch bar is that it's not tactile, changing the volume and brightness requires you to look, press, hold, and drag which is 4 things instead of just pressing without looking which is 1 thing.
I also find the implementation buggy, with things like Safari tabs simply displaying garbage 50% of the time, and every app having its own weird implementation... I just resorted to making it display exactly what the traditional function rows would display, which of course defeats the purpose entirely and offers a worse experience as it's not tactile.
Worst of all the TouchBar completely turns off after a few seconds so the usefulness of say, seeing a seek bar while playing a video is lost. They shouldn't have gone with OLED (due to burnin) for this reason.
Another obvious issue was that Apple never released a magic keyboard with a Touch Bar.
Maybe if a few million MacPro/iMac/MacMini/MBA users also had access, support/adoption would be better.
A decent portion of MBP customers also use their laptop in either clamshell mode or at least on a stand while using an external keyboard and mouse. If it can only be used sporadically, then it’s very unlikely to ever make its way into anyone’s workflow.
It becomes a gimmick at best.
