I hold Apple to a higher standard than other companies, when I pay this much for a computer. The only reason I call them mistakes is because I personally never liked these features, and I don't think anyone enjoyed the lack of SD card slot, USB-C charging or the lack of HDMI – none of these offer any advantage to anyone.

My problem with the touch bar is that it's not tactile, changing the volume and brightness requires you to look, press, hold, and drag which is 4 things instead of just pressing without looking which is 1 thing.

I also find the implementation buggy, with things like Safari tabs simply displaying garbage 50% of the time, and every app having its own weird implementation... I just resorted to making it display exactly what the traditional function rows would display, which of course defeats the purpose entirely and offers a worse experience as it's not tactile.

Worst of all the TouchBar completely turns off after a few seconds so the usefulness of say, seeing a seek bar while playing a video is lost. They shouldn't have gone with OLED (due to burnin) for this reason.

Another obvious issue was that Apple never released a magic keyboard with a Touch Bar.

Maybe if a few million MacPro/iMac/MacMini/MBA users also had access, support/adoption would be better.

A decent portion of MBP customers also use their laptop in either clamshell mode or at least on a stand while using an external keyboard and mouse. If it can only be used sporadically, then it’s very unlikely to ever make its way into anyone’s workflow.

It becomes a gimmick at best.

best double-surprise,

  1. A week earlier than I was expecting it
  2. And it's monday instead of Tuesday
What else do we need?

Interested to know if apple will still allow charging through the usb-c ports.
Wouldn’t surprise me if they disable it to sell more MagSafe chargers.
I sure as hell hope not. I have no desire to carry around another cord. USB-C charges fine on the road and accepts power from my monitor via the single power / video / audio / data cable when I am home.

Not a fan of adding back the other ports either. Most people who absolutely need HDMI already have a adapter of some sort (dongle, dock, etc.). More and more conference rooms are adapting one of the wireless screen sharing options or provide multiple cable ends for video.

Up in the air over the TouchBar. I use it a lot when I have my notebook open. But most of the time my MBP is closed in a Satech stand with the single USB-C cable attached. Perhaps if Apple had offered a keyboard with the TouchBar or more aggressively supported it it would have garnered more traction.

who wants to bet that the new design brick takes its cue from the redesigned iMacs and includes the ethernet port on the brick itself (for the higher-end configs, maybe?)
And lose your internet connection whenever you're done charging? I love ethernet, but that brick doesn't sound like a laptop feature to me.

I'm a little bit curious why they didn't make the event announcement yesterday. I guess it wasn't an issue because nobody has to make flight plans. It was good for us Canadians though since we were on holiday yesterday.

I'm hopeful for the M1X Mac mini sooner rather than later.

As for the M1X iMac, I'm guessing spring 2022.

That's one reason I've been thinking about the M1X Mac mini or even a late 2022 M2 Mac mini. The newness of the M1 line worries me a bit, esp. given the reports of flakiness with monitors and Bluetooth, among other things.

The pundits are suggesting it will not necessarily be along side the new MacBook Pros, but may not be that far off either. But then again some are suggesting it won't be until spring. See above. If it's that late, I might just wait for an M2 model in the fall. The M2 would be slower than the M1X, but it would also be cheaper.
If the mini is announced on Monday, then I’m happy for everyone. However, when these events are announced, inevitably the predictions become more wish fulfillment than reality, and then when Apple disappoints, the number of people here who get extremely upset is quite hilarious. So many here don’t temper their expectations with Apple’s reality, which has been extremely plain vanilla with Macs. Apple still seems to think we all want iPad Pros, despite the fact that iPadOS needs some major philosophical changes in order to replace a Mac for power users.

Airpods 3 is comimng for sure. I wish for a MacBook Pro 16.

Already looking forward to the posts (in the weeks) after the event on how apple did everything wrong, why apple sucks ever since Tim Apple became CEO, how ugly the new design is, and of course all the "I will be returning my new MacBook" threads!
