I'll give this a try. I'm not on a contract, but I purchased someone else's contract phone because I forgot to ask them if it was carrier unlocked before buying it.

Wish me luck!

After seeing this thread I requested an unlock and after a few tries it was approved.
I then tried multiple restores, foreign SIM cards etc and I kept getting the activation required.
A couple of days ago I requested another unlock in case the first one somehow hadn't gone through and it was approved.
Still the same issues.
Am I doing something wrong?

During activation enter the iTunes email address and password. That is all.

Launch day iPhone 6 Plus here, took me roughly 8 tries and i got a Congrats email. Since I'm jailbroken on 8.1, is there a way for me to restore/unlock and rejailbreak?

Why bother restoring? You are unlocked you don't need to restore. Just insert a non-AT&T sim and you are good to go.

Gotcha, just tried a different sim and it worked. So what is the purpose of restoring and receiving the unlocked message?

Mine took 12 tries. The first 11 I would get an email within 2 minutes saying I was denied because of NEXT plan payments not paid off yet. On the twelfth try, I didn't get anything back the whole day so I knew they was processing it. Sure enough, the next morning I was granted my request.

You just have to be adamant about it, IMO.

Thanks for the advice. I guess I'll have to follow your lead.. hopefully I come out with success. Will report on the progress..

It happened to mine as well. I was one of the few first on this post that get unlock during the first week of this post. The first time I put in a T-Mobile SIM after receiving the unlock email from AT&T, I was prompt to put in the activation info (iTune account email and password). Someone on this post said that it's a one time deal and the iPhone once unlock (it is), will not ask for that again when insert another non AT&T SIM. It works after I put in those info and working ever since. Last week, before I gave that phone to my mom to use oversea and put in her oversea SIM, it prompt that activation request again and it works after I put in the info...does that mean everytime I put in "another brand" SIM, it will ask again?

Hmmm, I gave up after 5 tries, should have tried several more times. They told me I could not quite AT&T, told me that 3X. I called once again and they gave in. I think AT&T just needs persistence. Eventually it is they who give up.

Wait a min.. You actually "called?" I have tried too many times.. I'm getting tired of the rejections..

Didn't work yesterday... I did it plenty of times. I'll try later on today, but I don't think that it will happen.

Hmmm....im in the same boat. Got approved the very first try and received teh instructions to restore. But you're saying I'm already unlocked without going through that process thus losing my jb? I don't have a sim card to test it with.

get a sim card from ebay or something

The AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon devices are all the same.

The new sim free models are actually the same as the Sprint phones aside from being unlocked and have a few additional bands that the AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon devices don't have.

The only real benefit to the new unlocked phone over the other devices is that it is fully unlocked and it works on more networks. If you only plan on using AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon, your unlocked AT&T phone will do that just fine.

Can you tell me if the unlocked phones Apple is selling on the Apple Store will work with a Verizon SIM card? Apple advertises compatibility with only GSM networks.

The iPhone 6/6+ A1586 I think it is AKA SIM FREE has been confirmed to work on all networks including Verizon and Sprint according to posts on the forum here.
