Man I am really getting the shaft on resale value with my 2008 MacBook Pro!!! :( Usually there will only be two refreshes before I upgrade, but now there will be 3 or 4 lol.

My friend JUST bought a MacBook Pro too and I told him it was a safe time, and now they spring this? Apple has been a bit unpredictable lately!

LET THE BLU-RAY WHINING BEGIN!

Any bets on 16:9 screen???

If they make any significant changes like that, I am going to be jealous! :(

I say months, just my guess though.

They will not do it right now because it will take away the spotlight from the iMac, MacBook, & Mac Mini. And they will not do it in December too close to Christmas. So it will either be in November, or not till January next year!

Unfortunately, few people compare the prices to PC's, something Apple counts on. Otherwise, a high-end 15" MBP would cost $1000, not $1700+.
The $1,699 model is a MacBook Pro in screen size only. Otherwise it is the 15" Macbook everybody has wanted for ages but not at Macbook prices.

Any bets on 16:9 screen???

I certainly hope not, it would be a big step back in terms of usability. They can get away with it on the iMacs because there's plenty of screen real estate. 16:9 is getting pushed on computer users because it saves manufacturers money standardizing screen sizes across their consumer HDTV and computer lines.

Sprinkle a little marketing magic on top and we have "HDTV cinema screens" on our tiny laptops, despite the fact that it sucks for working and viewing documents.

If these turn out to be MBP Tablets, well, that's about the only thing that would get me to buy one. Battery life in current one is fine, as is processor. Maybe updated graphics in 13", but I doubt I'd do anything if they updated that.

All I wish for is the return of the Express card slot. Far more useful to me than multiple cores hardly any software use yet

Has anyone done any research into the timetable form when new product designations appear in OS X to when they're actually released?

It'd be nice if there were a tag system in place so we could research that.

My cursory research from previous OS X updates suggests that 10.6.2 would be released around the first or second week of November.
This is, of course, pure conjecture based on previous update schedules and specifically 10.x.2 releases

Cataloging the timetables from when new model designations are found to their release dates might help us guess when the MBPs will be released.

(Basically, it's either November or January since Apple doesn't release products during the holiday buying season)

I thought that until recently, but having got used to working with a computer full-time I simply don't use my home desktop for anything requiring real power. Beyond general browsing/chatting/watching/listening and VNC/RDP/SSH sessions, I don't do much - this way, it's much more flexible (especially in virtualisation terms).

I hear you, and actually now that you mention it I would probably not be doing as much intensive work on laptop as I would be on my desktop (pro audio work)... so maybe a quad core laptop is a bit overkill for me after all :) Thanks for the perspective!

As a casual reader, it'd be nice if Macrumors linked the specific processors/chipsets to a thread or page where we could read more general information about them. Neha-what? :p

let's do it
do a refresh before xmas!
even if it is only a minor speed bump....still sounds good

If it's for the holiday shopping season, then they would need to update it in the next few weeks. That said, a MBP for a Christmas gift would be quite a gift.

can't be fussed to read through all the posts...

anyway, the presence of just *two* new numbers suggests that the 15" and 17" will get an upgrade worthy of a new model number (i.e. new chip architecture) while the 13" will simply get a speed bump.

wow i'm really wishing i waited buying my macbook pro for these new models, but that always seems to be the case.

The little chatter I've heard has been of Apple using six core processors giving us a 12 core Mac Pro with 64GBs of RAM. This is rumor from a couple sites we won't know till it happens like normal.
The "little chatter" is likely referring to Westmere/Gulftown, which isn't due until hopefully earl 2010 (officially it's 1H 2010, but a lot of speculation has it coming out Q1).

But yeah, there's been some talk of Apple getting first dibs. I hope they do. I just hope that this time, they'll maybe go with the desktop version (the i9) for at least the entry-level Mac Pro.

It's only a step back in usability if they reduce the vertical pixels. They can go to a 16x9 screen but increase the pixels more than 900 and everything is OK. In this case, if they went from 16:10 1440x900 to 16:9 1600x900 we would see an increase in resolution and that would be a good thing.
If they did 1920x1080 16:9 that would be even better. (Except on the 17", which would suck...)Maybe 2048x1152 on the 17" wouldn't be too bad.

And I am wondering whether this refers to the Apple slate mentioned by a New York Times executive editor? If not, then has someone see another model reference in 10.6.2 to the slate?

I love my 15" MBP 5,1 but I'd love to have a true alternative to my MP. Running mail, ical, safari, iphoto, itunes, ms word, dreamweaver, photoshop and vmware fusion (xp pro) all at the same time is so laggy it bites :(

My guess is a quad-core chip with a decent clock speed with about 8GB of RAM rather than the 4 I have currently would do everything I need from a mobile perspective. I'd still use my MP for really heavy stuff like video encoding but an MBP with quad-core type specs would take care of 70%-80% of my needs.

Any idea if we'll see something like that in 2010? I just got my MBP in April, but my guess is it would have a good resale value even next year.

I am film-maker and I wouldn't mind it. I know they do 16:10 so there is space for the toolbar on 16:9 HD video, but really it wouldn't really bother me, and I think the standardization would be nice.

I can see it happening because of what you mentioned, but also because of Blu-Ray and HD in general, and also the new iTunes Extras and LP specifically being set up for 16:9 aspect ratio HD screens! :D Also, if you now Apple, you can bet they will standardize it across their product lines. They are not going to leave the iMac as some random odd man out. Watch for a Cinema Display refresh with a new bigger one, maybe a 27", and the laptops to follow all going 16:9.

And for that matter, I have been wishing for a long time that they would make the iPhone and iPods 16:9 for better media suitability!

Maybe, with a bit of luck, the new 'iTablet'? And otherwise everyone who just bought a MBP are screwed. And oh, I hope the prices go down because if you compare it to a laptop (from Acer, Dell etc.) the MacBook(s) Pro(s) are way too expensive.

amen, or atleast a built in esata port

Im looking for better graphics card, quad core, 8gb ram standard, and an alternative to seagate's 7200rpm 500gb drives. I cant believe hitachi's 7200 drive went 12.5 over 9.5mm, I have never had better experiences with HD's than Hitachi's. I have had the 7200 320gb since it was released.

I still think quad cores are only going to be available in the 17" in the next 2 quarters for heat dissipation. I like the portability of the 13 and 15, but I may end up opting for the 17 now since I have no interest in maintaining my pc desktop any further.

Ideal spec and price, and I am going to be reasonable in my own interpretation of availability of parts and capitalist trends in technology's market

Thanksgiving week:

•13" 1280 non 16:9 screen (just too small of a lappy to justify newer screens) 2.6+ ghz capable dual cores
w/e the new integrated graphics card is replacing the 9400m 1099 still

•15" 1680 resolution screens 16x9 likely
2.8+ dual cores
new independent graphics + intel's integrated
1399

•15" high end spec
3.2+ ghz dual cores
new graphics card @ 1gb onboard ram
1599

•17" 1920 res as before
3.2ghz dual
new card @ 1gb onboard and slightly higher clocked cuse of larger body
express card slot
1899

•17"
quad core ~ 2.4 or w/e available
higher lvl card than previous
express card slot
2099

so only real advancement other than slight boost in clocks and move from nvidia cards this year

q1 10

high end 15 and 17 to get arrandale, prolly same prices as posted above, likely same card as w/e is on the table for coming update

while apple hasnt seemed thrilled on the blueray drives, I bet we can expect to see them as build to order options at apples ridiculous 400$ surcharge in pros and mbp and imac at end of q1 10

Let me pose this to you guys...

Would you be ok if the lower end MBP's kept the Core 2 Duo and instead upped the speed and added the ION2 chip?

Meanwhile, the higher end gets the Arrandale chips and discrete cards?

Im quite looking forward to this update, i'd say im more interested in what apple can pull out of intels hat so to speak, I doubt i would have money to buy a new laptop, i have a perfectly decent one already. The 15" 2.4 non uni. But it would just be nice to see apple push the bar a bit higher yet again n get back on top of the game :)

I'd have been happy if the 2.53 had become the base level MBP13 with 4GB RAM. With ION2 and 2.53/2.66 or similar I'd be delighted. Tomorrow please :apple:!
