Yes you all. Just go down to a at&t store. Its better that way & you dont have to deal with the hassle. Sometimes you get reps that wont do it for you, or that will give you a hard time calling in to 611. But if you go down, & make sure it is a (corpate store) they very rarely have any problems doing it at all for you. You want to make sure that the system doesent switch you back to a capped plan on its own. Better to have someone do it manually. 3rd party at&t stores and those mom & pop booths that are in the mall sometimes doesent have enough access, to switch for you. Thats why i recommend you go to a at&t (official) store.

Thats correct no MMS, for me i could care less but Definitely a big down side to that route.

I can live without MMS! does anyone know if i can get away with continually using this $20 plan? I'd be saving $15/month

Dann, I'm thinking of attempting this. I got the 4s as a new AT&T customer Oct 14th. So you were a new AT&T customer with the 2GB plan right1? I just want to know exactly what you did and if your $20 unlimited data plan switched over yet?

Restore your original iPhone with iTunes? The latest version of iTunes ok?

Took your ACTIVE iPhone 4s micro sim card and popped it in the iPhone 2g?

Activated the iPhone 2g and select the 2G unlimited plan?

Pop that sim back into the 4s and wait for AT&T to transfer over your data to the unlimited 3G plan?

Ok my question is what if you have unlimited texting before this? I don't want my unlimited texting plan coming off and them charging for all these texts?

Thanks

Heres the deal. If you are on an individual line and not a family plan with a family texting plan, then when you go to select the data plan your your current texting plan will be replaced with the new option you chose. This is fine because you can switch right back to the unlimited texting plan right when you go back to the 4s. It gives you an option on the iTunes screen to select unlimited data and 200 texts for 20$, unlimited data and 1500 texts for $30, or unlimited data and unlimited texts for 40 dollars. To ensure theres no overages just be safe and pick the 40 dollars for both, just remember you have no mms capability. Once you go back to the 4s just choose the unlimited texts again for 20. They are both the same price and include unlimited texts, but the way i understand it is that they have different feature codes and the newer plan is provisioned for MMS as well, so just switch back to that and everything should be fine, and no overages to worry about. Basically it really doesn't matter if unlimited texts is what you want, because aside from the above details its the same price regardless of what you do with your data.

Gotcha. Have you attempted this? I'd hate to waste money on an iPhone 2G and not be able to get the unlimited data for my 4s. Do you know if this will work with my current micro sim or would I need a brand new sim for the iPhone 2G?

Yup, I restored my 2g iphone to factory settings and plugged in my already activated iphone 4s microsim into the 2g.
I activated the 2g with the $20 unlimited plan and then moved the microsim back to the 4s. And yes, I used the newest version of itunes (10.5)

I still havent been switched over to the $30 unlimted 3g plan. On the at&t site, it lists me under the $20 unlimited 2g plan, but I can still get 3g speeds.

I wouldn't worry about the texts. Just make sure you get switched to the $30 unlimited 3g plan and re-add your unlimited txting option before your billing cycle ends.

The place where people have run into problems is getting the 2g unlimited plan activated...however for me, it was a breeze via itunes. And since I've confirmed you can indeed use an already activated 4s microsim to activate the 2g plan, the whole process is extremely simple and well worth at least an attempt if you have access to a 2g iphone.

----------

Interestingly enough, I keep getting emails from Itunes that AT&T has completed my activation and that I need to reconnect my iphone to my computer to complete the activation.

This is funny because the itunes store actually froze on me during the activation (got that spinning data wheel)...but even with the itunes store malfunctioning, I received the e-mail confirming the activation and thus just disconnected my iphone figuring it didn't matter. I guess because of this, itunes doesn't think completed the activation?

I wonder if this is the reason why I was not switched over yet to the $30 3g plan. I will report back with my findings.

And also, I am for sure on the $20 2g plan.

Just got the text from at&t saying :

"Did you know a data plan is required for your iphone?
We have added an appropriate data & messaging plan."

Checked online on my account and presto ..I have $30 unlimited data + 200 texts for $5.

This still works !!
I used an unactivated sim i got from at&t but i guess you can just use any one that has not been activated on a 2g. I did run into a problem trying to set it up on my itunes on my macbook..Just gave me an iphone screen when i plugged it in but i tried it on my neighbors powerbook g4 with an older version of itunes and it worked. Everthing went as planed except that at the last screen itunes said the network changed or something was trying to finish activating..etc.. and appeared that the process didnt complete. The iphone 2g was still on the "connect to itunes" screen . I had a hunch and just took the sim out of the iphone 2g cut it down to microsim size and put it in my iphone 4 and it worked . I checked online and it said i was on the $20 unlimited data +200 texts. Took a couple days but i finally got that text saying they put me on the "correct data plan" aka $30 unlimited

I am stoked !!!
thank you for all the info in this forum!!!

Yep, attempted and successfully so. It seems to be possible to use the existing sim card, however results have varied. It seems the easiest and only guaranteed way is to go and grab a new sim card from the store. I simply told the associate that i had an original iPhone i wanted to re-activate so i needed an untouched unactivated sim card, they will ring it up as device only type of deal, ask for your number for the receipt, but won't put any info on the card itself.

No worries. That last step deal happened with me as well. Its an automated e-mail designed to be sent when the activation system is finished so you can plug back into iTunes and the computer can trigger the original iPhone to unlock and finally get off that connect to iTunes screen. I never did get off that screen, well i did but i had to jailbreak it and i still got the system sweep to switch me over.

And finally the system sweep has gotten to me and switched me automatically to the $30 unlimited plan and kept me on the 1500 txts a month as well. insert enthusiastic remark here!
Note: The system sweep automatically put me on the 4s plan, that was kind of it. Also, i first switched my sim back to the 4s on wednesday evening so it took about 5 days to have the system sweep change things for me.

stuck on time out waiting for activation from ATT screen. I have now opened a ticket with 2nd tier engineer. Hope they can help me push the upgrade in. This is so weird i have 2 iphoen 2gs and both are not activating properly.

I have unlimited text under family plan. Will I be able to go back to unlimited text after this trick through OLAM? or do I have to call them and change back to unlimited text?

Just to confirm there is no MMS support because with the $20 original iPhone Data Plan. MMS is not provisioned with this SOC.

99.999% chance you will be swept to the correct data plan by the automated system. As I have posted before, there is one particular account type that will receive the Admin SMS Txt messages about the wrong data plan but will not be moved to a different plan. It has to do with the agreement with AT&T for this account type. :D

Not really this same thing happend earlier this year between April and May. Activation got broken but was later working again at the end of May.

While you wait for a call back from engineering, log on to AT&T OLAM and check your account to see if the data plan may have been added to your line. It does work for many even with the original iPhone stuck on the Connect to iTunes for the final tether connection to complete the activation step.

Update: You guys were right. I was just switched to the $30 unlimited plan...didnt get to stay on the $20

It was maybe after a year that the 3G iPhone was released that Apple started changing people using original iPhone data plans with 3G iPhones to the 3G data plan.

I remember using the 2G data plan for about six months before they changed me to the 3G data plan.

somehow i got the 2g unlimited + 200 txt on my line but now when i try doing it for my wife's line it's back to the white iphone page again. Somehow i think it's Apple's activation server that's over loaded or something.

You will keep your unlimited text under the family plan, although you could switch back through OLAM there will be no need to. Good luck. :D

How much do they charge you for the 1500 txts under the 4s? I saw an earlier post saying $10 but I would have thought that they would charge you $15 for this plan when switching from the 2g to the 4s..

The Unlimited plan for the 1500 text messages is $10.00
Sometimes it will not transfer over to your current iphone though. It depends on how you go by it.

Interesting ... thanks both for this feedback/info.

Would you suggest that I switch my current $20 unlimited/200 txts to the $30 unlimited/1500 txts while I still have the iphone 2g for one billing month and then upgrade to the 4s? Would this increase my chances of being able to get the $10 text plan? I've had my iphone 2g since it first came out 4 years ago. I've been on the same $20 unlimited/200 txts plan since 2007 (I've waited way too long to upgrade, but anyone who bought the original iphone back then really got hosed on the pricing of the phone). I should have no problems with the unlimited data, but I would like to have the 1500 txts at $10 when I upgrade.

That being said, when I go to AT&T's website, do I need to choose "none" or "pay as you go" for my texting plan to get the grandfathered text plan? (I haven't gotten past the choosing the phone screen on ATT's website.)
Sorry for all the newbie questions.

Thanks for your help!

2 Scenarios, 1 question:
Scenario 1: New individual account.
Scenario 2: New line, turning an individual account into a family plan.

Since iTunes wants you to agree to a 2 year service agreement, Could you immediately upgrade to, say, a 4S at the subsidized cost?

Yes you should switch to the 1500 SMS Txt msg plan now while using the original iPhone.

You will not have the option to select the 1500 SMS option later. When you later upgrade to the iPhone 4S, you will have the option to keep both your unlimited data plan and your current SMS Txt message plan.

Doing away with the unlimited data I can somewhat understand but why eliminate the SMS options? What if your not a heavy texter and don't need unlimited for $20/mo?

The 1500 text plan would be perfect for me because most my friends have iMessage.
