If I do this trick (not on the primary line), would employer discount on the family plan be removed even if I go back to 4S in couple of days? That wouldn't be worth it for me then.
Just to follow-up on the comments from Applejuiced concerning FAN discounts. No impact to your primary line when you use it on a secondary line. Just no discounts will apply on the line that the original iPhone is registered on.

Please note that if you use the original iPhone loophole on your primary line, you will lose any FAN discount on that line as long as the IMEI of the original iPhone is registered on that line.

Your FAN discount will be restored once you update your account to remove the original iPhone's IMEI and replace it with another IMEI.

Doing away with the unlimited data I can somewhat understand but why eliminate the SMS options? What if your not a heavy texter and don't need unlimited for $20/mo?

The 1500 text plan would be perfect for me because most my friends have iMessage.

Yeah, lots of pissed subscribers on the AT&T forums about that one. Hopefully they will introduce more text options soon.

Then you should pick the 1500 SMS Txt message plan on the original iPhone before upgrading and you will be able to keep it. The SMS Txt messaging plans are grandfathered just like the unlimited iPhone data plan. Just don't make any changes and you will not lose it.

I can see AT&T introducing a couple of options but priced higher including unlimited texting.

200 texts - $15/mo
1000 texts - $20/mo
1500 texts - $25/mo
Unlimited texts - $35/mo

Seems outrageous but who says they can't?

Good info Dave.
I upgraded both my secondary lines to unlimited but mine is the primary and I already had the unlimited grandfathered.
So makes sense that I didn't lose the discount.

One more random fact. The reason that you would lose any FAN discount is because of the original revenue sharing agreement between AT&T and Apple.

How much do they charge you for the 1500 txts under the 4s? I saw an earlier post saying $10 but I would have thought that they would charge you $15 for this plan when switching from the 2g to the 4s..
Hey sorry for the delay. That's correct, its 10 dollars with the 2g unlimited data but once its switched over its 15.00 for the 1500 hundred texts/mo. I double checked my account info a second ago to confirm.

screwed :(

I tried activating the iphone 2g last night, selected the $20 plan and itunes timed out. OLAM detected iphone 2g but it is not showing the data plan. Called AT&T and they said that the phone is activated from their end but for the data plan to appear, I have to complete the itunes part and get past emergency screen. They connected me to apple. The apple rep told be to restore the phone and try.

My power button was broken (I got this phone for really cheap and didn't think I would need a working power button  ). So I couldn't restore or even jailbreak it. Chatted with AT&T and the rep opened a case for me to add MMV1 data plan. He said they can't add it and has to be done case by case basis and in the meantime I can't change the sim to any other phone. Basically I can't use a phone for 72 hrs

I had a perfect working iphone 2G and couldnt get it to activate. Did all the right steps, got a brand new inactive sim from AT&T etc.....
Spend tons of time with both AT&T and Apple support reps to try to get it resolved. I got no help, most gave me some bs excuse to get me off the phone, others said they cant do it, or they will call me back later and never did or they will have their supervison call me to get it resolved and never heard back and other nonsense.
It is far far from a simple process trying to do this yourself to activate an iphone 2G in order to get the unlimited data.
Like mentioned above I would suggest letting him do it, its well worth the fee he charges.
I wasted so much time and gas going back and forth to the Apple and AT&T store and got nowhere on my own.

Hey there Applejuiced!!
How you ya doing? & How are you enjoying that unlimited data?
Im glad that i was able to get you taken care of after you had to hassle constantly with at&t, & apple about this!!

Worked out great, now there's no more of those annoying texts from AT&T you reached 90% of your monthly data allowance, no overage fees, no shutting off carrier data for the last 10 days.
Good stuff.

Ok, long story short I left ATT for Sprint and I came back to ATT for the 4s, but wasnt able to get the unlimited internet.

I get an old iPhone 2g and a new sim card, go to ATT store and get them to switch my IMEI and SIM over to the 2g and get the unlimited data plan for the iphone 2g,

2 or 3 days later I go back to or different ATT store and get a microSIM and get my iphone 4s IMEI but back in my account....

I get to keep the unlimited internet plan?

I really dont mine paying the 30 bucks a month....i just need my unlimited back

Wish it was that simple.
I tried that many times and its not going to happen.
They will not switch you to the unlimited plan at an AT&T store or by calling AT&T customer service. They will tell you they cant do it and that you will have to do it yourself at home by activating the 2G with itunes.
And that's where the nightmare begin cause you will never be able to activate it to begin with in order to get the $20 unlimited plan and then switch it to the $30 one.

Update - Finally!!! I was able to get unlimited on 4S. Took entire day with multiple calls to AT&T and chat support and apple with no avail. They couldn't add the 2g data plan after activation didn't went through itunes. I was about to give up few minutes ago and said to myself let's try one more time and it activated. I think the difference was (speculation) that when I used a new sim card, it got stuck on please wait for 3 mins screen of itunes (tried 10.5 and 9.0.2 on Windows 7).

Then I tried using the current 4S sim and activated using 9.0.2 and it activated!!! I got an e-mail that my phone has been activated. Previously, it was recognized but AT&T but there wasn't any data plan showing up but now it finally showed up. The next part was a breeze. Asked the chat rep that I am upgrading from iphone 2g to 4S and would like to keep the unlimited plan. He said no problem and took my IMEI and SIM no. updated me to unlimited 3G data.

The process of activating the iphone 2g is a pain and hit or miss but worth if it works.

Good Iprime glad to hear it!!. I was just writing a reply when i saw your post. Some people have claimed this process no longer works, thats bad information check yourself! I went to Dallas over the weekend to visit family and did this process for my sister-in-law on a windows box and for my nephew on his macbook, so it still works. Yes its a aggravating thing and takes time but it will work. I have no problem with Earls presence here and think he's doing a great thing and if you look back you will see that I also suggested Earls service back when i first started the process to anyone who was having to much trouble. That being said and some will scold me for this but I don't think this thread should turn into a Sales pitch or Sales update deal, post in the right place for that but I just Don't think people should be steered away from doing this or attempting it themselves if they choose, so don't say it doesn't work. I hope i didn't offend anyone, and Earl thanks for what you do, but (and this is just my opinion) If we don't keep the nitty gritty sales stuff in the sales forums than someone will WAHHHHH in a way thats not just a friendly post.

I just hope AT&T doesn't find about this. I mean technically its a legitimate loophole. It would suck if they started to see an increase of new customers on unlimited smartphone plans and begin to conduct random audits. Really hoping once its on your account you really are grandfathered in regardless whether or not you got it at the time they offered it.

iprime: yes if you have it done by me, your sim card will become deactiviated. You will need to get another one. & you possibly could use that extra sim, but it would be easier for you to go in to a store as far as "less risks" are concerned. They should be able to take care of you completely. & Yes even though youve attempted this, it still wont be a problem.

coolweirdo: Appreciate the verification. glad that i was able to take care of you!! enjoy that unlimited data!!

iprime: congrats!! glad that you were able to get it added at the end!! Thats what really matters when its all said and done:)

PPFee: Ill be the first to agree with you. & Ive said it before, and ill say it again, that this CAN still be done! It can be troublesome, but it can also be easy, or a hit and miss. & i am here to try to help as much as i can, when i can drop in to offer any help because i am busy usually with 5-7 paying customers a day. Some i get just prefer to use me, for the simple fact that they have no access to a iphone 2G, & find it easier and less troublesome to go through me. it just depends. But yes it can still be done. Just a bit more diffucult than it use to be. But again at the end if one has trouble, or its more convieinent to have it done, then i am a option.

Dallious: Thanks alot!! Enjoy that unlimited data!! glad that i could help out!!:)

I just hope AT&T doesn't find about this.

I think that once we are grandfathered nothing is going to change, the only logical thing to do and to minimize resources would be to close the gateway loophole but that is all. I think AT&T would spent to much on carrying out audits on al recently added uimited accounts and it would piss upo a lot of customers.

Now what I'm wondering is if we will be able to get grandfathered into unlimited LTE. I'm sure the next iPhone iteration will be LTE (iPhone 5) and wouldn't it be cool if we get to keep our unlimited data plans.

hey chestrvg shouldnt be no problem getting it transfered over when lte gets here. It will be for smartphones so heres the link here on the at&t page which is hard to find if you go to the website and search for it just go going to at&t.com....next to impossible...but this direct link takes you to it

http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/plans/data-plans.jsp

Down at the bottom of the page
In the box with the of course TINY writing on their site under the data usuage calculator, box & the let wifi save on usuage box, in the tiny writing it reads:

†If you already have a smartphone and data plan with AT&T (including an unlimited data plan) you are not required to switch to one of the new plans. However, if you want to save money, you may choose to switch without a contract extension.

Now as long as they dont take this away, it shouldn't be no problem.

Wao thank you for the information unlimitedsway so as long as we are locked into an unlimited data plan, we'll be ok on LTE :) way thank you for looking these small prints up.
