I have been lurking for a while here and it seems you are the "guru" for getting it done. I recently picked up an iphone 2g, put my sim card in from my old dumbphone just to see if iTunes would pick it up. Success! It prompts me to activate the phone.

Here is my question: I am going to be doing this trick next week and I need to know if there has to be some kind of usage on the iphone for them to not get suspicious. The reason I ask is that the bottom half of the screen is unresponsive (a common problem I am told) and I wouldnt be able to use it.

I know this is your business and all so free advice might be out of the question, but it doesnt hurt to ask! :D Thanks!!

Hi I just wanted to thank everyone on this board for a lot of useful information.
I have been reading this thread for a long time to prepare.

So I tried out a lot of things and I'll just spell out what I learned as my way of showing appreciation for all the others that have taught me.

I started up 4 lines of service in the last week or so for my family.
I first activated one of the lines, then tried this. No go with my existing setup. I tried again using a brand new activation and that never activated. I got 2 emails, but no activation email. I wonder if this is because I never activated the line according to ATT.

I first attempted to activate on an Windows 7 machine + Itunes 10.5 and no go with my iphone 2g. I got that blank iphone screen when I plugged the phone in. From what I have read, this may be a software issue with the phone or itunes and it eventually may fix itself given enough time. I then proceeded to spend a lot of time jailbreaking using redsn0w .9.4 and restoring to IOS 3.1.3

For me, I'm impatient so I read from a lot of posters that this process is fairly hit or miss. I decided to take an 5yr old laptop and reformat the hard drive and install windows XP on it and itunes 8.0 only. That didn't work since it required a later version of Itunes. I ended up going to Itunes 8.2 since that was the recommended version for iPhones. When I plugged that in, it kept giving me "iphone activation has expired. please plug in the phone again" (I paraphrase since I can't remember the exact words).
I ended up using Itunes 10.2 and installing that.
I did not have any firewalls or anything running. I still suspect this may be a problem for some users who can't get their activations to work. But this is only my personal opinion.

Once I connected, it asked for all of my information and I did continue, selected the unlimited $20 plan.

Once I hit submit, I got the error about activation not complete because it timed out.

I checked my email. There were two emails: one about ATT is now Processing order , Thank you for your Order.

5 minutes later, I got the Activation Complete email.

When I checked online, I see the plan there with unlimited data.
Thanks everyone!

To summarize, I think it really is dependent upon your version of itunes + your operating system + iphone 2g. I couldnt get it to work with an existing laptop, but I did get it working with a newly reimaged laptop. And from what I've read on this forum, that appears to be the only factor that I can think of that explains why some people can get it to work and not others.

I can't get my iphone 2g to make calls or text messages but that's fine since I just wanted the grandfathered unlimited data.

Hey there DCSRM:

Like i said before. I dont mind at all giving some free advice. As long as im not busy, & i see your post. But no. You dont have to have used the iphone 2g at all. Depending on what you say to them though, they may get suspicious, if you have to call in and put up a argue about your unlimited plan. Your best bet is knowing what to say, and having your story straight before you call in (if you have to) Good luck! I hope that you get it sucessfully;)

hey there Danny Boy

congratulations!! You put in the determination and it paid of!
Youre welcome for the useful information. At least from me. & Yes you are exactly right. It does depend on the iphone, your usb cable, & your computer. Some do not work at all no matter how many times you try. Now a days it looks like its 50/50 getting the activation to go all the way through on itunes and it completing on its own, and you getting the activation complete email.

I just ported to AT&T from another company. Received the 4S today and am interested in trying to get unlimited data. Since i am a new at&t customer and have not activated anything before, will I need to activate the new sim (the one that came with the new phone) on the 4S before trying the iPhone 2G trick or do I just pop the new sim in the 2G and start from there? Also, will I need to use 2 sims like some others have stated? Thanks.

Hey Everyone!

I really wish I would have seen this forum before I ordered and received my 2G to do this to my 4S... I went to ATT and got a SIM card for the 2G, put it in the phone and went through the Activation process which ended at "Your activation requires additional time to complete."

I've read literally a hundred different pages throughout numerous forums, and it sounds like it is in "Limbo"? Should I do anything at this stage? Just a little unsure of where to go here... I chose the 2G Unlimited plan within iTunes, but can't login into my ATT account to see if it was processed because it is a brand new account and need service again to setup my ATT online registration... LOL

Hope this makes sense, and thanks again!

I am on a family plan, so even if this goes through I am definitely having the ebay guy do the girlfriends.

Interesting observation. Got to try this out.

Unlimitedsway.

Unlimitedsway got me my unlimited data back. He took the time to walk me through what i needed to do and it worked great. I very highly recommend him if you don't what to try doing it by yourself. :)

Thank you everyone for this thread and forum, thank you unlimitedsway for helping so many people get their unl data plan back and new ones.

I once had unlimited but was dumb enough to remove it, thinking that saving an additional $360/year was beneficial in exchange for a 2GB limited data plan. I was so wrong and thanks to this great community I got my unl data plan back. :)

unlimitedsway, I noticed you have a 716 area code. That happens to be where I live also. I'm thinking about joining AT&T, if I do so and you are still living in the area, could we possibly meet and get this all taken care of?

I can vouch for Unlimitedsway, he did both the lines on my and it was very easy. I think for those who doesn't already have an iPhone 2G should consider the cost, time and aggravation. Just a thought if anyone is interested. Thank you.

Thank you smokeinggta for the positive feedback!!
I am glad that i was able to help you:)

Youre welcome chestvrg....im glad that you were able to get your unlimited plan back!! I actually did the same thing as you did. Which was save the money from pay $30 a month...well($60) me & my wife's. We had some palm centros...wasnt using them at all. Then at&t quit offering it, so i couldnt get back on it right off when we got the samsung infuses just a few months ago. Had to get back on it then:)

& drkyn...im actually not in the area...i just have that 716 area code. But i can still help you whenever we you are ready. Just like all of my macrumor buddies, and subscribers, & daily readers. Just text me when youre ready and tell me its you when you do!!

& thanks tran691...thank you to all! Im glad that i can help everyone out. I wanna help as many people as i can to get this back, as easily as possible. & i also go the extra mile to make sure youre taken care of! Text me anytime. It may take me lil while to respond, but i will get to you!!

Everyone have a great weekend!

i currently have a blackberry torch. which sucks so hard. i'm upgrading to an iphone 4 or 4s on dec 1st. cant freaking wait. how do i transfer all of my data from my torch sim to my iphone sim? i plan on buying an iphone 2g so i can get my unlimited data back. i lost it last year when i took my att account out of my girlfriends name. long story.
im still confused about the sim issue and upgrade issue, so forgive me for being stupid. if i do the 2g thing and get the unlimited data plan, will i be able to upgrade to the 4 or 4s and keep the unlimited data?
can i have the att people put my address book and text mesages onto the new sim card without activiating it? i don't want to lose my address book. thanks.

I have 4 iPhone 4s on Sprint wanting AT&T

I have 4 iPhone 4s on Sprint from launch day I'm so screwed outside my 14-30 days and the reception and data SUCK....iv been with sprint for over 10 years I want to go to at&t, is there anything i can do to get these existing phones switched out to att iPhones?

Also what is the best way to get 3 of my 4 iPhones on the unlimited? does this mean I would need 3 MORE new sim cards for the 2g phone or i can use one? cause never having used GSM I'm not familiar with the concept!!! Easiest way for me to get unlimited on 3 of my 4 new iPhone 4s presumably after they are already activated!!

if I bring my own phone to att would they charge activation per line?

Also is it the 20$ unlimited or $30? and will the 2g auto transfer to the 3g once i put the sim in the 4s?

Is it possible to have the big sim to go in the 2g and than use a new micro sim to put in the 4s? or does it have to be the same sim?

By the way I use a macbook air so hopefully won't have activation issues
Thanks

I'm another satisfied customer. unlimitedsway helped me get unlimited data today on my sister's new iPhone 4S. Before that she had a dumb phone.

My case was a little more complicated because I'm not in the same state as my sister. But he was very patient in walking me through the process. The $35 hardly seems like enough to cover his time and effort, so I'm guessing part of this is just that he wants to be helpful. I'm *very* relieved my sister was able to get unlimited before AT&T closes the loophole!

Yeah he's a great guy. I feel bad because I only paid him $25. He had an incredible amount of patience with all my stupid questions lol. I even told him he should charge at least $50. He's a great guy and very trust worthy. Hopefully he'll get more business before AT&T does do away with this legitimate loophole.

hey self!!

Thanks for those nice words and acknowledgement! I am very glad that i was able to get your sister all taken care of! & Yes i am really trying to help as many people as i can! They are starting to try to close the loophole up, but i am still knowledgeable of a way around it:) I hope that you all enjoy your unlimited data, & also that everyone has a very safe and Happy Thanksgiving!:)

MattMJB0188:

Thanks Matt & i dont mind you alls questions at all!!

Ooops there goes another text...unlimited data seeker...gotta go! Everyone have a good night:)

ive been rocking my unlimited data since july... with a pay per month rate of 40.21 LOL att still thinks im using an iphone 2g.... im using this to even our how much they have robbed me.

this is what i learned from a friend that works at ATT. he said they are starting to catch on to this loophole and if you have a iphone 4 imei on yoru account it will not activate on itunes. What you need to do is call ATT have to to update your phone to a dummy phone imei on your account then get the iphone 2g and do the activation process. your account will activate then through itunes. After that take the sim and pop in your 4/4s and have unlimited data.

originally i couldn't do it on my account either but i called ATT had them updated my account with a iphone 2g imei then when i did it again with a fresh sim itunes activated the new sim with the 2 g plan. It's one extra step to do. Just say you lost your phone and you need to use a regular phone until you get a replacement.

I just did the trick a few hours ago and my features online went from (have an iphone 4s):

2GB data + unlimited text for $20 a month

to

iPhone Data Plan unlimited + 200 Text for $20 a month.

I tried to add Unlimited Messaging for $20 more a month but I keep getting an error saying the 2 plans conflict with each other. Thats the only option for unlimited text messaging. Any ideas how I can add unlimited text messaging or at least more than 200? Is my only option choosing $30 unlimited data + $20 unlimited text for $50? that seems kinda steep but dont know what other plans people have for this..... thanks everyone.

What phone is active on your account at this moment, the 4s or the original? What text options show up as far as available plans texting wise on OLAM? I personally have the unlimited data and 1500 texts for 45 total. The price of your data is going to be 30 for unlimited so the price isn't steep as texting prices haven't changed, just ten extra bucks for the unlimited data. Where are you in the process and hopefully may be able to further clarify things for you a bit.
Also, if you've switched back to the 4s already has your account and data plan already been changed to reflect the $30 unlimited plan or is it still showing the $20 unlimited plan. If its still on the original iPhone data plan which I'm suspecting it may be than it may not allow you to put the unlimited text back until the data plan gets switched over, either because the data+200 texts would be a redundancy or possibly because of the MMS issue (but i doubt it).

The iphone 4s is listed on my account right now - but i told the ATT rep on the phone its an iphone 2g and i gave them the imei for one.

only text options that show up to choose are unlimited for $20. I currently have the iphone data unlimited + 200 text for $20 chosen on the account and nothing else regarding data / text selected.

thanks for the help.

Got your PM. It won't let you just select the $30 unlimited plan in OLAM, you either have to call and have a manager override and put it on your account, or simply wait with the sim in your 4s for a few days and eventually it will automatically make the switch for you, at which time you can just add the unlimited texts plan again. On the website or on the ATT iPhone account app does it show a 1500 txt option or no. Also were you planning on calling to have them switch your data plan or just letting the system sweep take care of it for you, or are you just realizing that you couldn't just do it from your account page on the website.
