Actually we have 2 Inspires and 1 Atrix and 1 iPhone 4 which I use. I took one of the Inspires for a week and don't like android. I still love my iPhone. Now the Atrix I like better than the Inspire. The Inspire is a brick but the Atrix is a perfect size with a 4inch screen, almost same size device as iPhone 4. But I still am not a fan of android.

Thanks for that. I like my iphone too. But, I think he is set on the Inspire. He has never had a smartphone so this will be his first.

I got service right away and it showed on my line right away.Did you put a sim in when hooked up to iTunes?
Go to your online account related to the line you put 2G data see if it says $20 iPhone data or something like that.
Wait until you get a device to attempt to get data put on.
Thanks for all your help. The $20 data plan was showing up but the phone kept showing 'no service'. I had to call ATT and the CS rep was very nice. She had me remove the sim card and verified the # of the card. After I put the sim back in everything was good to go.

Great wait until you get a device. In fact call a corporate store near you. Tell them you have an iPhone 2G and you want to get an Inspire or whatever....
Play dumb. Say you have a $20 data plan what are my options. Don't say switch me to an unltd plan. Play it naive.
The store we go to is a corporate store. The guy we deal with knows about the workaround so we should be good.
Don't want him to wait too long.

Just did the whole Itunes activation process. Kept saying "waiting for acitvation" Called ATT, on the phone for 45 minutes got them to activate the phone and data pack. My Online account manager shows "Iphone data plan + 200 text"
Can I now go into my local ATT store and connect my Iphone 4?
Or do I use my simcard cutter and cut the simcard and pop it into my iphone 4?
My online account also says ''UD1536: Due to a recent data/messaging feature change, your included in plan usage may not be accurately displayed at this time. ''

Just use the sim cutter and put it in the iPhone 4, no need to go to the At&t store.
GOT UNLIMITED DATA! Took some patience and help from "Niketalk" Thanks.
Ended up going to the store with my IP4, and just told them to activate it with a new microsim. Got my text message on the way home that they switched my data plan.

Steps for newbies like myself a week ago. But finally got Unlimited data today, and I just joined ATT in November 2010, way after they ended the unlimited data. This was the way I got it all taken care of. good luck only for help, Im not saying this is the only way to do it.
Things Needed
Itunes newest version
Iphone 2G
New unactivated Sim card (corporate store will give you it for free)
A lot of Patience
I first restored the iphone 2g via itunes. I then plugged the IP2 into itunes and ran the activation. choose existing account, add all your info. Added the $20 data + 200 text plan.
Phone will then say waiting for activation forever, and you will get some BS emails from Apple about activation. I then called ATT and told them Im activating a IP2 and need to be on the $20 unlimited data which is the "Only" data plan available. Tell them you have been to the store and tried activating on itunes, but it wont work. They need there supervisor to override it and due it. At this point you will need to give them the IMEI and sim card # so that the phone will activate and show up on your Online Account Manager.
That was the longest part of the setup. Once it goes through and shows on your online account. I then took my Iphone 4 into the store and said I want to hook up this iphone. She put a microsim in it and activated it. As I left the store I got the email and text message that said "we have switched you to the correct plan with your smartphone".
I went home and saw on my online account I had the Iphone data plan available, but I was still on Iphone data plan + 200 Text. I tried to switch it online, but got the error F931. It was because ATT still had my IMEI # from the Iphone 2. I called in and told the guy I need to switch to the Iphone data plan for $30 and be grandfathered in and he did the switch.
Hope this helped. I know others seemed to have easier ways of going about it but wanted to give my two cents in case anyone had similar issues to me.

The Easier Way
Things Needed:
iPhone 2g
iPhone 3g, 3gs, 4
Brand new unactivated sim card
1. Restore iPhone 2g in iTunes and set up as new
2. Put unactivated sim card into iPhone 2g
3. iTunes will ask for your information and what line to activate the iPhone 2g on.
4. Once that is done, the iPhone will say "Waiting for Activation". This can last from a few minutes to a few hours. Be patient.
5a. Once the iPhone 2g is activated, take the sim card out of the iPhone 2g and place it in the phone you want Unlimited data on. (If using an iPhone 4, skip to step 5b)
5b. iPhone 4s use a micro sim instead of a normal sim card, so you need to either use a sim cutter or scissors to cut your normal sim into a micro sim.
Here's a video on how to do it with scissors and sim cutters can be found on eBay.
6. You should receive two texts informing you that you have been put on the correct data plan. (Again, this can take a few hours)
7. You now have Unlimited Data!!!

are you a new AT&T customer?
If not then pick existing customer then enter the phone # associated with.
yes I'm a new AT&T customer...
edit: duh *head slap* I thought I could activate the iphone 2g with just data ...
but guess not... I broke down the plan and I think it's right...

$20.00 - unlimited data
=59.99
as of today, unlimited data is NOT available for iphone 2g. I just tried and I was not able to get it. It's at the tiered plans.
