So it seems like it's kind of a crapshoot whether or not you can keep your $20 unlimited data if you upgrade? My girlfriend bought a 2g iPhone off eBay a few months ago when her 3GS broke, they grandfathered her into $20 unlimited (which we didn't even know was the deal) and now she's going to get a white iPhone 4. Is she going to be forced to choose between ATT's $15 and $25 plans?

At least that's the gist I got from skimming the thread - sorry if we landed on an answer for that.

HOLY ****ING ***** THIS WORKED!!!

Thank you drummr, you are the man. End of story :D

Unlimited data... wow

Congrats :)

Question... Given the choices:

  • Unlimited data
  • Unlimited sex
  • Unlimited McRibs (not sure this option is still available)
... I'm guessing you'd opt for the UL data? :p

Haha no problem, here to help. If anyone tries this after tomorrow (April 30th) let me know, there is a rumor they may be closing the loophole that day.

LoL :D

Well, given the choices above I would have to go with unlimited data***

***This decesion excludes an offer of unlimited sex with Megan Fox (of course)

anyone know a loophole that works for iPads?

Not a direct loophole, but IF you have an iPhone with unlimited data, jailbreak it (easy as cake with e.g. redsn0w, even on the 4.3.2. iOS and it's very stable) and purchase TetherMe from Cydia for $4.99 and use the iPhone's unltd data to your iPad.

Again, IF you have an iPhone then I presume you always carry it with you so the internet connection is always with you, so to speak.

This eliminates the extra $130 I'd have to cough up for the 3G iPad and it's unltd data :) At least that's what I'll do when I get an iPad!

Not a direct loophole, but still an effective workaround. Not to mention you can connect your laptop to it ;)

Is this loophole still active?
Got a white iPhone 4 and tried this with the sim that came with it.
Got to the data plan select screen, chose the unlimited plan, but still no change to my data plan. Still shows the 2gb data on my account.

Do I absolutely need a new sim? I'm going to get a new one today just in case.
Also could the problem be I didn't leave the sim in the iPhone 2g Long enough?
I removed it pretty much right after activation.

Thanks for any feedback!!!

When it did this, i only had the new SIM (the one that came with my iphone 4) in the iphone 2g for a few minutes. Then swapped back to the 4. It was successful without any calls to CS or anything.

Dangit, hope this doesn't mean that the loophole is fixed...

keep us informed. i'm highly interested in doing this next week and need to know if the loophole has been closed

Also, would you like to sell your iphone 2g once you're done? :)

Yes keep us informed. I want to try it in a few weeks. Trying to find a I Phone 2. Have a friend has one laying back but type person that doesn't like to share there stuff. Working on them though

First post.

I tried this yesterday following drummr's instructions. Everything went as described. Received the "AT&T is now processing your activation" email then got stuck at "Waiting for activation, this may take some time". After about 12 hours, I gave up and called CS. They activated the line but gave me some excuse that they could not put me on unlimited data saying it was due to I was grandfathered to the 1100 family plan.

Guess I'll try again when I get a fresh sim.

Didn't want to open a new thread so I wanted to ask here.

The date when AT&T was SUPPOSEDLY going to fix the loophole was April 30th. Right around then AT&T started really coming down on people tethering without the tethering plan and it's assumed that they are doing this to force people off of their unlimited plans.

Coincidence or on purpose?

Anyone know if this is still working? Anyone have a IPhone2 for sale cheap? Everyone I know had them but gave them away or something. Dont want to pay $150 on ebay for a phone I will not use and then find out the loophole is closed

It still works. I tried again last night but this time with a 3G sim. Got the text message moving me to the $30 unlimited data plan the following morning.

Have you looked on craigslist locally? That's where I got mine and I paid $90 for it. When I was done I sold it on eBay for $140. You could also get a beat up one on eBay for around $60.

Thanks for the update. I guess i'll be heading into an apple or att store before the day is up to get an iphone. :)

was customer service rather cooperative? any tips, tricks, or advice is much appreciated~

Edit: Oh yes i have a general question for anyone who can answer it. Without a doubt i'll probably be getting an unused brand spanking new micro sim for the iphone 4. Is it difficult to get it to work with the iphone 2g?
