Yea, but if that is the case, im sure they will supply them with a wired set. Or they likely would not cost but $5. I know this will still cause some to grumble... but I really prefer to see technology advance, as opposed to staying the same to not upset a few people.

Odd. Never fall out for either of us.

They’ve never provided earbuds before. And if they provide an adapter, many of us who travel will need separate earphones and or adapters for our iPhone, Mac, and iPad. It’s lunacy.

Excuse me for my ignorance, but who is this CoinCoin and why is he/she so important?

Yawn. Your arguments are dated thin as any good Pro does use and has used adapters from the beginning of electronic audio time

I actually do come from the beginning of electronic audio time, & you are only partially correct, Sir.
Adapters are normally only required when needing to connect a device with an input or output that it does not regularly have to deal with (I quote "turn-arounds" or "Unbalanced to balanced" as examples)
Output to a regular pair of headphones by an audio device capable of output falls outside those parameters.

I would argue that Bluetooth is better in the areas that matter to Apple, and Apple will likely be able to engineer away the pain points of using wireless headphones.

The problem with that is its Apple. They'll engineer a way to make it painless only if you use their headphones on their device. I'm not going to buy a pair of headphones just to use on an iOS device. If Im going to plunk down the money for a set of decent headphones, I want that painless experience regardless if I'm using my headphones with an iPad Pro or my Windows PC.

I am actually thinking of designing a hair-transplant technique that places a dark square of hair between the eyebrows & extends down to the base of the nose. I will call it "The Notch". People will complain about it, & then queue up in their millions to get one. ;)

Not quite the same but I think Samsung already proactively copied your idea with the guy in the Apple spoof commercials...

Love or hate Samsung: I thought that little poke at us Apple people was FUNNNNNNNNNNNN-ny!

I wish the would make a version of iPad with no camera. I've never used it on iPad. Also prefer no hump.
I agree, for one big reason
Ah, the joy of watching people with Tablets at Music Concerts. Hold them over their head, Film or stream the Whole thing (I mean, who can go to sleep at night without their Facepalm account having more likes than the night before?). People cannot see? Who cares? Look at my mighty stream!!
Of course, we are nearly at the point where "phablets rule the Earth"

(The Film Idiocracy was supposed to be set in a time centuries in the future, but here we are, folks!)

Yep...
Just a little bit lower...
But not too low..

Black oblong hair pieces can lead to World Wars if placed incorrectly!

All the while being pushed closer to The Switch. Just in the opposite direction to Steve’s vision. No headphone jack. Just give me one GOOD reason. .02mm is NOT a reason.

If the dimension is going to be smaller and thinner while maintaining the same screen size, how are you going to do that without sacrificing battery life?

Apple’s hardware jumped the shark a while ago, so no one should be surprised. If true, it just means I won’t buy one, and I’ll tell anyone who asks not to buy one.

I’m glad for those who like or use AirPods. But from the comments and likes I am seeing here the majority are not lovers of these nasty sounding little things. Count me in that group. What is so wrong with trying to keep more people happy if it does not mess up the basic product. I like my wired cans for many reasons most important being they sound good. Convenience be damned. I want good sound and a comfortable experience. I get it if Apple does not care about me and the many like me. I get it if the Apple lovers think they know what is best for the rest of us. It’s called choice, and acceptance. But mr cook...my next choice will be to switch to a company and system that while less elegant is way more inclusive. And will allow me to work the way I want to. Not the way Jonny I need thin Ives sees my future.

All iPAD versions last the same 10 hours (of video playback - this varies depending of your settings and what you are using for), from the 1st (released in 2010) to the last one. This is something that NEVER CHANGED in almost a decade.

And I don't think it will no matter what is released, even the Galaxy Tab S4 had a similar result despite Samsung claiming it could last 16 hours.

This is the one of the things that would make me want a new iPAD, not cosmetic changes that aren't worth paying for the same device again. The current iPAD is more than enough to meet everyone's needs, unless you are talking about CPU/GPU power, but that's another matter. Sacrificing the headphone jack with the pathetic excuse of making it thinner and lighter won't convince anyone except fanboys.

It would of course be nice to keep a headphone jack, but if the trade off is for water and dust resistance, I could live without it. I almost always use AirPods for the iPad now anyway, and keep a Lightning adapter with my Bose earbuds. Water and dust resistance will allow the iPads to be used in a lot of work and play scenarios.

Samsung has had a better water and dust resistance rating than Apple for a few years now and they didn't need to jettison the headphone jack to get there.

Yeah, the pros need to change not hold everyone back becasue they can’t adapt. That’s the worse excuse. If you would have said something about charging and listening, that’s a real thing. But if it’s just about old habits and old tech? Nope.

If wireless technology were advanced enough to create reliably great sound quality over bluetooth you would have a point. But it isn't, so you don't.

haven't read all the way down yet... so probably someone already responded to you... but I'm curious why using the lightning headphone is not an option for you? They work exactly the same. I sometimes grab the lightning ones for iohone from my drawer by accident.. and they work no differently.

Lightning headphones cannot be used with any other device. The selection of headphones with Lightning is considerably more limited. If someone wants to carry one pair of headphones to use on the iPhone, iPad and Mac or PC, or anything else, there are no adapters made for Lightning headphones to 3.5mm or even USB-C. Maybe Apple will remedy this with the introduction of the new iPad, but I sort of doubt it.

Also, there’s no way to use two Lightning headphones at the same time to share a movie on an iPad, or listen to audio books or music with another person. There literally is no such adapter.

The only way to solve these problems is to use Apples lightning adapter and plug in a standard pair of headphones. An adapter must be purchased to use Lightning connections while charging the iPad, a common situation on long haul air flights, or just an evening watching movies or playing video games, working with audio video apps, or other processor intensive activities.

And as far as I know, there’s no lightning adapter to allow two Lightning devices to share the port at the same time, like an external Microphone pre-amp, and midi interface, etc. leaving no place to plug the Lightning headphones either ...

I just got airpods for the wife and me. I never would have believed how awesome they are. For one, I always got so tired of having to untangle the cords. And more importantly, we have three little kids, who constantly yank the cords, pulling them out of our ears. And the wife loves not having to hold/carry the phone around the house while listening to her talk shows. She sets it in middle of room. So cool.

AirPods are great, but they aren’t perfect for everything, especially on the iPad. For starters they are lower quality than uncompressed audio over a wire. Maybe not important for casual listening, but essential for professional audio work, or full fidelity movie watching, and higher quality headphones which can make the distinction.

AirPods have no low latency option. This means they can’t be used for gaming, or audio recording.

AirPods can’t be paired to the same source so you and your wife can watch the same movie on the iPad together, or listen to an audio book, or music simultaneously.

AirPods can be paired to other BT devices, but because of the low latency issue, will not be able to even watch movies in audio sync because Apple relies on their own hardware to maintain sync.

So if it is really a USB C port then at least we can use USB C headphones - and these will work across devices with USB C - so that’s a step up from lightning, however, we then have the whole thing with not being able to use your iphone’s bundled lightning EarPods with the iPad so you have to make the extra purchase either way

I don’t want to be one of the ‘in Steve’s day’ guys but really I think the apple of 2008 would have worked this out before starting to chop things out and making their lineup a mess of differing standards...

Hilarious that people in this thread are being so easily baited by an obvious troll. "$160 EarPods." Come on guys. Wake up.

Are you joking? Really? Kill that damn jack, with a digital connection, audio cardo, simply adapter you can everything. If you are a pro you already use an external device like iRIg

That's a bogus argument. All those external DACs burn batteries faster. I'd rather just have a working headphone jack and non-battery dependent headphones.

Next Macs may not have a headphone jack, then you can just use USB-C for 2/3 :) If I traveled with an iphone, Mac, and iPad I'd just use Airpods, incredibly convenient when switching between Apple devices. If I had some super high performance audiophile headphones for $1000+, i'd just have a couple little $9 dongles that somehow I'd be able to cart around in whatever I'm carrying both a laptop and iPad in.
