Y'know, I can buy their cock and bull about needing the internal space on an iPhone, but iPads are larger and are utilized in a significantly wider scope of scenarios, some of which uses the headphone jack to output audio without the need of toting additional dongles or adapters.

But whatever. This company is deep in their bubble and stopped caring about real-world usage long ago.

Yes, obviously Apple doesn't care about "real world usage." LOL. They are selling well over a quarter of a BILLION of these iOS devices to "real world people" EVERY YEAR who are voting with their dollars, but Apple doesn't know or care about what "real world" people want.

It's always amazing that people's anger over Apple not following what they think Apple should do makes them think Apple doesn't care what people want. How irrational would it be for a company to decide that their goal was to alienate and drive their customers away.

So for those who still use wired headphones, now you have to use a dongle or pay for a wireless headphones? IIRC, I thought Apple said they are being green? How is requiring to recharge a wireless headphone being green? A wired headphone would be green.

IMO, Apple want to do away with phone jacks in hoping customers would buy the AirPods just to make more money. If you want to pay more money for wireless, that's your choice to spend your money but there still people out there that still uses wired.

What’s wrong with making money??

No doubt. Idiotic. I make my living as a video professional, and daily plug my Sony MDR V6 headphones into my iPad checking levels. Why those particular headphones? They are largely the industry standard, and a couple Audio Technicas and Sennheisers many pros use. While I use AirPods CONSTANTLY, they are not what I use for WORK, Apple.

Assuming this rumor is accurate, you can relax. Here's the two second fix. (While I have nice wireless headphones that make it hard to ever go back to wired headphones, I have very high quality "legacy" headphones that I occasionally use.) Here's my secret: I took two seconds to add the free adapter Apple gave me to the 3.5mm plug and left it on. I then plug in my headphones as before. Life is still good.

Samsung has had a better water and dust resistance rating than Apple for a few years now and they didn't need to jettison the headphone jack to get there.

If wireless technology were advanced enough to create reliably great sound quality over bluetooth you would have a point. But it isn't, so you don't.
Nonsense false argument. You can still plug in headphones into the iPhone.

What I would like to know is apple’s rationale. They must have thought this through. (And not to “annoy” customers)

The same reason why they decided mag-safe was suddenly not necessary for any of the laptops going forward: they're nickel and dime-ing on parts.

Most “video professionals” could probably afford $9 apiece to snap a lightning plug on their cans, leave them there, & literally never give it even a single moment of further thought...
Also, they’d be INCREDIBLY familiar & comfortable with dongles/adapters; as I’m pretty sure that industry is responsible for the bulk of those, for like the last 4 decades or so.
I have to assume that you are either grossly misrepresenting your profession, or digging REALLY deep to find something to be irritated about- that has an incredibly simple & obvious solution.

Why on earth should they have to do that? What is to be gained by that?

Good. No one uses headphones on an ipad anyway. If you want to use headphones u should just buy the $160 AirPods.

edit: Just because you think you need wired headphones on an ipad doesn't mean you're right. if Apple is removing the headphone jack it's because you don't need a headphone jack.

Bow down to the all knowing Apple. They have shown time and time again that they have no idea what their customers want, they just shove out whatever they decide is right and charge three times what it should. But then people just lap it up and shell out their money.

Apple no longer includes the headphone dongle with any of their devices.

Well for me the one piece of the puzzle we don't know yet. Will the new iPad support charging and listening to music at the same time on the usb-c port? If not, I won't be buying a new iPad. It's a PITA to have to buy an adapter to do something every iPad (and most devices) have always been able to do, but I like having native usb-c with fast charging, the larger screen and smaller form factor, but on long haul flights, I need the ability to charge and listen at the same time, so we'll see

They’ve never provided earbuds before. And if they provide an adapter, many of us who travel will need separate earphones and or adapters for our iPhone, Mac, and iPad. It’s lunacy.

Whoa, slow down. First, remember that every single prediction of doom that has been thrown around about the legacy 3.5 mm plug has fallen flat and over a half a billion people have embraced the elimination of the port as evidenced both by their purchases and by their extraordinarily high satisfaction ratings of the products without the port.

Second, I am a very frequent traveler. If you are using wired headphones while you travel, statistics show you are in the distinct minority. Most people who spend any real amount of time traveling have realized the wonderful world of not getting tangled with wires at airports, restaurants, and, of course, on airplanes. But, if you are still using wired headphones, you are confused if you think you need separate adapters for your iPhone and MacBook. Just take the two seconds to put the free adaptor Apple gave you to use on your legacy wired set- Voila! You can use those on either your iPhone or MacBook or current iPad.

So, no you won't need three separate adapters under any scenario.

curious how the smaller model compares to a latest ipad mini in total size and weight. If it isn't too much bigger or heavier it might find me upgrading, especially if it has usb-c port/charging.

It is. I'm coming from a mini and it actually is one of my concerns. They will have the same dimensions as the current iPad Pros. Just go to any Apple store or retailer. They're significantly bigger.

There’s real promise in the new SmartConnector rumored on the back of the iPad. This could well support a physical connection for basic functions such as charging, audio, and even usb 2.0, not just keyboards. That would solve a lot of problems. Wouldn’t replace the need for a dongle, but a dongle in of itself is not a problem so long as its use isn’t at the expense of other needs, like simultaneous charging, and data.

Won’t the bezels be too small to house a headphone jack? I would hate to see a notch just to accommodate a headphone jack.

No. The headphone jack fits behind the screen, just like it does on dozens of non-Apple devices. You don't need a bezel for a headphone jack.

You can't force the issue if you still offer the port. that is the basic essence of getting rid of it. Like the optical drives back in the day.

It doesn't hurt when you have wireless headphones you sell at a huge margin.

The next step is no ports at all. Time to force universal wireless charging. No one will be inconveniences by that.

It isn’t necessarily only about device thickness.

How does Apple put a 12mm deep headphone jack in a device with 6mm or 9 mm bezel?

The same way that Samsung a 12mm deep headphone jack in the S9 with a much smaller than 12mm bezel. Are you just making stuff up?

I'm thinking the same. The 12.9" felt way too big, but this might shrink it to something I'm comfortable with and that's a bit better for note taking...

Did I miss anything? I thought the dimensions were the same and screens would become bigger.

if you're using a $1k pair of headphones while working out everyday, you're doing it wrong.

Who uses their iPad while they work out?
[doublepost=1539455041][/doublepost]
The jack that the headphone plugs into is a certain height, width and depth behind that hole. Is there room for it, once the display comes so close to the device edge?

The iPhone 6S and iPads until now have had sufficiently large areas to house the jack without running into the display. That may no longer be the case, once you shrink the bezels.

Have you ever used (or seen) a non-Apple device? This isn't an issue at all.

My iPad Pro still runs great but I am happy that there is a model coming that I would like to replace it for in case it stopped working. No headphones I don't like but I care most about the weight. Reduction is great

Ah profits first, customers second. I thought I was musing the rational was NOT to annoy customers, but profits first meets that criteria.

I use wireless headphones, here's the thing, they run on batteries, if I forgot to charge them, I would like the option to just plug and play. Guess Apple expects everyone to be well organized and never forget to charge their gadgets.

More people will be mad about the lack of a headphone jack than the number of people who would have used the jack if it were included.

Who DOESN'T use a headphone jack? I use the headphone jack on my phone on a regular basis. I used to use it on a daily basis, but now I only listen to stuff on my phone on a weekly basis. Don't you think people with iPad Pros might use them on flights? Don't you think they might use the headphone jack?

A headphone plug is 3.5mm in diameter, and we are supposed to believe that reducing the thickness of the iPad from 6.1mm to 5.9mm (0.2mm) means that the headphone jack won't fit? Sounds like a lack of innovation from Apple. They can reduce the thickness of an iPad by 0.2mm, but they can't reduce the thickness of the jack by 0.2mm (again, the plug is way thinner than 5.9mm). In any case, I'd rather have a 6.1mm thick iPad with a headphone jack than a 5.9mm iPad without one.

nope, 100% disagree. it's no different than losing the HDMI port/displayport/SD card reader/dedicated charging port on the MacBook. I use them everyday, but still think Apple made the right decision in removing those ports.

Do you have an explanation as to why it was the right decision, or should we just take your word for it?

I don't care about shaving .02mm off the thickness, I'd rather have a battery that's .02 mm thicker

What if Apple's proprietary software/hardware is so good that you can have both? I don't think people realize how complex batteries are. Let alone Apple's IOS batteries

I want them to get rid of it if only for consistency's sake. You can love or hate an I/o configuration, but the fact that they're different on every apple product is ****ing infuriating. Lighting headphones for 1, AirPods for another, 3.5" for for the third.

Either keep or get rid of the headphone jack. But don't diverge the I/O between devices.
