Sure, half a billion people have accepted the elimination of the port, but how many sales haven't occurred because the port doesn't exist? We'll never know, but I personally have reduced my purchases of Apple devices because of this. So there's at least a few. Also, no one has asked me about my satisfaction with Apple devices. I'm skeptical about the numbers that come out. And even if they are actually that good, most people probably have to convince themselves they love the device because they just spent a huge amount of money on it. This is a well-known psychological phenomenon, as I understand it.

Anyway, tangled cords aren't an issue. Just tie the bundled cord in a knot and you are good to go.

"Tangled cords aren't an issue." You just lost everybody with that comment. It's clear you haven't tried wireless or you wouldn't make that comment. I'd just encourage you to try a nice wireless headset, sales show most people have gone wireless who purchase headphones.

You're skeptical of the satisfaction polls because you are only focused on your situation. Remember that most people just use the included earbuds, so they could care less what's at the end of the cord when they plug it in. The people who do have some sort of legacy set they want to use, just took the two seconds to plug the free adapter onto the end and never thought about it again. The large number of people who have switched to wireless, never gave it a thought. So, yes are there a tiny number of people who haven't switched to wireless, or who use something other than the included earbuds, or who didn't simply put on the free adapter and never think about it again? Sure, but that tiny number is so small it isn't even measurable when compared to the probably a billion people who fit in one the first three categories.

I’m curious about that new connector myself. I always thought the current smart connector should have been designed with more functionality in mind (charging, high bandwidth data, video).

Right, I’m sure as you get into that kind of audio equipment, the iPad becomes frustrating or impossible to use. I’m sure Apple knows it’s not (and probably never will be) practical for many types of professions. They probably just can’t outright say it because it would damage the brand.

It’s even more perplexing when they produce commercials depicting a child typing on a keyboard attached to an iPad, and when her mother asks ‘what you doing on your computer’ the child responds, “what’s a computer?”

Belkin offers a clunky dongle that splits to two lightning ports. Does that not work with two lightning headphones simultaneously?

No it does not. Either port can be used to charge or listen, but both can’t be used for the same purpose at the same time. When Apple removed the headphone jack, they did not provide a way to share audio via Bluetooth or Lightning, which is a pretty common bing, especially for use with the iPad.

Some people are saying that they will be looking at other tablets, with headphone jack.

So my best bet would be an iPad Pro 2017.

Apple can show the world how "brave" it is by including/retaining the headphone jack in the 2018 iPad Pro and the next iPhone - that sort of leadership is what we need from the wealthy fruit corporation.

LOL. You're comment shows you must not have flown on any major airline for some time. All of them have adopted wireless on board as an option for their distribution as it is much cheaper than installing and maintaining seat back screens, especially as the vast, vast majority of people are bringing their own, much better quality screen with them. They also know that it is vastly easier to get someone to purchase an item, like a premium movie, on their own device than to try and get them to use a card on one of the old seat back screen sets. They all have apps that you download and then can stream their free and paid movies and TV right to any device you have. It's what happens with free enterprise; they have to offer it to be competitive, (plus they want to take your mind off your uncomfortably cramped seating:)).

If you do start flying again, check it out and welcome to the post wired world of flying where you don't need to be plugged into your arm rest or seat back.
There are different airlines and different entertainment systems. Wired phones will work everywhere. In many cases the airlines give out the media devices. If you are not carrying your own tablet, wired phones is the best bet. In any case, the tablet with 3.5 jack is everything jack-less tablet is and then some. When I see someone with airpods in the airplane I just wanna cry.

I don't mind no headphone jack. But no Lighting port connector means I can't use my Lightning port headphones.
There’ll likely be an adapter if that happens. Or not. There’s not one for the Mac — there is currently no way to use a pair of Lightning headphones on any other device, including the Mac. Here’s hoping Apple solves his problem if they remove the headphone jack from the iPad which will actually affect customers directly.

They gave away over a half a billion, who doesn't have one though, or who can't buy one for $9? It's good for the environment that Apple stopped giving them away as the studies show that the vast majority of people just use the included earbuds, and of those who don't, the vast majority have switched to wireless. Thus, putting hundreds of millions of unneeded adapters into consumers desk drawers or left in the boxes is wasteful.

An even better idea for the environment would be to not create devices that require the purchase of wasteful adapters or dongles that will be obsolete in a few years anyways.

I'll never understand why some people support technological change just for the sake of technological change, especially when the technological change is inferior to existing technology.

Yep. A lot of people confuse technological change with technological advance. It's important to remember that all technology is supposed to achieve a goal and generally improve the user experience in some way. If something is new, but isn't better at achieving the goal of the technology/improve the user experience, then it isn't better. The specific case of changing lightning to USB C so that there is a single standard across computers, phones, iPads, etc. is DEFINITELY an improvement. Providing the option of using wireless headphones (which was done years, and years ago) is an improvement. Removing the headphone jack is not.

I fly on a regular basis and that simply isn't true. Some airlines offer what you are talking about, but definitely not even close to all major ones I use.

American, United, Delta, Alaska, Southwest, every major airline offers it. I have apps for each of them for when I fly. Just Google it, and stop the fake news. Facts matter. Here's the top five major airlines to help you out.

This is going to be one of the best designed devices we’ve seen in a while. Pretty much the ultimate computer, kind of like the original vision Apple had for the future. An all screen device like this is going to be a great experience. Can’t wait to order.
Aple would better remove the bezels on Mac Books first. On the tablets, bezels are actually useful.

Especially when some claim that wireless is superior compared to 100 year old 3.5 jack tech apparently not understanding that 3.5 jack simply represents analog signal that exists in every headphones/speakers (often in worse quality through)

That is what you need. Not what I need. Couldn’t care less about the headphone jack.

But that is different for everybody.
I like the iPad and iPhones , apple watches, etc as thin , light and portable as possible, with good battery life. If that means no headphone jack, so be it. I go Bluetooth or with an adapter. But I can understand if other people have other priorities.
I am just the lucky one this time. Next time, someone else will get what they want, over the stuff that I want.

Exactly. And don't get me wrong, I have several pairs of wireless headphones and I love them. They are super convenient when travelling. But the sound quality on all of them is clearly inferior to wired cans and every pair I've owned (including some of the best on the market) have had connectivity issues from time to time. I love the iPad and am definitely buying the new model with or without the headphone jack (left my old one on a plane in August and have been dying without it). I don't think it will be a huge problem for me personally, since I rarely use my iPad as a listening device. But the arguments in favor of removing it make no sense at all. The only reasonable explanation is that it is better for Apple's bottom line. I have no objection to that, but let's stop with all these other silly excuses.

Hence, the one plug that charges and works for headphones. And you're right, as wireless is now the majority of sales, the 3.5 is becoming obsolete as witnessed by more and more phone companies removing it.

Here’s an alternate perspective of the seat back systems as a follow up to my other reply to you.

Of course, as I mentioned above, anyone relying on their own iPad for streaming content faces some substantial issues with the removal of the headphone jack. First they will need to buy a splitter so the iPad can be charged while the headphone jack is being used. Second, a person won’t be able to share the device with anyone else simultaneously, without using the Lightning headphone adapter. And all of that adds to the tangle of wires Apple told us they were trying to eliminate.

Apple sure taking it time for the next iPads. I would not be surprise it they delay the announcement it next year!

I agree that most people don't know how to manage their cords well. Again, with the simple step of knotting the cord, tangling is not an issue.

No, I am not only focused on my situation. Plenty of people on this forum alone would agree with me. Tons of people think Apple has been going in the wrong direction lately.

Also, my wife is regularly frustrated by the fact that she can't charge her phone and use headphones at the same time, so "just using the included earbuds" didn't solve the problem for her or many others like her. The adapter doesn't help with this either.

All of these specific discussions miss the main point. It would be incredibly easy for Apple to continue offering a headphone jack on their devices, and doing so would unquestionably be positive. Those that want to use wireless still can. Those that don't, aren't forced to if they want to charge at the same time. Other phone manufacturers do this, so don't tell me Apple can't.

....you just listed US airlines. You are aware that there are many, many major airlines outside the US, right?

Dude, give it a rest. We all know you have BT headphones. Cool. I also have BT headphones, but on long haul flights like 12 hours in the air, I don't have a single pair of BT headphones that can run non-stop or even close. I think everyone has heard your point (many times now), so why don't you allow other perspectives to have a voice on the subject?

No headphone jack on an iPad? You gotta be kidding me. The water resistance claim can’t be made here. Only a dumb*** takes iPads anywhere near water.

And what will Apple do when this design gets stale? Add bezels again? There really is nowhere else to go.

I fully supported the removal of the headphone jack from the iPhone. It’s an ultra portable device (or was prior to the XR and XS Max), needs to be sealed up as tightly as possible, makes no sense to attach a lot of wires to, and needs as much room as possible for internal innovation. For most, wireless is the optimal solution for such a device, and for those who want a cheaper alternative or higher quality, there’s an adapter and other options.

But the iPad is a different story. Apple has positioned this as a MacBook replacement, but removing key functionality that even the MacBook with one port retains, and offering only a kludge of solutions to replace it in those situations, affecting both the professional and average consumer in equal ways. And by all appearances was an unecessary step in its evolution.

Indeed if you can be good in wiremanagent, why can’ t people take care of an adapter?( i’ ll loose it , etc, etc)

Which other phone manufacturers? Samsung is ditching it next year, google has ditched it, OnePlus is ditching it.

And why are people so surprised right now, they could not see it coming, when the iPhone dropped it 2 years ago? Why are we having this discussion again and again?

Headphone jack is dead..... sorry, face it, and make another choice.

Haven’t you heard? They want everyone to buy AirPods. That’s her solution.

Sshhh! Do you want them to take away our MacBook jacks as well? Don’t give them any ideas!
