I remember paying 3x as much for Sony XBR Trinitron in the 90's so I can get square corners on my TV. Now we're paying extra to get the round corners back. Lol, we truly are in the "slashed jeans" era of computing...

I really want to buy an iPad Pro later this year, and I most likely will, but with these possibly new features, I'm seriously concerned Apple will once again use them as an excuse to jack up the prices considerably, like they did with iPhone X.

This is amazing, thanks for posting it. It's interesting to see the genesis of these UI conventions that have been around so long we forget they're there. Just looking up at the edge of my Safari window...

Now that the next iPad Pro are kind of late I’m hoping Apple will skip A11X and go straight to A12X. For an A11X to make sense Apple "must" launch new iPad Pros before the next iPhone with A12 – If they can make enough A12s...
Yes. They were almost 6 months behind at one point. At this point any new iPad Pro should be A12X minimum.

I don’t like ANOTHER impending resolution change though. squircle corners are a nice idea, but iPad pros are going to be worthless if Devs don’t keep up with the hardware changes. Does this mean the 10.5” model is a “one n done” model? Cause that’s going to cause development rebellion.

I’m not pleased about it as a user—seems like a stop gap model. But it’s such a great iPad.

Why do we need rounded corners on a tablet? If the case is square then rounded corners seems like poor design. I can understand on the iPhone the rounded corners because it is a small screen platform in a phone body that is intended to slip into a pocket or purse without snagging up on anything but for a tablet, especially a 10"+ pro tablet, rounded screen corners, "just because" is stupid, period.

I mean I used to think the hexagonal screens on Battleship Galactica was a stupid design choice, I didn't think it was a prophecy for what our screens are morphing into.

You should have put your last sentence first and just left it at that because I'm pretty sure every iphone & ipad in existence has rounded corners on the case/body, and thus we have bezels on all sides.

Visual and aesthetics standpoint; After having bought an iPX last christmas even phones like the iP8+ seemed like history in the making. The Galaxy S9 with its true edge display is really great too, probably the only phone I would possibly give up the iPX for.

I really don’t get why people are complaining about rounded corners. Seams quite obvious that if the bezel is significantly thinner, and the iPad has always had rounded corner, that the display needs to have rounded corners as well. You are getting more pixels so not an issue in my opinion.

This.First post that makes sense in the whole discussion.

Someone mentioned apps with full screen adds with tiny Xs in the corner.

Someone mentioned apps that have full-screen ads with tiny Xs in the corner. I have a couple of them. So if the developers aren’t quick to update the whole app could fail. Not Apple’s fault I know, but even major developers have been slow to update to different screen sizes/ratios.

Why would it make MORE sense on an iPhone than on an iPad? The larger screen on an iPad would make the rounded corners even more minimal.

And the IPad itself has rounded corners like the iPhone so it makes sense to carry that rounded language of the displays across the iOS devices. especially since the bezels will become more minimal on the iPad now like they are on the iPhone X and upcoming iPhones.

I know Apple is a trillion dollar company now and all that, but I wish they'd invest in putting full MacOS on the iPad to replace the crippled IOS, and forget about these "rounded corner" nonsensical changes that some whiz kid designer thought up.

Apple is insanely successful, but hey, let’s ask them to stop doing what made them successful in the first place.

It is already August and no announcements about iPads. September is for iPhones. So that leaves late October for announcing iPads for release at end of October. If not this year, the 2019 February/March?

Cannot wait for an updated iPad Mini!

No. Please. Rounded corners, another form over function decision is terrible for photographers. There is no camera that rounds off the corners of the sensor, I don’t print photos with rounded corners, so when I’m editing an image on an iPad, I need to see the corners. Editing an image on an iPad with rounded corners would mean the image wouldn’t use the whole screen or I wouldn’t be able to see the corners on an image. Apple keeps trying to convince photographers that iPads are for more than consumption. This isn’t a good way of doing that.

It depends on the aspect ratio of the photo, doesn’t it? It would only go to the corners if the aspect ratio of your picture matches the display. Otherwise you’ll have letter boxing or pillar boxing that would keep the image out of the corners, in all likelihood.

By “whiz kid designer” you’re referring to Steve Jobs? Because he was the one who started the rounded rectangle trend at Apple and it’s become one of their signature design elements.

Also, just because you think iOS is “crippled” does not mean everyone else does. Different OSes for different jobs/people.
Sure but you missed the point:
It is the combination of an iPad positioned to be a Pro device and a stretched phone OS dthat was eemed ludicrous by the original poster - and I second that.

When there is nothing else to do we make rounded corner don’t be so square!!

Yes. The only thing I expect Apple to do though, is to increase the length of the iPad displays just like they did on the iPhones so the "safe" area on the new iPads are the same as the whole displays on the current iPads

Why do we need rounded corners on a tablet?

We don”t “need” them, but they are here:

1. To maintain a specific design language that makes iOS devices unique - they always had rounded corners, that was always their thing and now, the screen goes all the way to this corners, so the screen has rounded corners too.

2. Because they look ****ing cool.

Just give me a trackpad option please!

There will always be someone that asks for a trackpad with every iPad redesign and a touchscreen with every MacBook redesign, even if the discussion is about something completely different than input methods (and it usually is).

And for both, the answer will always be the same: not gonna happen.

Steve suddenly got more intense. "Rectangles with rounded corners are everywhere! Just look around this room!". And sure enough, there were lots of them, like the whiteboard and some of the desks and tables. Then he pointed out the window. "And look outside, there's even more, practically everywhere you look!". He even persuaded Bill to take a quick walk around the block with him, pointing out every rectangle with rounded corners that he could find.

When Steve and Bill passed a no-parking sign with rounded corners, it did the trick. "OK, I give up", Bill pleaded. "I'll see if it's as hard as I thought." He went back home to work on it.
