Using screen with rounded corners on a device where it does not make any sense is plain stupid.

Well, I understand the reason for the rounded corners on the screen. The device itself has rounded corners, and the smaller the bezels get (assuming the new iPad will have small uniform bezels), the closer the sharp screen corners get to the rounded device corners, which begins to not look good. So it’s either rounded screen corners, or sharp device corners, or keep the bezels thick at least partially.

Next iMac redesign will be near bezelless, and have round screen corners. Calling it!

My main problem is the ridiculous design of multi-tasking on a portrait-oriented iPad. The photo in the article makes it painfully obvious what a dumb design that was.

Back on topic here I think rounded corners will be fine on iPad. It either allows for smaller footprint of the overall device or a larger screen in the same sized device. Both of those are great if you ask me. Those dang bezels on my 12.9 need to go away! And rounded corners makes it more feasible.

Watching films feels silly with rounded corners, which is part of why I don’t like the design of the iPhone X. But that is a non-issue on iPad because the corners would be in the letterboxed area of the screen.

You don’t see logic too often on this site. Cheers.

This is your exact statement... "iPad sales have been in decline since 2014" ... this is completely false.

They are in decline. QoQ fluctuations do not make a trend.

So why did Apple use bezels on all previous iPad models? They are there so that one can hold the device. Did something change this year? Did human hands all of sudden got larger so that we can now hold the tablet the same way we hold the phones? I just checked my own hands - they are the same size as they were in 2010.

Also, while rounded case corners make sense for the phones (because of the way people hold the phones) it's not the case for the tablets. Square tablets would work just fine (rounded ones are slightly better but not at the expense of cutting the screen).

Why do we need rounded corners on a tablet? If the case is square then rounded corners seems like poor design. I can understand on the iPhone the rounded corners because it is a small screen platform in a phone body that is intended to slip into a pocket or purse without snagging up on anything but for a tablet, especially a 10"+ pro tablet, rounded screen corners, "just because" is stupid, period.

I mean I used to think the hexagonal screens on Battleship Galactica was a stupid design choice, I didn't think it was a prophecy for what our screens are morphing into.
I can't speak for everyone, but when I hold my iPad, I have my hands mainly on the lower half with the bottom corners held by my palms. The corners start digging into my palms and that starts to feel uncomfortable even after a few minutes, but I can't hold it by the sides because it starts to slip. Rounded corners have more surface area, and the new corners may be designed to have gentler curves, so holding it in the way I do would be much more comfortable.

It also looks interesting to me, and I doubt missing a couple of corner pixels will be the end of the world.

reminds me this;

I really liked the interface back then

That might give me some problems working with remote devices on the iPad. The remote displays are not rounded which might mean that some pixels at the corners are missing....

OMG iPads will resemble the 60’s television screens.
Let the sepia colors come in -with TrueTone they’ll be like never before
Duh

Rounded corners. Wow, a feature. Apple marketing department "I reckon rounding the corners should be worth at least $200"

(I have always been getting paper cuts when handling the sharp edges of the LCD screen) /s

Rounded corners = less pixels. Less pixels = less $$$. I can finally afford a new iPad Pro now! :)

Still a question as to whether Face ID will work in landscape orientation. If it doesn’t no new iPad for me.

Yeah, that would be weird if it didn’t. Most people use the ipad in landscape most of the time wether holding it or on the table with the smartkeyboard. So it wouln’t make sense if face ID didn’t work in landscape. Guess we’ll find out soon.

That home screen indicator line is distracting, on videos and now split view. Either have an option where the user can turn that indicator line on/off or have a learning mode where it eventually disappears when the user learns the new interactions of no physical home button. It is in poor design and taste to constantly have it staring the user in the face, I wonder if it causes screen burn-in on AMOLED devices.

Those rounded corners need to have a smaller radius, wasted screen real estate.

I don’t mind the rounded corners, like them on my X, but definitely agree with the indicator line. I doubt they would have it in a split screen scenario.

On a phone sized device the corners are usually cupped in one hand, the corners usually get covered naturally. I don’t know many people who can cup an iPad though, unless you have some giant hands :D

Maybe the rounded corners are not prominent, will wait and see.

I don’t cover mine, pretty prominent, but I like the look of them better. Just a preference I suppose. I think it’ll work well with an iPad.

Of course it does, sales are sales. Your data stops at the beginning of last year. I guess that means the last year of growth never happened? iPad sales have been increasing each of the last 5 quarters. It's pathetic that you negate facts simply because you don't like Apple. I never understood why people live on a site dedicated to a company or products they don't even like.

Maybe passionate, maybe trolling, don’t know. I like Apple products and use them, I will call them out if it could have been done differently better or whatever. Free speech and opinion and all, not really insulting, its all cool.

The illusion of an uninterrupted infinite display, that is the look Apple is going for.
