Funny thing: old CRT monitors had rounded corners by default and making them squared, whether it was the last CRT or the first LCD displays, was considered a high tech thing.
Yup. I remembered old TV ads showing how you gain more space on non-rounded corners vs the old CRT. Funny how things go full circle.

Maybe passionate, maybe trolling, don’t know. I like Apple products and use them, I will call them out if it could have been done differently better or whatever. Free speech and opinion and all, not really insulting, its all cool.

The illusion of an uninterrupted infinite display, that is the look Apple is going for.

For sure, I don’t mind differing opinions, but it would be like me frequenting a Samsung centric site to argue sales numbers for one of their products.

Agreed and yea, it is somewhat of an illusion, but it works well. Rounded corners and the screen stretching to all four corners makes for a different experience in my eyes.

Yeah, that would be weird if it didn’t. Most people use the ipad in landscape most of the time wether holding it or on the table with the smartkeyboard. So it wouln’t make sense if face ID didn’t work in landscape. Guess we’ll find out soon.
To me, the question is whether it will work in portrait!

If the sensor can’t be made to operate omnidirectionally, and if they’re only going to put TrueDepth sensors on one side, I hope they choose the long side.

I’d rather it work in landscape but not portrait, if it’s only going to work in one direction, rather than the other way around. Those with differing habits/use cases may disagree, though.

Rounded corners on an iPad will look dated and will taint design and video viewed through the device.

Bad idea. . . . no, REALLY BAD idea.

Apple's upcoming 2018 iPad Pro models may feature a display with rounded corners like the iPhone X according to an image asset for the new devices found by 9to5Mac's Guilherme Rambo in the most recent beta update.

The asset in question, which appears to be for new iPad Pro models, is used as a mask to create rounded corners of UI elements and it features the same rounded corners that we've seen in the iPhone X. The J3xx name suggests a 2018 iPad model and it's a reference that's been found in other parts of the iOS 12 code in relation to new iPad Pro models.

Rambo set up a modified device in the iOS Simulator to demonstrate that iOS 12 on an iPad can handle rounded corners, with a demonstrative image of what Split View multitasking might look like on a tablet with rounded corners.

Previous rumors have suggested Apple is planning a major design overhaul for the 2018 iPad Pros, doing away with the Home button, introducing slimmer bezels, and adopting a TrueDepth camera system for Face ID.

Given the similarities between the design described in rumors and the iPhone X, it makes sense that Apple would also introduce a rounded corner design in the iPad Pro. Current iPad Pro models do not use rounded corners for the display.

There's no word on when Apple plans to introduce its updated iPad Pro models, but the new tablets could perhaps come in September alongside new iPhones. Apple could also choose to introduce them at a separate iPad and Mac-focused event as it has done in past years.

If they are silver in the back and black in front I'm in. Apple colors, like the iMacs.

Rounded corners? Wow. Is it any surprise why Apple is a trillion dollar company now? I'd like to hear the naysayers spout that Apple R&D have been sitting on their laurels for years after this announcement. Get with it you squares And get .. er... corners. That are ... rounded. Is it? Yeah. Cos square corners are so last month. I mean, really? Square corners? In this day and age? Who still does that?

I really don’t get why people are complaining about rounded corners. Seams quite obvious that if the bezel is significantly thinner, and the iPad has always had rounded corner, that the display needs to have rounded corners as well. You are getting more pixels so not an issue in my opinion.

Check their post history. They complain about every Apple products but never actually get any.

Jony Ive is just sucking up to Dieter Rams again. Look at the Braun ET66 calculator -- it had a LCD display with rounded corners. Made no sense back then either.
If his Great Ivedom decides that ‘60 television bulbs are the future trend, it be so.
The herds of Kazillions will obey.

Despite previously not liking rounded corner design when I first experienced it on chinese software MIUI (which is the nicest UI design I've seen to date) back in 2012-2013, I adapted to it with my jailbroken iPhone 8, and I do feel like it gives a smoother and somewhat softer approach.

The more ease of use the better, considering all the things that can be micro-stressors when dealing with software. Part of the reason I dislike android so much. There's nothing technically wrong with it, it's just more annoying to use.

Rounded? Square? I couldn’t care less. Either is fine. I am just glad it looks like apple isn’t going to have a notch on the new ipad pros. That would have bothered me.
The existing ones are rounded already. The rounding just has an extremely small radius. Like... microscopic, which is the appropriate size as far as I’m concerned. All they’re doing is trying to crank every damned bit of screen area out of a given device footprint, (laying flat,) for a given size of bezel. Trouble is, I NEED at least a little bezel to hold the device! Getting rid of the bezel is just another reason for me to switch to something not made by Apple. (And don’t give me that “buy a case then” argument, because there’s no reason why I should have to just because they’ve irrationally decided bezels must die. By the way, tell me... what do they do after eliminating bezels altogether? Where do they go from there? Start wrapping the screen AROUND the edges? Then they’ll have to start making parts of the screen transparent so you can see the part of the screen hiding behind the other part of the screen, which would be ironic considering that they could have just stopped before hitting the edge of the screen in the first place but oh, no... couldn’t stop when it would make sense, that just wouldn’t be Apple.

Notice how the one thing Apple won’t do is lower prices so they’re at least near reasonable? That just wouldn’t be Apple.

Honestly, I have no idea why you're complaining about this.
iOS has had bezel touch rejection since the iPad mini was released. If holding the device were an issue, the current 10.5" iPad would be trouble to hold in portrait; it's not. Also, iPads are also often used on a keyboard or other stand on a table. Having more of the surface area that's actual screen is obviously beneficial there. If app developers choose, they can leave a little extra room at the sides if need be. But in other cases, say videos or photos, you'd want as much of the device as possible to be able to display content.

Why do we need rounded corners on a tablet? If the case is square then rounded corners seems like poor design. I can understand on the iPhone the rounded corners because it is a small screen platform in a phone body that is intended to slip into a pocket or purse without snagging up on anything but for a tablet, especially a 10"+ pro tablet, rounded screen corners, "just because" is stupid, period.

I mean I used to think the hexagonal screens on Battleship Galactica was a stupid design choice, I didn't think it was a prophecy for what our screens are morphing into.

People hold iPads with their hands, they were designed for that, and this is why.

I know Apple is a trillion dollar company now and all that, but I wish they'd invest in putting full MacOS on the iPad to replace the crippled IOS, and forget about these "rounded corner" nonsensical changes that some whiz kid designer thought up.

It’s just not something they will do, plus the experience just wouldn’t be the best. The issue with the Surface device is that while it may be a good computer it’s a bad tablet (according to a lot of people) and the iPad is a tablet first.

By “whiz kid designer” you’re referring to Steve Jobs? Because he was the one who started the rounded rectangle trend at Apple and it’s become one of their signature design elements.

Also, just because you think iOS is “crippled” does not mean everyone else does. Different OSes for different jobs/people.

I have a 10.5 IPP, and you bet the OS on it is crippled. This is an extraordinarily sophisticated, high powered device, yet I can't access system management controls in the same way as on MacOS. And it still presents itself as a mobile device to web applications, so I have to manually select desktop format to get to a page format that is much more appropriate for the 10.5. I grant you that many users may not care about these things. So if Apple changed them to reflect a full MacOS set of capabilities, it wouldn't affect them, yet it would give other users a better usage experience.

Not to hijack this all important rounded corner discussion, but some people think that Apple invests in superfluous things at the expense of features which would make using an IPP better.
