Awesome. Very excited for my new phoneless iPhone. If Canadian cellular providers weren't so terrible I'd love to own an iPhone someday, but we have some of the worst cellular service and prices in the world here. Going wifi only with a shiny new iPod Touch is a small price to pay to avoid doing business with them.

Wish List for IPod Nano

The Nano 5G was the best iPod Nano EVER!!!

The 6G was a HUGE step backwards (gone are: camera, videos, clickwheel, etc.)

Return to the 5G form factor, throw in the radio, and max it out to 32GB.

Do that and you have a best-seller.

Stay with "touch screen" and Nano will always just be a watered down Touch...

I want a nano with bluetooth. Given the accelero-pedometer feature already present that would make the perfect runner's iPod -- tiny, no cables, perfect sound + run distance + calorie tracking via Nike+.
To me, the next nano would need to get the full Nike+ receiver, instead of just using the built-in pedometer. There's more to Nike+ than just running and if you don't use the Nike+ sportskit, you're missing out on those features.

So I'd need Bluetooth and a Nike+ receiver before I'd call it a perfect companion for runners.

The next step would be for Nike/Apple to release a GPS dongle that you can clip to your shorts that would send your coordinates to the Nike+ receiver so that you can track your runs outdoors with the GPS and have the footpod work in conjunction.

I'd buy a nano/iWatch in a heartbeat. I've been waiting for a true smartwatch that can pair with my phone.

I love the idea of a smartwatch. Mr Cook, if you're looking to disrupt another market like you did with MP3 players and mobile phones, please do something with the humble old watch.

It's small (you guys are good at small electronics, right?), everyone wears one (well, not everyone - but you know what I mean), and so the market is huge.

A smartwatch that has built-in wifi to provide previews of email, messages, etc. and that can pass commands for Siri on to other Apple devices for processing would be very cool.

Let Google go for goggles. And let's see how long it takes Samsung to bring out their S watch.

Oh...wait - I guess they might get sued by Swatch if they tried that :p

RTP.

Moving the iPod touch to an aluminium unibody same as the iPhone means that they will be able to offer it in the same colour range as the shuffle and nano, they won't have to stick to black and white when they can colour the anodised layer.

That's what I'm waiting for. And I'll quickly cancel my Pebble order if it comes!

Is it possible to cancel? I've been debating doing so. This whole delay w/o any udpate is starting to wear on my patience.

You'd actually do that with BT (or BLE), not WiFi.

iGame, iPlay, or iFun?
iPod Game?
an iPod touch with controls built in.
Something the kiddies would really want...
App developers would lov it!

Would not be a selling feature with me. iTunes Match is a dud for anyone like me with a huge library -- I had to turn it off because I would get a 30-60 second delay every time I pressed play, even if the music I was playing was already downloaded to the device.

sounds like more was a miss with your device than anything. Though I'm running iOS6 to test some friend's apps out, match may just be more responsive than prior

iPod nano is a pain in the ass to use it with touch and sweat... physical buttons should return. I use it for running not like a fashion watch

They should really market the iPod classic as an external HD... That's what I used my 160GB for before I sold it... I'd say bring it up to 500GB. Format it so it can store large files. I'm in the market for a new, larger external HD for YouTube recording and whatnot. I'd love it to be a multi-use device.

i need a new kicking ass nano!

apple, please give us a completely new written version of iTunes that is fast, beautiful and world better than the one we have since...

When has Apple ever updated anything else including the iPod lineup at the same time they updated the iPhone? Seems a bit strange and unlikely.

Apple can't have failed to have seen how people are wearing Nanos, and they've seen how successful projects like Pebble and Metawatch have been on Kickstarter.

So ... here's my guess. The new iPad mini is going to bring about the demise of the iPod Touch. The new Nano is going back to a more traditional form factor and will replace it. The iPod Shuffle is going to become a watch, slightly smaller than the current Nano. Bluetooth 4.0 is going to make it all happen.

TL,DR: Pebble and Metawatch are about to be Sherlocked.

The drives used in those MP3 players aren't meant for frequent file access as is required for use as a normal hard drive. While they will work they will fail much sooner and are slower than similar sized 2.5" external drives. I'd go with a 2.5" external instead as there is less likelihood of dataloss and much faster file access then you'll see with an iPod.

Given years of declining iPod sales, I don't see them introducing a new line. If anything, I'd expect them to cut one (classic) or even two (shuffle) of the existing lines, leaving the nano as the portable/workout iPod and the touch as the high capacity/iOS iPod.

Sadly, I could see this happening. Frankly I love the Shuffles up until the current incarnation. I use that or my iPhone exclusively for music.

I wonder if Apple will update the iPod Classic with bigger storage, although seeing as Apple is focusing on iCloud, I doubt that they will

You only have to look as far as last year. iPhone and iPods were updated at the same event in October of last year.

They didn't discontinue because there is no iPod with that much storage.

I imagine this is the reason. Even if it is low selling it doesn't cost them much to produce I'd figure. Especially since it hasn't been refreshed since 2009. And for that much storage in an iPod the price is good.

Now as flash storage prices drop as size increases I could see the Classic being either revamped as a flash based iPod with lots of space or being phased out and an iPod Touch with a lot of memory becoming the next one.

However my concern is that with all the iTunes Match and iCloud and all that people won't want/need big storage capacity to carry around. I like having all my music on a physical drive. Even though I now use iCloud for my music I download it to have it offline on at least one drive. Downed internet means no iCloud access so having music local is a huge plus of the Classic.

Agree totally. With the physical buttons you can operate it easily without looking at it.
I still love my Nano (2 gen? - the squat version).
