I was hoping that this time we'd see refreshed hardware in the form of the casing, not the internals. It's been 3 years since the thin, tapered-edge iMacs were released and it'd be great to see an update that at least slims those bezels a little. I guess we would've seen some leaked parts or something if that was coming. I could live with spending all that money on an iMac if a couple of months later there was a slight CPU/GPU improvement in a new model but if I'd bought one and then one came out that looked better, I'd be upset. :)

Those kind of changes would require a keynote from Apple, which by the looks of it isn't going to happen

Yeah, that seems to be the case, at least as of now. Well, let's keep hoping for that update in the coming days/weeks. :)

there is no sign of any iMac upgrade anytime soon. A bump in CPU won't mean much without a better video card. The iMac is already unable to fully utilize the i7 CPU because it is throttled down under high temp. rMBP will probably be updated first. I personally don't expect anything before next summer. For me it's already too late, while I still proudly use my 2013 rMBP but I know it will probably be the last. I built a monster PC for the fraction of the cost and it works good. I use adobe products so their work on both platforms.

this makes me a sad panda :(

I do think that we are going to see an update. It's highly unlikely that they will sell a year old iMac without the slightest change other than El Capitan. Perhaps not Skylake/NVidia (which would be awesome) but at least Broadwell/New AMD.

Plus of course 512 SSD as standard, lol..

Well, it is true the BTO iMac retina models are delayed across the board through like the 13th. I checked the other Macs and some are pushed to the 9th.

Stuff like this has happened before, hasn't it? Just a shortage of stock or a surge? I'm not trying to read too much into it at the moment, but changing from a mouse to a trackpad shouldn't add two weeks. :p I think the iMac is the only Mac that ships with a mouse or keyboard in the box, right? So it's just a matter of tossing a boxed mouse/trackpad in with the shipment on other Macs.

On a separate note, has anyone here ordered a mac that was refreshed before shipment? Do they typically step you up to whatever's equivalent or do you have to ship it back/cancel the order?

I would buy a Broadwell/New AMD refresh...

PS. Just bought the new MacBook (1.2 Ghz) to replace my Mid-2012 MBA 11". Helped me feel better about sending back my Haswell 5k iMac that arrived yesterday, haha. Bring on those retina screens!

I know, that will be pure speculation, but what price point do you expect for the 4K 21.5" iMac?
Something like 1600?

If we're purely speculating? My bet is a premium of $100-200. I could, theoretically, see them just killing off the line non-retina line entirely at that point.

"Fastest" shipping on the top-of-the-line BTO 5K iMac shows Oct 13-15 in the USA store. My guess is any October iMac CPU refresh will be Broadwell but Skylake iMacs are my preference.

Apple has filled a new update to the magic mouse and wireless keyboard with the FCC the magic mouse 2 and keyboard will be equipped with bluetooth 4.2 could that tie into a 27" 5k iMac refresh i hope so

What's the average turnaround from filing to hitting the shelves on things like this? Like... when did the 6s get filed, for example?

You cant compare the two. iPhones sales are 70 million per quarter, Mac sales in total are about 20 million per year. So when they file they still need to produce a **** ton before release, it takes time, but for Mac it should be pretty short

Sure, the production faculties are also orders of magnitude different, but they also likely have a launch date in mind when filing. It raises the question of how soon in advance does a company file before launching a product, not necessarily lead time in production (but that's also important, which is really the root of my question admittedly) If you prefer, let's talk original Magic Mouse. Either way, FCC filings take time to be approved and knowing the average timeline for a product would be useful in trying to predict and/or make educated purchasing decisions. But anyway, yes: I'm hoping it's a short turnaround as well.

unknown I'm gonna try to find more info as i would really like a 5k iMac

Yeah, it's a musing question... I'm not sure there's an easily trackable list of dates for that.

Flagship store on fifth avenue in Manhattan out of stock on the retina iMacs (and several othe Manhattan stores). Color me encouraged. Used the iOS app to check stock.

I personally don't see any need a for a premium. Unlike 5k or when the rMBP came out, 4K has been around for awhile already. No reason to keep the non-retinas around to be honest.

Broadwell is no-go for me! They can stick Broadwell deep in their asses.

Bring Skylake and NOW

There IS NO SKYLAKE and Broadwell won't add much (except less heat and less power!). But honestly, what is wrong with the 4.0 quad core Haswell. It's a mighty powerful, powerful chip.

thunderbolt 3, quad-channel ddr4, new GPU

New GPU. That's the biggest need. And I don't even play games or edit video. I just don't want my $3,000 iMac reaching egregious temps from fairly basic tasks. From what I read, the CPU in the current 5k iMacs gets warm because of the iMac design, but the GPU gets downright scary hot. No thanks.

Broadwell wouldn't be too exciting, but at least it would run cooler -- and presumably last longer -- coupled with a new GPU.
