Its a big conundrum, most likely Apple will update the Retina iMac before the end of the year, but if they don't, I would be buying a year old+ Retina iMac. I have an aging 2010 Macbook Pro thats holding me through, but I definitely need an upgrade. I would obviously prefer a Skylake updated processor but if its Broadwell so be it. If it gets refreshed I'm buying it.

Here's the issue with that part: It benchmarks less than the 4.0 Haswell and it is a 3.4GHz part -- so crap marketing and quite honestly who wants a lower performing part just to get ride a bit of heat? . http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-6700+@+3.40GHz The 6700K has the same clock speed as the current version 4.0 (and reportedly about a 10% performance gain) but an increased wattage is required.

The base clock speed is lower, but the boost clock speeds are very close. This is the more important parameter. The max turbo on the 6700K is 4.2 Ghz, 6700 is 4 Ghz and the 4790K is 4.4 Ghz. Is 200 Mhz between the 6700 and the 6700K going to make a significant difference? Probably not. I would be interested to see a thorough review of the 6700, but I haven't seen any yet.

I think the best bang for your buck if you absolutely CAN'T wait is this refurbished model iMac. Only downside is that it doesn't have the AMD M295. But the 8GB of ram could be easily replaced for a 32GB.

I'm going to try to hold it out for Skylake. Idc about a redesign; but I agree it's absurd to buy a year old iMac especially when technology develop so quick.

Is anyone else just waiting for Skylake iMacs so we have compatibility to build Skylake Hackintoshes? With Skylake, we need a new motherboard, new RAM, etc, so building a Haswell/Broadwell Hackintosh now severely limits future upgradeability. Can't wait!!

Has Apple ever dropped a hardware refresh in November? My thought is it's too close to the holidays, and most people will have already sussed out what they're putting under the tree by November; hence the need for an earlier update.

If an announcement goes out for an event, I suppose I can just cancel it or even return it if it comes much later... not my ideal situation (actually, I don't like it at all, but I'm Mac-less right now), so come on Apple! Update the things! :p

Oct. 23, 2012 iMac redesign introduction
Nov.30, 2012 iMac orders begin

We still have time for an update or a redesign.

With the rumor/codes for 4K 21inch iMac, and iPad pro, I'm pretty sure there will be another event in lat October or early November.
Though iMac may not be such a huge hit, but iPad pro is. By now we only know that it's coming in November, but when exactly? Something this important like iPad pro, there should be another event at least revealing the exact release date. And I think iMacs may get an update on that event.. So just wait for a month and we will know by then

I doubt they will do a redesign without doing an official event. I think they will release the 21 4k with the same design and I don't expect any updates for the 27" this year. The small 27 is still labeled as new and I don't think AMD have a new GPU that could be used in the bigger model. My guess is that they will refresh (with Skylake) the entire line at WWDC 2016 and bring 3d touch to the macbook line and the trackpad2 and give the mini/imac a redesign in 2017.

I ended up getting a Macbook Pro 15".^^; I'm definitely going to like it. Dollar-for-dollar I'm sure it'll be everything I'm hoping for. I may end up getting a 4K monitor at some point for it, so I'll get along fine... had they updated the Macs with the new release, I'd probably have jumped on it.

Ah well. Good luck everyone! I just needed a Mac "now" and just couldn't keep waiting.

Congrats on the purchase. I'm going to hold out a little longer. I'm traveling for the first few weeks of October for work so won't have time to pick up my new computer until the last few days of October. Here's hoping to hear something by then.

Apple Store Germany delivers customized iMacs in 2-3 working days. In US it's still Oct 15...

So does anyone have any insight as to when the new Skylake iMacs will be released? Some are saying 2016, though I was expecting Apples 9th event to be the unveiling. I literally sold all my Macs to fund the purchase of a new iMac, and was banking on the iPhone event to announce th refresh. Of course I have a backup, my iPad. But I'm really hoping to pickup a Skylake Mac soon.

You sold all of your Macs anticipating Skylake? The indicators weren't there, mate. Why would you do something so draconian based on nothing?

I think if there's no update in October, I'll just order some RAM for my current 2009 iMac. It has 12 right now, and occasionally I'll max that out. Upgrade to 32GB should hold me over til a Skylake iMac. I've waited so long I don't want to give in now and settle for less.

Plus getting an iPad Pro should help mend that hole in my wallet. :p

If it doesn't happen in October, then I won't expect it until the Apple Watch 2 conference.

Yes, and at the end of this article they say ; "iMacs are not expected to adopt Intel’s latest SkyLake processors until early-2016."

So not sure what this refresh will be -
Maybe just the 21.5 5k with haswell to bring inline with the 27?

Its confusing though because the middle of the article says

“We believe Apple will introduce new iMac models in 3Q15, which are expected to have key selling points such as more powerful processors and much better display quality,” he wrote.

So then what the hell are they putting in it? LOL

Broadwell? In any event, if they're correct & the refreshed imacs deliver a much better display, that would be awesome.

Yeah honestly, a better display sounds great. Im not all that crazy about a new processor and what not, I just want to make sure I'm not buying a model thats a year old LOL.

I've been following this topic too since my Dell is now 8 years old and chugging along.. A couple of things to keep in mind:

The Skylake chipset comes with some new perks (DDR4 RAM, USB 3.1, WiGig, etc.), but as a performance upgrade alone it's not much. And apparently Thunderbolt 3 (the other big new Intel offering) can be made compatible with Broadwell chips- it requires a separate controller and isn't tied to the Skylake processor.

Since there are rumors of Skylake production delays and shortages, it's possible Apple could up all the processors to 5th-gen, add Thunderbolt 3 (which is major future-proofing for external GPUs) and call it a day.

It could be a last-minute call on sixth-gen/fifth-gen + Thunderbolt 3/no-refresh if they're waiting on Intel to show up with new desktop CPUs..
