Looking forward to what ever is announced next week! Im still thinking 27" will get a refresh alongside the 4K 21.5"with new magic mouse and keyboard and updated internals. My Barclay Visa Card is ready ;)
yep my Nationwide card is primed and charged ready for me to hit that button :D

So if the rumors are true (which they most likely are), then there is a new 21,5" iMac with a 4K display next week, but not a new 5K iMac? At least, if there is a 5K iMac aswell, then we would have most likely gotten some rumors about it too, would we? I just ask because I could still return my 5K iMac until tomorrow. But to me, it rather looks like there is no new 5K iMac next week, but rather sometime early next year or so.

Would be painful if I'm wrong, though.

I would honestly be surprised if there's no 27" update, especially considering the over 1-week delay for any BTO options. I don't think there are often rumors for refreshes/spec bumps, so it shouldn't be that troubling that there's no 27"-specific rumor. The 21.5" moving to 4k is a little bit more than a spec bump and more rumor-worthy, but that's just my personal analysis of this situation.

I agree with this analysis. Also, we have seen code for GPUs like the M395X and I don't think we will see that in the 21.5" for heat and positioning reasons. So I expect a 27" update next week or not long afterwards.

Here are my guesses as of right now:

Code:
Late 2013 - Mid 2015 ——> Late 2015

21.5” non-Retina HD 5000 $1099 ——> 21.5” non-Retina HD 6000 $1099*
21.5” non-Retina Iris Pro 5200 $1299 ——> 21.5” Retina Iris Pro 6200 $1399*
21.5” non-Retina GT 750M $1499 ——> 21.5” Retina R9 M380 $1699*
27” non-Retina GT 755M $1799 ——> (discontinued?)
27” Retina R9 M290 $1999 ——> 27” Retina R9 M390 $1999*
27” Retina R9 M290X $2299 ——> 27” Retina R9 M395 $2299
27” Retina R9 M295X $2549 ——> 27” Retina R9 M395X $2499-$2549

* Although the spacings between these price points probably aren’t overly large, Apple is likely to go for four sub-$1999 models. In that case, I think that we may see two HD 6000 models or the continuation of the old 21.5" HD 5000 and Iris Pro 5200 models.

Yes, I would say that M395X code they found is another indication of the 27" refresh. Plus, I don't think the Iris Pro 6200 has been used yet, so that would be the 21.5" refresh. I can't wait for Tuesday!

My guess is that is that the high end 21.5" gets the M370X and a the $1799 27" gets the M380. This falls in line with previous schemes; where the high end 21.5" got the 15" rMBP GPU, while the base 27" had a slightly more powerful GPU.

Just to throw this out there...if we look at Mac Pro refreshes, even though there are upgraded CPUs/GPUs out there, Apple refuses to refresh. :p

If the 21 inch gets a 4k display refresh and the 27 doesn't get its incremental love, that'd be odd.

The iPad mini got a refresh and the iPad Air 2 is the same. sometimes apple holds back a product when a big change is imminent. Given the iPad pro's spot in the lineup, the air 2 might be due for a significant change.

Given Skylake and thunderbolt 3, the iMac may be due for a design change and the 27 is being held back for that.

I just hope they don't make it thinner. We need performance, proper cooling (and quiet), not a 3mm thin desktop.

Sometimes I don't get their decisions. I mean, instead of making the iPhone 3mm thinner, make the battery last 5 hours more for god's sake

I'd be happy for an iMac to be a little thicker at the back but if such a change was to happen (and I doubt it, for the record) I'd like to see the black bezel around the screen reduced a little, too. Maybe one day.

The bezel will no doubt be reduced some day. But those are aesthetic changes, I'm talking actually useful changes, like a full fledged desktop GPU for example. Those can't come when they keep slimming the damn thing.

I share your objective. However, knowing Apple and their desire to go thin, I would fight it from the opposite end. That I hope they make it so thin that one day, no dGPU can fit in it, not even a mobile one.

Then they will be forced to make our beloved xMac.

So I hope they keep slimming the iMac down. Go slim guys, I want to to make it disappear when viewing it from the side.

I don't think we are going to get a redesign until the end of next year or 2017. If the 4k iMac is introduced next week with the same form factor, I do not think the 27" inch will get a redesign until the earliest the end of next year. Apple wouldn't redesign the from factor of one and not the other IMO. So if the 4k iMac has the same form factor, I wouldn't hope for a redesign until atleast a year from now. I have no problem with the current design though, they can keep that for the next five years IMO.

If they were going to do yet another redesign, they would have done when they released the Retina 5K iMac. I think the Late 2012 is the redesign, and then dropped 5K in when it was ready. Heck, the Late 2012 iMac design was probably built to be ready for the 5K iMac from the beginning.

With GPUs like the AMD R9 Nano and the new GTX 980 for notebooks, desktop and laptop GPU performance seems to be merging as the chips get efficient enough. I suspect NVidia may drop the "M" moniker all together from their naming scheme in a generation or two.

Exactly my point. The only thing I can see them doing is reducing bezel size eventually, sort of like the retina macbook pro, but an altogether redesign won't before a year or two.

Speculate with me on the performance boost of an updated 27.

1) Skylake i7 = 20% faster?
2) PCI-E = new version twice as fast?
3) Switch to NVIDIA for cuda?
4) Stay with AMD, 395x is how much faster?
5) New GPU has more than 4gb?
6) Expandable to 64gb ram?

Almost bought the fully loaded retina refurb for $3500, but the refresh just has to be faster right?

My suggestion of a redesign (and I only think minor if anything) was to support a theory why they might update the 21.5 inch to 4K and not touch the 27 inch ones at all. The rumours currently do not mention the 27 inch and some people wondered how could they possibly not refresh the 27 inch if they updated the 21.5.

I think "merging" is the wrong term. The low power GPUs are just getting more powerful, fast. The high power GPUs are also getting more powerful. There is always going to be a need for low and high power (TDP) GPUs to suit the application.

Distinctions between desktop/laptop GPU by putting an "M" in a name is just marketing. The specs dictate the application in the end. People want a 250W desktop class GPU, they don't want a 100W part marketed as "desktop class" (all else being equal of course).
