Last year it was either 1TB Fusion/256 GB SSD standard. It seems logical that they either drop the Fusion completely, or they provide something like 3TB Fusion/512 SSD as standard.

If we are given 512 SSD as standard, I might even upgrade to 1 TB SSD as I need the extra space. Or get the 512 SSD and buy a separate SSD at a later date, it will depend on what the prices are.

It may only be an issue to me ;)

But as we know the pure HDD is living on borrowed time. I would not be surprised if the next iMac refresh did away with the HDD completely and forced either the fusion or SSD options on to us for all models.

Combined with the fact that SSD pricing has dropped through the floor over the last 12 months I think there is a very real chance that the SSD options on iMacs will drop the 256gb SSD and make the base choice 512GB.

I'd rather wait and see right now.

The 512GB SSD is now a $300 upcharge....
Not exactly a big deal or a deal breaker IMHO.

True enough but if they keep the same pricing and just change the capacities it becomes a $300 upcharge for the 1TB SSD which, while not competitive, is well worth the money.

I keep checking other retailers hoping to see tightened stock. Got all excited when Amazon's first seller wasn't Amazon.com -- only to realize it was taking sales tax into account so it was cheaper. (Curse you Amazon for getting my hopes up while you were trying to save me money!)

I'm considering getting a 12" Macbook and a docking connector if there's no iMac refresh. If I can take it down to a single cable to deal with, that adds portability... Really, I just want to do iOS development on it and web stuffs. Maybe some photoshop/modeling/ZBrush... maybe Macbook Pro, but if they'd just put USB-C on one that'd make everything a whole lot easier (I honestly did not see myself saying that when I started this post.)

You'd be disappointed with a Macbook, it's really slow compared to the rest of the Macbook family. I don't have one, but I tried it and I wasn't impressed.

I've toyed with one. I'm aware it's pretty much netbook territory; I was just musing aloud. :p Honestly I'm still gunning for an iMac refresh, but I'm gonna make the call come the 30th, probably. Maybe wait a week or two past that to see if any invites for an Apple event go out. I'm not hurting that badly for a new mac (though I'm mac-less at the moment) just yet. I know I won't hit November without one ordered, at least.

Whether its a silent update or not, I think we will have more of a hint by the end of this month with the El Capitan release whether Apple will have another event. Since the Apple TV and iPad Pro are coming out in November shouldn't there be an event were they announce official release dates/pre-orders etc.

I sold my Late 2013 27" iMac (top-spec) a couple of months ago as I found I was using it mainly for gaming in Boot Camp and that newer games were starting to run pretty bad (even with the 780M). It was a good move in the end because I got a great price for it and I'd bought it with a student discount originally. Anyway, I figured I'd keep using my MacBook Pro, as I have been doing, and that I'd build a gaming PC. That said, I'll likely buy a 5K iMac pretty soon but not go crazy with upgrades. Luckily, I'm in no rush so I'll wait it out and see what happens but I can totally see the frustration from people needing a new iMac and not knowing when's the time to buy.

A very good point. Skylake/TB3 is a big bullet point though... I'm betting WWDC if not around the 30th. Part of me feels like I should just go ahead and order what I need and hope for the best. I'd LIKE a stronger graphic chip, but I seriously doubt we'll see a big bump.

With intel announcing the Skylake roadmap, how likely would a Skylake 27" iMac be in Fall 2015, probable announcement October?

Would it be a big improvement?

I want the Retina iMac, but I too am willing to wait a few weeks to see what happens.

SkyLake would be a big help with moving Retina pixels around, as would any graphics card bump of course.

There was also a recent story making the rounds about an updated Bluetooth keyboard and mouse coming soon: sounds like they would be for any new iMac. I could also imagine a new Apple Trackpad with 3D force and "taptic" feedback coming, to give the iMac the same kind of feedback as new Mac Books, don'tcha think?

i don't think it will lunch next week or week after. maybe end of October
From a hardware or software point of view there should be nothing holding them back, unless they are waiting for some unreleased GPU from AMD.

To me it seems that all the required components are ready for end of next week making a launch possible next week or the first week of October. At some point Kuo was also saying Q3 which would be next week.

While it is unlikely there will be another Apple event this year (but silent updates are very likely),
Nvidia just released the GTX 980 for notebooks.
http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/articles/introducing-the-geforce-gtx-980-notebooks

Skylake CPUs have been out for a while. Back-to-school ending next week. El capitan launching next week.

I have high hopes for next tuesday/wednesday or the week after for iMac update.

I think that nVidia GTX 980 would be simply too hot for iMac's case, unless they redesign it with more vents or something...but it would definitely be a killer iMac!

B and H also shows some inventory pending. I don't ever recall them doing this just for a software update. So retina 21.5 and upgrades to the 27 coming September 30th (or now Best Buy has October 2nd at a bunch of stores)

I need a new imac27 NOW.. i am getting the screen freeze multiple times daily. Mouse moves, but screen is frozen. I have to power off and power back on at least three times daily. Got mine in 2010 and it's time for a new one. I just dont want to buy with skylake coming soon. This is killing me because i want to spend the money today.

I just returned my refurbed 2015 5K iMac within the 14 day return window. Pretty sweet machine but I noticed a little "lag" when panning Apple Maps in full screen 3D mode and Google Earth Flight Sim, although almost perfectly smoothe, it was not perfectly smoothe. Hate to spend all that $$ for less than perfection. Hoping for Skylake and new better GPU sooooooon!

My advice, after consulting a few 'Apple' people: If you need one now, buy one NOW. I see the prices for second hand iMac's going up (and seriously up). I see in Belgium that Skylake CPU's are in stock... Do I have to say more? There's no lack of CPU's...

What will you do after Skylake when Cannondale is on the market? Change?
Buy yourself a good machine now and be happy with it.

Cannonlake you mean! Cannonlake will bring nothing new, on the other hand Skylake has much to offer comparing to Haswell.

Personally i w8 for new GPU and 2nd generation Display

I'm sorry, that's what I meant: CannonLake. Personally I see no miracle changes...
A new GPU would be fine.

Were you on El Capitan?
