Thank everyone in this topic

I would like to ask about this command line

disable hibernation by typing "sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0 standby 0 autopoweroff 0" in the terminal

If I want to cancel this command, what I need to do?

Why I need to do that? Becuase my device is MBPr 2015, it dose support deep sleep and hibenation right?
So let get back to default is better I guess

Please correct me

Regard,

You'd go to the Energy Saver control panel, and in each of the "Battery" and "Power Adapter" sections, you would hit the "Restore Defaults" button

Thank everyone.

PS. After you guy install new ssd to your device, what you do with the original mac ssd?
Is there any external box for original mac ssd? It should be use as external usb drive?

I try google, mostly for the ngff not for mac ssd.
Please advise
Thank everyone

Hi guys,
I have a MacBook Pro Late-2013 13",and i want to upgrade SSD to 512GB,while im so confused which SSD can be the best choice.

I just care more about the battery usage and then speed. And sometimes i have to use applications on Windows so i want it to support installing with Windows10.

I really really need your suggestion!
Thank you sooo much!
I installed the Sabrent 2TB drive, but I could never get boot camp to work. It would install ok, and I could get windows running, but bootcamp control panel couldn’t load, seems like it was an incompatibility with the ssd. Parallels runs fine though.

Model/Year
Macbook Pro 15” Mid 2015

Boot ROM Version:
194.0.0.0.0

SSD Make / Model / Size
Sabrent 1TB

Adapter
Sintech small Matte black

Kapton Tape required
YES

Got some Kapton tape and made another attempt. Had some success.

It's been up and running for about 10 hours with mixed tasks including about 6h of blackmagic speed test running while playing 4k videos.

We'll see if stays ok after a few days and weeks.

Hello,
sorry for not having posted anything in this thread for 1 month,
I had a little daughter which was born 3 weeks ago so I had better time than working on NVMe drives, sorry :)

As for the consumptions tests I did, as stated they are exclusively made on a 13" late 2013 rMBP (with the NVMe DXE driver patched in the BootRom).
Thus my consumption tests are only representative of power consumption with PCIe 2.0 speeds (not 3.0), and power consumption in a Mac (not in a Windows or Linux PC).

As mo5214 says, macOS doesn't handle APSM, so it is best to find a NVMe drive with a low "idle" power consumption (which is usually ~0,5W), unfortunately it seems we will never get the very low "sleep" power consumption of NVMe drives (~0,010W)
[automerge]1571330110[/automerge]

Actually macOS does handle ASPM in other devices, just not for NVMe Devices according to the output of lspci tool I ran (lspci -vvv). Other PCI devices (such as Wifi, and GPU) supports them just fine.

Check it out!.

I suppose the Generic NVMe Driver Apple provided doesn't provide support for it. and someone might be able to patch it in the future. (I wish I know how reverse engineer the kext right about now)

Bootcamp is working perfectly in my Macbook Pro 15" Mid 2015. I have installed windows using Bootcamp in both Mojave and Catalina. No issues.

Hey guys, I'm looking to upgrade SSD on my 2015 MacBook 13.
I googled a bit and it seems that macOS doesn't support the Autonomous Power State Transition or APST for the NVME drives. This is the feature that sends SSD controller into a deep-sleep state when it's not used, and it also seems to be affecting some power-saving CPU functions too.
According to some tests done by AnandTech ( https://www.anandtech.com/show/13759/comparing-adata-sx8200-pro-vs-hp-ex950/9 ), the difference between power-saving mode(lpm enabled) and without it is quite substantial:

Has anybody done a battery life comparison with stock apple ssd vs nvme drive ?
Since battery drain in a sleep mode could be easily fixed by enabling hibernation I'm mostly interested in how it affects runtime in regular usage tasks like web-surfing or movies playing.
Thanks.

I've installed the 1TB Crucial P1 on a 2015 MacBook Pro 13" (3.1 GHz), using the long version of the sintech adapter. From the beginning I noticed heat issues (SSD always > 40C), and massive battery drawdown. When closing the lid, the battery would continue to be consumed. It was pretty obvious that there are issues.

Since I mainly want long battery life on this machine, I sourced a 512GB Apple OEM SSD (eBay), on the hunch that it would be Apple hardware integration at work.

The result is a cool running SSD (idle temp ~32C), with ample battery life! Right now I'm getting 7 hours on a 83% capacity battery.

It was fun for a little while, but I'm glad I won't have to do more digging through this endless thread, futzing around with magic Kapton tape and firmware hacks (yikes!).

It seems to me that there is something fundamentally broken with the NVME drive adapter use concept. Maybe it's the lack of activation of the power management you describe. The question is if this could be enabled on the OS side, or is a hardware feature of Apple's proprietary SSDs.

Edit: mo5214 points out that the MacOS NVMe driver doesn't support ASPM, so a driver patch to enable ASPM could be possible.

as I notice from here 660p one of the worst with battery drain because of some firmware 'issue' *I guess* after some session of loads while idle drive could still drain like its still writing about 30 min
so I couldn't recommend it for sure

Is there something that can be done to resolve this? I am experiencing brutal battery drain. During light usage the battery drops roughly 1% per minute. Astonishingly bad compared to the original SSD.

Collecting some istats data now. The large spike is from a Black Magic speed test I did. The rest is simple web browsing or idle. Collecting data while plugged into power, not sure if that matters. Running on a 2015 15" MBP.

were your testings and high battery drain after a fresh install of the new drive and restoring Time Mashine backup to it? Because, first 2-3 days Spotlight indexing new drive and it gives you higher power consumption.
I just tried to start Black Magic on original Apple 1TB SSD, rMBP 15" late 2013 with only 10Gb free space on it and it draws almost 1.5 amp on writing and after 3 minutes of this test temp on both SSD sensors was around 60 C.

No, this is after several months of use and observation. Even then it was a restore from a backup. Perhaps the drain isn't due to the amp usage but it's something to do with the new drive for sure.

You are very lucky. I have problems with BOOTCAMP. I put the SSD ADATA SX8200 Pro 1TB (162 USD and 5 years warranty) in my mac Air 13 early 2015.

Problem №1
When I turn on the mac, a message appears :
"macOS can't repair the disk BOOTCAMP. You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't save changes to fioles on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can."

Problem №2
On Windows operating system, I can not start bootcamp consol. This error appears:
"An error occurred while trying to access the startup disk settings. You may not have privileges to change the startup disk. Make sure you have administrator privileges and try again."

Did you do the work around suggested in Post #1?

BootCamp installation issues

During installation of Windows 10 via BootCamp, a blue screen may occur.
This was resolved by user ohnggni in post #1685, thanks to him.

Here are the two recommandations to Install BootComp with success on a MacBook Air / Pro with a NVMe SSD :
  • leave the Magsafe charger plugged in during the whole installation process (don't run on battery)
  • When you see the error pop-up, "The Computer restarted unexpectedly....", please do the following :

1. Press Shift + F10 keys.
2. Launch "regedit".
3. Find this directory, "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\Status\ChildCompletion"
4. Once you can see "setup.exe" in the right section, double-click it and modify the value to 3.
5. Close the regedit.
6. Reboot

No. This post will not help. A man writes about a problem installing Windows. And in my case, Windows was installed successfully. But I can not start the BOOTCAMP control panel C: \ Windows \ System32 \ AppleControlPanel.exe and I get an error. Even when mac os Catalina starts up, another error appears that the system cannot work with the BOOTCAMP disk.

I have the same issue I even got windows 10 running on VM Fusion 11 from that Boot Camp partition, but can't run natively unless its on Safe Mode.

I can confirm. I now have a MacBookAir 6,1 with a Samsung 1TB 970 EVO Plus sitting in a Sintech adapter running normally. Since I restored from a Time Machine backup it's taking a bit to settle down but I'll try to get some benchmarks up shortly.
How's battery life? Have you noticed any heavy battery drain in idle?

Why do people put tape on some of these adapters and not others? How does tape change how the adapter functions?

My macbook pro 2014 15 has a samsung 1 tb evo pro and can go all day losing like 25 or 30 percent of power with moderate usage.

It appears all sorts of different power consumption things are going on.

The 970 evo not the most efficient but dang pretty reliable.

Definitely worse than with the stock Apple SSD, I'd estimate runtime was halved. Checking with iStat Menu I can tell it's definitely running hotter and the fan is running a little faster so I'm assuming that's playing a part along with the higher power consumption of the Samsung.

Some screenshots; first with the stock Apple SSD:

Screen Shot 2019-10-21 at 7.25.05 PM.pngScreen Shot 2019-10-21 at 7.25.25 PM.pngScreen Shot 2019-10-21 at 7.25.34 PM.pngScreen Shot 2019-10-21 at 7.25.44 PM.png

Now, with the Samsung 970 Evo Plus:

Screen Shot 2019-10-21 at 6.57.24 PM.pngScreen Shot 2019-10-21 at 7.01.33 PM.pngScreen Shot 2019-10-21 at 7.01.22 PM.pngScreen Shot 2019-10-21 at 7.00.47 PM.png

Boot picker treats it like an external device (yellow icon) but System Profiler lists it as an internal NVMExpress device, under "Generic SSD Controller", interesting. Seems solid thus far, no hangs or crashes. I'm not particularly happy with how the adapter fits, but it seems fine. I'll probably get some thermal foam to place between the adapter and the SSD to help spread the heat around.

Wow!! that power drain seems pretty bad compared to stock apple SSD.
I just bought a Corsair MP510 for my 2015 MBP 13 and I'm worried about how bad the battery can be impacted. I'm just waiting for the adapter.

For those wondering how is battery life with SSD Sabrent Rocket 1TB + Sintech Long black adapter in a Macbook Pro 11,4. (mid 2015 15inch) in Catalina.

Around 7 hours. With 75% brightness and browsing the web (safari) and listening to music in spotify.

Best Regards.

Did anyone try this SSDs from US seller:SSD on eBay

I am looking for a simple option to upgrade my 2014 Macbook 13" Retina to 512 or 1Tb, but i dont want all the hassle. A1502 model that is.

I am thinking that he is just selling a normal SSD with adapter mounted on it, and that it will give sleep issues. Or do you guys think this seller managed to fix these issues? Seller will not reply to questions so i cannot contact directly.

Price is very good, so i was thinking this is the way to go.
