Why do you prefer long adapter better than the short ones?
They are exactly the same in terms of electric circuitry. The only advantage I see in the use of the long model is to avoid any capacitive/short circuit effects due to the proximity of the SSD and the bottom metal case of the laptop.
I used the short version on my wife's MBA (in signature) and had to place Kapton tape to isolate the SSD and the bottom case otherwise the laptop would have kernel panics several times a day.

Hey everyone - I've been reading and searching through this thread for several days.Thank you to all who've contributed.

I have a mid-2015 15" MBP and had been running Monterey. My internal SSD failed ~2 weeks ago and I've been running the Mac off of a bootable external as a stopgap.

I just tried to install a WD Black SN850X SSD with the long Sintech adapter (which I did buy from Amazon...so perhaps it's a counterfeit or a dud)? Each time I try to start up, it gets stuck in a reboot cycle. I've tried using a Monterey bootable installer I made, Internet Recovery, and even the external bootable backup SSD that I'd been booting from successfully prior to removing the original SSD.

Again, I was able to get to the internet recovery menu, click on the SD installer or bootable installer, etc (depending on whatever method I tried -- I did try some with no externals attached, FWIW), but then the computer started power cycling again. Once or twice, I've also received the question mark folder warning logo.

Again, I had been using Monterey on the original SSD, so the BootROM should be set, but since the old drive was kaput, there was no way to check. Any suggestions, aside from reodering the adapter or trying the slower, less reliable OWC drive?

FWIW, it also seemed reluctant to start up at all on battery power despite a full charge. I tried to make sure I reconnected the battery cable carefully but could that be off? If it were, would it be able to start up at all? From all I've read, it seems like a drive or BootROM error more based on the symptoms I've seen.

Update: I reinstalled the original drive (the one that's failed) and with it back in place, I am able to boot from my bootable external again. I don't know if that helps inform any troubleshooting tips, but figured more info doesn't hurt!

It is not clear for me if you tried this:

1- With the SN850X installed in your MBP, boot it with only the Monterey installer stick plugged in on a USB port.
1a. When you power on the computer, immediately hold the Option key until you see all bootable options.
2a. Using the arrow keys, navigate to the Monterey Installer option and select it by pressing Enter.

If it does not work, it is probably an incompatibility of the SSD firmware with the model of your Mac and you will have to get another SSD like the one on the previous page reported by @fractalus (post 12442). Their computer is probably the same as yours and the SK hynix P41 worked for them.

Thank you -- I did try the steps above but used the cursor rather than the arrow keys. I will try that! I was hoping to try the Hynix P31 originally but couldn't find it,but will give the P41 a shot.
Try the short Sintech adapter instead?

Did someone report success with the 580X? I don't see it among the recommended drives on the first page of the thread.
I used the SN850X, which several people have reported using successfully in 2025 (not sure if it was with my specific MBP model, though).

I just ordered the shorter adapter and will try it with both the WD and the Hynix P41!

Another note for future users: I had already ordered the OWC Aura Pro X2 (i.e. the NON-m.2 drive with Apple's proprietary pins) before I found this thread, so I gave that a try as well, but could NOT get it into the SSD slot; the pin side seems too thick and it wasn't even close to being far enough in the slot that I could lay it flat and screw it in. Even though I was very careful attempting to insert it, I'm afraid it may have damaged something, because after that install attempt, even my original SSD + bootable external combo gets stuck in the perpetual reboot cycle :(. I decided to leave things alone for a few days and will try things again when the Hynix drive arrives.

A few other questions:
  1. Should I try removing and reinserting my original drive before trying the short adapter with the WD and Hynix, in case the original's not seated properly or something? In other words, will it possibly benefit the next attempt if I get things booting with the OG drive in place immediately beforehand?
  2. The power issues seem to be persisting, too, despite efforts to reset the PRAM and SMC. It's doing the thing where (if the device is plugged into power), it powers on if I touch any key, even if I haven't pressed the power key, and again, it's reboot city. Any other steps to try in this regard? I read a comment in some forum saying that sometimes, the battery cable can be pressed down TOO far and that adjusting that can help... any other suggestions/tips? Apologies if this last question veers from the thread topic a bit, but I don't know if it's could be related to the SSDs, SSD pins, software/firmware/settings, etc .... or not.

Yes, you can do that. Sometimes cleaning the ssd contacts also help.

Looks like the MBP is entering sleep mode. It sometimes happens with my MBP as well, just by opening the lid, it turns on.

If you unplug the battery, your MBP will slow down a lot, just reseat the cable and leave it plugged in.

Also, I suggest you unplug your external SSD, install the original Apple's SSD and run the hardware diagnostic tool following the instructions on this link:
If there is no hardware issues, then you can proceed to test the short adapter and the Hynix SSD.

Thank you, everyone, for all the great advice. The hardware test threw me a few battery errors -- eventually, I got one saying the battery wasn't detected and that prompted me to test the battery cable again. Turns out I hadn't been snapping the cable back in as far as I thought... after pressing down more and hearing a second click, everything worked with the Hynix P41 Platinum and long Sintech adapter. Woohoo!

We also have an early 2015 MBP (13" model), so I decided to test the WD SN850X there, in part to see if the issues I had with that drive were isolated/potentially another poor seating of the battery cable.

I didn't unplug the battery cable at all on the 13" so it booted fine and I was able to navigate to Disk Utility (a step I couldn't reach on the other MBP due to reboot cycles). The drive doesn't appear in disk utility at all, so I am guessing there might be compatibility issues between it and the 2015 models. am going to try another Hynix in the 13"... although now I'm reading about the write speed slow down issues with the P41 platinum line that requires a firmware update that future readers of this forum may want to perform BEFORE installing the drive, since it's a step that must be done with a Windows device.

Thank you again for all the great feedback. I hope my own trial and error may help others in the future.

Hi, do you suggest me to edit anything, is it good with these settings? 500GB SN570 on Early-2015 13 MBP on 489.0.0.0.0 firmware? it is likely draining battery while lid is closed I guess or is it normal?

Your numbers look good. With NVMe, it is normal to have battery drain when the lid is closed. To avoid that, you can try to force a deeper hibernation:

From man pmset:

- hibernatemode = 3 by default on portables. The system will store a copy of memory to persistent storage (the disk), and will power memory during sleep. The system will wake from memory, unless a power loss forces it to restore from hibernate image.

- hibernatemode = 25 is only settable via pmset. The system will store a copy of memory to persistent storage (the disk), and will remove power to memory. The system will restore from disk image. If you want "hibernation" - slower sleeps, slower wakes, and better battery life, you should use this setting.

late 2015 iMac with Kernel Panic here. I'm running Monterey 12.7.6 and I have installed the SK hynix Platinum P41 NVMe and the Sintech adapter. Everything works fine until it goes to sleep, i get the following error when it wakes. I verified the Bootrom is correct 489.0.0.0.0 and I checked open core legacy patcher for the 3rd party nvme pm was enabled. Any suggestions? Thanks!

late 2015 iMac with Kernel Panic here. I have installed the SK hynix Platinum P41 NVMe and the Sintech adapter. Everything works fine until it goes to sleep, i get the following error when it wakes. I verified the Bootrom is correct 489.0.0.0.0 and I checked open core legacy patcher for the 3rd party nvme pm was enabled. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Beyond me. I'd paste the crash logs into DeepSeek or the like. That might give you a non-expert-readable take on what's going wrong. You didn't mention the macOS version you're running, by the way. The log suggests it's Monterey. I had crash-on-sleep issues with an MBA (see signature) in the early versions of Sonoma/OCLP that later went away. You might look into whether an upgraded macOS might help.

Thanks, I am using Monterey, its the latest version my iMac will take unfortunately. I'll see if it will take Ventura but i think I tried before and it wouldn't install.

UPDATE: wouldn't download. its incompatible.

Look into Open Core Legacy Patcher (OCLP). It lets you run newer "incompatible" macOS versions on older hardware. That's what I used to upgrade my 2013 MBAs to Sequoia. You'll find threads on it in these forums (e.g., macOS 15 Sequoia on Unsupported Macs).

Because you're on Monterey I'm assuming your firmware is up to date and that isn't causing the SSD issue.

There is some info in this link:

But firstly, you use autopoweroff 1 and hybernatemode 0 which seems conflicted (man pmset)

If it does not solve your problem, I would forbid the iMac to sleep/hibernate at all by changing:
autopoweroff 0
standby 0
hibernatemode 0
powernap 0
sleep 0

and check if it works.

Thanks for the help, it didn't work so I decided to pull out the NVMe and put in a regular SSD. I figured it wasn't that much of a speed difference, from what I could tell its 7.8mbps with the NVMe and 6mbps with the ssd. Thoughts?

Hi Guys

I used to have mbpr15" 2014 version, upgraded to 1TB on adata SX8200pro, used it years and still fine, with chinese nvme adapter.

recently few months ago, i changed to mbp15" 2015 mid 2015 (11,5) with SX8200pro 512GB installed (with chinese nvme adapter as well), bcos of always kernel panics few time a day, and later i checked ssd health is around 73%, although drivedx still say ok, finally i thought since adata has been proven few years sx6000 lite and sx8200pro fully compatible, i recently bought Adata Legend 900 1TB (bcos i cant bought the old sx6000 and sx8200pro anymore).

but too bad, i cant even detected the nvme. I tried used ccc, as i have done many times before, to make the nvme bootable as external, then after successful ccc, I put the nvme as internal, again my macbook doesnt detected the drive.

I tried to change to my old proven working nvme chinese adaptor (working at my old 2014 machine), then same result. not detected. I googled a lot with no result. PRAM, SMC reset not solve as well.

i plugged in my old 2014 1TB with old nvme, the stuff boot perfectly.

Hence, i seems to conclude it's the Adata 900 problem.

I am quite desperate to buy another nvme or adapter.

any body here can provide some hints on what other things i must look for?

Thanks in advance.
