I've been following this thread closely and happened to receive both Polysoft (temporarily) and FANGYUAN so thought I'd chime in with my experience.

TL;DR
Ordered a 8 TB M4 Max back in June but gave up after the 21st November miss. I requested a refund also started the chargeback. Ordered from FANGYUAN instead. The Poylsoft order randomly arrived the day after my Aliexpress one. Tuned out it was the wrong size but Gilles responded with return label and refund within 3 days. The 8TB FANGYUAN SSD is running smoothly.

Polysoft SSD
I ordered a 8 TB for M4 Max using Luke Miani's discount code back in June with the expected 2 month wait. Held on as the production issues occurred and delays mounted because of the discount. Final straw was the November 21st date. Black Friday meant I could get the SSD from FANGYUAN for close to the same price so I messaged Polysoft days before asking for a refund if the package didn't arrive by the 21st and indicating I will make a chargeback otherwise.

Or course, the day came and went with no response, so I initiated a chargeback a week later. Gilles did eventually get back to me on the 2nd of December confirming if I wanted a refund so I said yes and waited. I finally received my Polysoft order on the 12th just after my Aliexpress FANGYUAN on the 11th. Turned out there was only 1 module in to so messaged again asking for a prepaid return label and refund. Surprisingly got a response today with the refund and return label.

I would suggest Polysoft change the supplied install kit to a Wiha driver with the required T6, T8 & 10IP bits

Interestingly my Polysoft SSD came with a Wera diver with T6, T8, and T10 bits, so it seems the Minnow is not universal.

Aliexpress FANGYUAN SSD
The box brand was Lynxis, which looks like the brand other Ali stores sell. They come in a nice box but not in any anti-static bags like Polysoft. Tools are also included along with a thin metal pry tool and 'guitar pick.' Unfortunately the pick was too thick so I had to carefully use the metal tool to remove the black ring. No scratches if you're careful. The NAND themselves are labeled Hynix but don't have black underfill like @Den-Fi.

IMG_3319.jpeg

Installation was smooth but I used Polysoft's instructions as the Lynxis one wasn't as detailed. The bottom cover screws were indeed very tight so I ultimately used my own tools. Restore was also simple. Just connected the DFU MacStudio to another Mac and used the Finder to do the restore. Didn't need Apple Configurator 2.

Performance was on par with what everyone else is getting. Amorphous disk mark summarised below. I bought the 512GB MacStudio so it's speeds are after the /
4GB Read (MB/s)4GB Write (MB/s)64GB Read (MB/s)64GB Write (MB/s)
SEQ1M QD87368/66628462/414369667003

RND4K QD641012/1241261/156584252
RND4K QD154/6239/393227

I had been booting from an external SSD while waiting so ran f3write on the new one as full disk write test. Couldn't find a data logger for Mac like HWiNFO so used iostat instead with this command.

Code:
iostat -w 1 disk0 2>&1 | tee Output.txt

This resulted in a log of the write speed in 1 second intervals.

f3write plot.png

I was quite surprised there were no significant drops in speed as I would expect once the SLC cache runs out. I don't know enough about how f3write writes to disk and this is by no means a rigorous test, so take the results with a grain of salt. f3read showed no corrupt sectors so all good there.

Conclusions
I originally went with Polysoft since they had a successful Kickstarter and offered a 5 year warranty, although as time went on I lost confidence in the ability for them to honour it. I still believe that there was no malicious intent on Polysoft's part, just that they got overwhelmed and had abysmal communication and expectation management. As a Stockholm Apple user, I think things that Gilles and dosdude do is very important. It's promising to see Gilles responding more quickly, at least to me. Ultimately I'm just relieved that I've finally got an SSD installed.

Finally, @gilles_polysoft. I hope that some takeaway from this is that communication is extremely important. No doubt you can see that is a common theme in many of the posts here. I don't need a personalised email, just regular generic updates. While I can't speak for everyone, I understand you're a small business and delays happen for such a niche product. I would be more willing to wait if I had updated information. I hope that others get their orders more quickly from now on and for those thinking about ordering, at this stage, caveat emptor.

@shng47 Glad you got a working upgrade eventually. I had talked to Gilles previously about supplying a toolset containing Torx Plus bits to make installation easier as this is closer to what is contained in the official Apple repair store kit which you can rent from Apple. He had promised to supply me a kit with the Wiha driver + bits you received. This did not happen as I received the Minnow kit. This was disappointing as it would really differentiate the Polysoft offering from the AliExpress SSDs.

Very similar experience, ordered bacrived in June, waited until Nov 21s requested refund, started charge back, ordered from AliExpress arrived 10days cost slightly less.

Conclusion, in line with yours.

My order was also "refunded" yesterday, despite the disputed charge with my credit card company having been resolved several weeks ago.

I have opened a case via my credit card issuer. Hoping that pushes Polysoft to finally ship my kit or else gets my money back so I can purchase elsewhere.

Update on the Polysoft website:

Delivery information update - December 18, 2025 :

1st batch
: all deliveries made between February 18 and March 9, 2025
2nd batch : all deliveries made between April 24 and May 12, 2025
3rd batch : all M1 and M3 cards delivered between July and August 2025, M2 and M4 delivered in december.
next deliveries : Of the 239 pre-orders, 84 have been delivered, with the remainder being shipped at a rate of approximately 15 orders per day (We apologize for the delay due to the absence of a key employee.)

We apologise again for the delays, which have resulted in 96 orders being reimbursed.

NOTE ON PRICES: NAND prices have increased a lot last 3 months. We will reopen orders by the end of December implementing the smallest possible price increase (below 10%).

Update on the Polysoft website:
In my experience he is still not responding to messages sent via the website. Good luck to you, filing the chargeback didn't seem to change their interest in fulfilling my order at all.

I still don't understand what is going on over there, every chargeback that is incurred costs the company extra money over top of the refund amount itself. You would think that they would make resolving those orders a priority, but nope.

It tells you everything you need to know that when there was a chance for Polysoft to make an order correction that resulted in them getting their money / product back, the reply and customer attention was very quick. Which means that they can clearly be very attentive and responsive when they wish to be (aka when it benefits them.)

Not so smooth a process the other way around, unfortunately, and I think this case is all the proof that you need to see that it is quite intentional.

I also don't get it. At some point, you'd think Stripe would shut down their account, based on the number of chargebacks.

Damn, ordered a 2tb for m4 max Mac Studio last week before reading the issues with polysoft. Please write if yours is being shipped this month.

They're seemingly only fulfilling orders from last summer (based on the replies here), not sure what your turn around time will be

Thank you for the reply. I can wait a month or two and use an external drive for now.

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some help or confirmation from users who already did a DFU restore on the latest Mac Studio.

What happened:

I have a Mac Studio M4 Max and I replaced the internal SSD with a third-party NVMe bought on AliExpress (FANGYUAN SSD).

The hardware installation went fine.

I’m now trying to restore the machine using DFU mode, but I’m stuck with the following error:

“Unable to update Mac. An unknown error occurred (4042)”

Setup details:

  • Target Mac: Mac Studio M4 Max
  • SSD: FANGYUAN NVMe (AliExpress, non-Apple)
  • Host Mac: MacBook Pro M1 Pro
  • DFU mode: entered correctly (black screen, device detected in Finder)
  • Action used: Restore (not Update)
  • No VPN / firewall / custom DNS
  • Tried multiple USB-C cables
  • Tried different networks, including iPhone hotspot

From what I understand, with non-Apple SSDs a DFU restore is mandatory, so this should be the correct procedure.

Questions:

  • Has anyone successfully restored a Mac Studio M4 using a third-party SSD?
  • Is error 4042 typically related to the host Mac / macOS version / Apple servers, or could it be an SSD compatibility issue?
  • Any recommendation on a specific macOS version for the host Mac that worked reliably.

Before assuming the SSD is incompatible and removing it, I’d really appreciate feedback from someone who managed to complete this successfully.

Thanks in advance 👍

Hi cybermaster69 make sure to connect to thunderbolt port next to the ethernet for dfu mode...

Yes i had same error. I did download the firmware to my mac as on some point the DFU mode run into timeout because the download took to long.

Download the Firmware to your mac, go to dfu mode and then restore the mac :)

Also for other people : be sure to have enough space on the MacBook you use for DFU restore!
Simple mistake but I could not understand at first why I had a “‘not enough space “ error I thought it was about the Mac Studio I replaced the disk, NOT the Mac I was using for restoration 😝

@cybermaster69 Using a high-quality USB-C (not Thunderbolt) cable is important plugged into the port nearest the ethernet port to avoid restore issues. For example, if you own the Apple Keyboard or Trackpad use the cable that came with it. Also pre-downloading the firmware can help when doing the DFU restore if you have spotty internet connection. Using Mist (https://github.com/ninxsoft/Mist/releases) helps download the correct firmware. And as @pkurt926 says check you have enough space for the firmware/OS on the restore Mac. Luke Miani YouTuber had this issue when he did a restore in the past.

Hello everyone,

has anyone experienced a slight noise after installing the drives, in my case, a total of 8TB?. It sounds like light radio interference, and I only notice it when the room is completely silent. I suspect it's coming from the drive because when I move my head closer to the device and navigate through the macOS menu with the mouse, the sound slightly changes as well.

MS: M3 Ultra.
The drive is functioning properly.

Regards

After three months of silence, Gilles reached out to me a few days ago. This happened only because he refunded me after I did a chargeback, and he accidentally sent me the storage unit.

I did not test his unit. I sent it back as I received it. I have zero understanding of ignoring people and keeping the hardware for three months as a hostage without paying any fees to the clients.

I have nine Mac Studios that we installed with 8TB of storage, and they work great. The seller from China provided very quick support and delivery.

I hope everyone gets their storage or their money back. Good luck to all, and thanks for holding together.

Happy Holidays to all

It seems that he is only promptly communicating to customers when his own money is at risk. You are not the only one in the thread to have reported a similar experience at this point. It is as disappointing as it is remarkable.

Personally I decided to delay getting an upgrade for a while after this whole mess, as it was a "nice to have" for my use case, but I intend to go with the AliExpress order when the time comes to upgrade. Polysoft is shown to be shipping some units now, but they have clearly not fixed their communications and customer service problems, and I am more concerned with this than with the country that the product comes from.

If the NAND kit is going to fail, it will very likely fail early on, so I am less concerned about longevity once it passes early tests. The AliExpress seller has a confirmed track record of being very responsive to customer issues after delivery.

Just got notification from UPS my two 8tb modules are due January 2nd. Order date, I believe, was November 11th.

Hey everyone, hate this is my first post here but I'm getting to wits end with Polysoft and hoping to get some help or maybe a response from Gilles here. I purchased the 8TB kit for my M2 Max Studio back in June of 25. Everyone knows the story of delays etc. I reached out a couple times and got some feedback about it being delayed and asked if I was willing to wait.

Long story short I waited, received my kit on 12/23/25 and proceeded to install. I am not sure if there is a difference in the M1,M2,M3,M4 kits but what I received had an instruction booklet for the M4. Assuming this was just updated literature I proceeded with the install and received this error. "The Mac "Mac" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred. (35). 064E.0023". I installed the drives as labeled with 00 on the left and 01 on the right. I restored my studio with the original drive successfully, reinstalled the drives in the opposite orientation assuming they were labeled incorrectly and received the same error. I tried this back and forth multiple times and the only success I've had was getting more proficient at completing it and successfully restoring with the original drive.

I reached out to Gilles and sent the photo of the error and waited a few days due to the holiday. I have reached out multiple times and I have not gotten a response on this yet. Maybe someone here can assist with me possibly completing the install incorrectly. Any insight is appreciated.

Sounds like faulty drives then.
