I can see Source coming to OS X but the computer hardware platform Apple provides leaves much to be desired.

In all honesty, I'm stuck with my current Macbook with no incentive to replace it.

Well with supposedly new, MBP's, Air's, and Mac Pros coming soon, this could all change. Perhaps we will see a dual launch of Steam client with MBP's..
a member on another thread that says he has inside information (maybe) stated;

there is going to be a media event on the 26th, where the iPad will be launched, along with Steam and the Mac updates to the MBP and Air (and Mac Pro? he didn't say)

The laptop you have is overpowered than what you can use for anyway.
I'll agree that it is overkill for what I need on the road. I'm rather interested in the next M11x revision though.

I just don't have any incentive to replace my Macbook any time soon.

Post Core 2 + 9400M G hardware is its own quagmire that we've had to suffer since last year.

I don't get it, the biggest complaint about OpenGL is it lacks consistent implementation. Why don't they take OpenGL. Rebrand it, push it and requires 100% compliancy for drivers.

Who take it and rebrand it? Apple? From my understanding of the situation OGL was supposed to rival D3D11 by now, but it (basically) doesn't (if you don't count the use of vendor extensions).

What if?

What if one of the major reasons that Valve is bringing Steam to the Mac is this: So that they can establish themselves as the premiere store/source of OSX application and game digital downloads. That this would be a move to preempt Apple in creating the OSX application version of the iTunes store?

Apple doesn't seem to have done anything in this area yet. The door is wide open for Valve.

I've learned (the hard way) not to get my hopes up with this type of news.

Remember Unreal Tournament 3, announced for Mac 2 years ago? Yeah, still MIA.

And wasn't Gears of War also announced for Mac almost 3 years ago? Yeah, still MIA.

And Blizzard - the only game shop equally dedicated to both Macs as PCs (curse you Bungie, you sellouts) - is taking their sweet time with Starcraft 2.

I gave up on Mac gaming long ago and now rely on my PS3 for entertainment.

Let me know when any of these products actually hit the shelves (either physical or virtual).

:(

Bioshock ;)

I don't see Steam becoming an application repository beyond games, servers, and trailers.

They've had more than enough time to become a general purpose application repository under Windows for years. I don't believe the people that use Steam need to have the application installation process hidden/simplified anyways. Not to say that an application repository is a bad thing.

I'd like to add Lumines and Civilization IV as well.

The main complaint of Adobe, Autodesk etc is that OpenGL is different on every graphics card on every operating system. Because Apple implement their own drivers, Windows/Linux let ATi/nVidia define the drivers and Ati/nVidia cripple Radeon/GeForce OpenGL performance/extension sets. If they want one so badly, why don't they just take OpenGL and fine tune it and rebrand it and demand compliance with the software model.

Well, that's barely in beta. Maybe they'll tell us something before the final release

Isn't that the job of the Khronos Group?

The Khronos group only guides development of OpenGL. The OpenGL standard is free to implement however a company wishes. Read the OpenGL 10.6.3 articles to see what I mean.

See DirectX must have 100% compliance with Microsoft's driver standards. Thats why Direct Gmaes always look the same on each computer. If you say play Doom 3 with OpenGL on Windows/Mac and play Doom 3 on Linux. You'll actually see a variation in light processing, shadows, diffusion etc.

This is awesome news. I love Macs but this however could make things interesting since the hardware spec wise (graphics) is not always as cutting edge as it should be.... Regardless, still good news for gamers.

Ooh, I feel so out of the loop with all this excitement and not quite understanding what it's about... it's a gaming company who appears to be expanding to include the Mac platform for its games? Yes, nice, but what a fuss... :)

This is exciting! Will it be possible for Valve to offer Halo as a download cheaper than 70 bucks? Also, with source being ported. Does this mean the Macintosh might get Halo 2? Or possibly even Halo 3?

I am quite excited for Half-Life!

I don't really know anything about Steam, but I have to say that's a clever set of images. I'm not a gamer, but I think I will be keeping my eye on even just the announcements. It certainly gives the impression that they are deadly serious and committed to the Mac, rather than a fly-by-night dabble.

Halo doesn't have anything to do with Valve or even the Source engine

It's a stetch when the majority of hardware runs Core 2 + 9400M G or worse.

Mouse/trackpad acceleration is insignificant.

Uh, input acceleration has absolutely nothing to do with hardware. Mac OS X has native acceleration that cannot be turned off permanently. If Apple wants to cater to the competitive gaming community, they will have to update their input acceleration with an option for "no acceleration."

Mouse acceleration is one of the biggest things in competitive gaming... Please, do not comment on a subject in which you're ignorant on.

It's more than that.
Valve, the creators of Half Life, Team Fortress, Portal (arguably some of the best games ever) also have a digital download service called Steam. Steam is brilliant because its got friends list, groups... basically an IM but tied in with games. So you can be playing a game and invite your friends to join you etc. They're notorious for having many sales a week where games go for stupidly cheap.
It's basically the best online gaming system available for PC. To be coming to Mac is a very, very big deal.

I am absolutely stoked that I can now uninstall Windows! Finally, all my favorite Source games on the Mac! And, of course, Valve will spend lots of time making them look good and function well (they're like the Apple of game companies, really.)

Any thoughts on what games will be available at launch? I'm guessing:

HL2, episode 1, episode 2
Portal
Team Fortress 2
Left 4 Dead 1/2

and probably other source games, but I don't know about Launch really...

Either way, this is AWESOME news. Maybe Steam for iPhone? :p

There is no right and wrong and flippant statements by pc users thinking they are somehow superior because of M&K is frankly immature and rather sad IMO.

Mac users would never make flippant statements about PC users right? And the company they adore would never base their advertising campaign around such a premise right?

Mouse and Keyboard is flat out better for FPS than a joypad in the same way a needle is better for sewing than a crowbar. The difference is equivalent to playing football on astroturf as opposed to a muddy pitch in lashing rain. Joypads are great for platformers and driving games.

I find it highly unlikely that after all this time Valve would port their Source engine, after all it is getting old now. They pretty much tied themselves to DirectX, whereas the original half life was just as good in OpenGL. Most likely it will be just a Steam client, so that cross platform games can be sold through it.
