As teaser campaigns go, that one's genius. I hope the product will live up to the good will that this is all generating.
The recent 'patch' to Portal (discussed here) is quite a good marketing concept chock full of easter eggs and teasers on Portal 2 as well as one hint about a Mac port too.

It's a great game and I find the possibility of working for cake on my Mac exciting. ;)

No kidding! I saw that earlier today. I'm really pumped!

I say prepare for something big...

The old Adobe Garamond font Apple used back in the days of Think Different, the silhouette iPod ads, the Get a Mac, the 1984 ad... Well pretty much all of these features point to key stages in Apple's history, which probably means that this is going to be revolutionary. In this sense, I think they're announcing something huge, and something stable and decided, so I don't think we should be afraid that they'll give up like they did with Half-Life 1 before. This really seems like they're serious about it and that they've thought it through.

I also hope it's not some direct port via Cider but a native rewrite. However, even a Cider port would probably run better than Crossover that I currently use, which is already very good for me. What if Valve quickly want to port all their past games via Cider, and then plan to make all their future games native? Usually companies don't want to go back and spend a lot of time on old software (the Orange Box is quite old now). I would love it if they did do everything natively, but I'm just thinking that they might do this for now, and focus on native coding for future releases. Anyone think this would kinda make sense?

Come on! Please give us a confirmation on the mythical, upgradable Mac mini-tower to play all these great games on.

Guys, it's a bit funny that no one here so far was linking the news about Valve with the upcoming SL 10.6.3

As reported Apple was adding tons of OpenGL enhancements to the beta of the next release. And only now, together with the rumor about valve games coming to the mac, that really gains importance.

My guess is that 10.6.3 will be minimum requirement for Stream on Mac.

For my part i had the original HL and Counterstrike games, but would re-buy them if they are going to work on my MacBook.

Everything points to that. There's a Source Engine powered game (Postal 3) coming out this year, once the engine is ported then theres little in the way of bringing over the AI, textures, and other individual pieces of the games engine.

Good call spotting Apple's historic advert campaigns too. Though, as much as I adore and swear by Steam, I think they're overselling it a bit if all we're getting are Source Engine games, Steam and some Mac-only games. If they've managed to get some devs to build their libraries for OSX then that would be something big.

Perhaps this will include an update to the MBP and MacPro lines with refreshed graphics to utilise the OpenGLness a little better. I hope so.

Holy Hell, this is wonderful. But what's with all the "I hope I don't have to buy the game again?" I'm pretty sure you will have to (and I for one will do it gladly). If a game came out for the PS3, would you expect to get it free because you already have it for the 360?

Awesome. For me, the circle comes to a close. I was on the Day of Defeat mod team back in the day when Valve bought it in -03. Gabe's signature gave me the cash to buy my first PowerBook. Great guys, Valve.

and it looks like their marketing campaign is having a ton of fun with it too. i think steam would do well on the mac - lots of mac users love their machines but sit around and wonder what else to do with them. enter valve, their great library, and you've got a ton of happy campers on both sides.

I wonder if we're talking simultanious release of ALL of the Source based games?

L4D2 would be immense! So would the original, but wow.. If they've done it this seriously and they're all released it will be amazing!

My 8800gs iMac (now "outdated") runs all Valve games like a champ at 1600x resolutions, it's beautiful! Even the 9400m copes pretty well too, and the 9600m plays them nicely! This is great timing for Valve to be on board!

And steam isn't "just a store" (as a couple of people seem to think), or just a social network. It has a unified "achievements" system, like Xbox Live or the PSN, its always going to be a big deal. If you don't game away from the Mac and haven't used these things you can't really understand their significance. Steam bigger deal than any other game related network or store, for now, with obscene usage stats.. Steam coming to the mac is massive news!

HURRAH!

(they'd better not be pulling our leg!) ;)

lol. well, i don't think they're going to charge extra for the mac platform.

we don't have to pay extra to play The Sims, or other cross-platform games.

I dont think that is a valid argument. If this ends up being all ports instead of native, I wont buy them, ill boot camp. They have to play at LEAST as good as windows does.

I've died and gone to heaven!

I became so disgusted with Vista and incredibly long PC boot and turn off times that I've pretty much replaced everything with Macs with SSDs. My ONLY regret was that I was a long-time Steam fan, and was addicted to Team Fortress 2. Even so, its been over a year and a half since I reclaimed by sanity by changing over Macs.

The thought of being able to eat a 'sammich' while wielding a chain-gun again, is just making my toes tingle. This can't happen soon enough for me, and I'm anxious to see how well Steam works on a 27 inch iMac i7.

That is a completely ludicrous analogy. Steam is a cloud-based service. You can actually install those games on a dozen computers, but only under your account. You cannot do anything remotely close to that with different brands of consoles. Since everything is stored in the cloud, I could log into my Steam account on OS X and Valve would immediately know who I am and what games I've already purchased.

I wouldn't mind paying a discounted price for the Mac version, but I have already purchased these games and Valve can verify that without even trying. I'm not going to pay full price for the same games on a different platform. Steam is built to allow for this kind of thing. It's not the same thing as buying a disc at Wal-Mart and loading it in to play.

Why on earth would Apple do that? That would kill all sales of the current Mac Book. Business 101; never let a customer know what they are buying today will be outdated tomorrow.

Teasers might work for a game company, but not for a computer company still try to sell their current line up to customers.

It's not such a strange question. Telltale Games have recently released their latest Monkey Island game for the Mac. And guess what? People who already bought the PC version automatically have a license for the Mac version as well. You can download and unlock it for free if you already bought it for the PC.

The Mac serial for Battlefield 1942 also happens to work for the Windows version as well. The binaries may be different but the serial key system isn't.

I can't imagine Steam charging anyone again for something they already "own". Steam/Valve knows what it's doing.

Really? I didn't know that. Maybe I'm mistaken then. Wouldn't be the first time!
