Valve Teases Upcoming Mac Game Announcement

A single typo discredits anything someone says? Well then I guess no one Earth has anything good to say since we have all made mistakes at some point. Yes, that includes you.

Anyway. The iMac uses a mobile 4850 with 512MB ram. This powers an enormous 2560x1440 monitor. This will be terrible for any decent looking game.

The laptops are perfectly [in]capable of decent gaming, even the 9600m GT. I don't think most Mac people realize what Windows users get to experience on the graphics sides of things.

Apple was using Intel integrated graphics as recently as two years ago if I am not mistaken. There are rumors they will go back to it with Arrandale but I don't think that will happen. The Steam announcement is a cool one, but I'm also left wondering what content they will have for it. Maybe they see this area growing. They would pretty much be the de-facto guys to go to if you want to distribute your Mac game digitally. That is until Apple locks down the OS and forces you to use the iTunes Mac App store. :p

Regardless, the poster you just lambasted was pretty much entirely correct.

It wasn't a typo, he consistently spelled it that way every time he used the word. Misspelling a common word leads you to believe you are dealing with a kid. Enough said.

I use a 2.8 duo MBP at work, and have been testing wine and CXG with Steam.

I can play CSS and HL2 max settings, along with Portal and some others no problem. (RTCW, Dead Space, CS, HL, L4D) Others I turn the res down a little and play max like MW2. They are perfectly fine gaming machines and these new ones coming out ASAP will even further this argument.

Talk about discrediting... have you never heard of the words "you're" or "discrete"? And maybe you could avoid a double-negative sentence that makes no sense. And then in your signature you might want to pluralize Mac Pros correctly.

1. You're right I only used it 2/3 times correctly there, I am not writing an essay. There is a difference between one quick conjugation error, and spelling an everyday word incorrectly through a whole post.
2. The pluralization is a joke I have with a friend at work, relax

Strange joke. Anyway, misspelling words doesn't invalidate the logical content of someone's post as you previously suggested. I also think "non-native speaker" is as likely as "kid." Looking back at his posts I really can't tell, though. What I can tell is that this is a funny quote of his: "also apple did put carp in there systems like the **** intel gma video"... followed by more mentions of carp :)

1. It's spelled gaming not "gameing." Kind of discredits anything you say if you can't even spell the topic.

No it doesn't. It just shows he is human.

2. The iMac comes with a 4850 with 1 GB Vram, not 512mb, get your facts straight.

Its 512 MB. Read carefully.

3. those 1500-1700 dollar laptops have a 9400m up to a 9600m GT, perfectly capable of gaming. Your "on board" statement is false. It doesn't look like your on board with whats going on.

If your definition of perfect gaming is low/medium settings at non native resolution. Of course, it will be 'perfect' for casual/indie and old games so if thats your thing then cool.

by the way, a laptop is not perfect for gaming. Not even Windows laptops for that matter ( from netbooks to Alienware beasts ).

4. Apple has not used Intel video for a long time if not ever. Nvidia and ATI discreet cards have been in them for quite some time.

The word you are looking for is discrete.

Just putting ATI/NVIDIA cards doesn't mean its going to be great. You need to provide top class driver support. Apple has improved in recent years for sure but its a long long long way to go before it has the focused attention of a PC heavy gamer.

The fact that Apple doesn't have a customizable system in the sense a PC is ( which can be assembled by you on your own ) makes them a laughing stock for the PC players and rightly so to an extent.

I would say laptops are just fine for gaming. a 15 inch screen is decent enough size, and an external is easily plugged in.

I am able to play my favorites CSS and HL2 at max settings on my MBP. MW2 at a little lower resolution, but still max.

Sigh, every Mac Rumors topic is the same. The first page or so, people are excited, happy. Then you go to the last page, and the mood changes, everyone is quoting and arguing, I don't like it :(

Oh, and where is the first pic? No pic uses the first dot down the bottom, maybe that will be the pic saying "Steam for Mac, coming soon", or something.

EDIT: Lol, the last picture is the first, my mistake.

How old are CSS and HL2?? PC gaming has moved way beyond those games.

And also, about the misspelling...he could also be a non native english speaker, which means he's way ahead of most of us in being bilingual. Just a guess, and could be wrong, but don't bag on people simply because you disagree.

All Macs are still underpowered (except maybe a pro with a 295) for modern gaming. Yeah, old steam games might be coming to Mac, but the gaming world is sooooo much bigger than valve's source games. It's a step forward but...I still don't see OSX catching up to Window's anytime soon. There is major work on that platform for games, and Valve setting up a content distribution service, and perhaps porting an engine, isn't going to be turning any tides.

Ugh. Gaming facists. You can easily be a serious gamer without the latest gpus . L4D2 runs beautifully on MBPs and many iMacs. Just because a couple of games ask for extreme specs doesn't mean you need them. RE5 is obscenely smooth on a 8800gs based iMac.

A lot of macs are great gaming machines. Many macs run rings around the 360 and PS3. They're good for a lot more than "casual and old" games! Most PC gamers don't have maximum specs either.

The number one online shooter in the world is still, CSS
One of the most revered and most played Single player sagas ever is the Half life series.

They may be a little dated, but are definitely not bad nor too old.

Your right, right now macs aren't the best gaming rigs, but with all these updates about to happen, I would say that's all about to change. Mac pro is at the 1 year anniversary today for it's refresh, and it's highly rumored it will be refreshed with the pros this month.

After this refresh, well have some serious gaming macs out.

Who is a gaming fascist? (wait, should I bring up the spelling thing here? :p ) I barely play any games, and zero PC games. I have worked on some though. I just think it's funny how the porting of a content distribution service somehow means that "windoze" (while we are on the topic what does that even mean? Windows makes you sleepy? I don't get it) has been caught up too. It will take quite a bit more for OSX to even make a dent in the gaming world.

It seems most Mac people don't even realize how far ahead Windows is in that department. Everywhere from engines, and API's, to straight ahead performance. It's an interesting announcement, but playing CSS, HL2, and TF are like what...a decade old?

I think having the actual steam service available is more interesting.

Who cares if they are old, a ton of people still play them. And Left 4 Dead 2 and Team Fortress 2 aren't old, TF2 is still being regularly updated.

Maybe, but L4D2 uses the source engine which first appeared in Counter-strike: Source back in 2004 (almost six years ago). I'd damn well expect it to run beautifully.

I'm glad steam is coming to the mac. It might spur apple to not use graphics cards 1-2 generations behind the PC world.

I've been on Steam since 2003. Now I'm starting to feel very old.

I remember the old adage that we used are Macs for higher endeavors than Windows games. Then comes the mere rumors of Steam on some Apple product. There goes that tired old facade.

No, because Mac's aren't cpu bound, they are gpu bound. And their performance in general really lags behind as it is. You can't overclock an iMac, and the mobile 4850 is trash for a screen of it's size, especially when you couple it with the video ram. The graphics card is a mobile part.

The Mac Pro's are decent gaming machines, but again, you can't overclock it. To get the base Mac Pro with a 295 is what..3 grand? Do you have any idea the absolute monster you can build with 3 grand on the PC side? It would absolutely smear any Mac Pro in existence, since you could overclock it easily to 4ghz and have multiple video cards. Not to mention the RAM choices and capability on Windows over the quad Mac Pros. It's not even close. Then on top of that you would have games available that were released oh...in the last five years? That sort of thing.

The Mac Pro refreshes won't help gaming at all because the main feature is adding two more cores. What game will benefit from 6 cores over having 4? None. I believe there have been benchmarks released where in certain situations, such as multiple cores not mattering, the Lynnfields beat the six core gulftown chips. Not exactly gaming paradise. Also pre order prices are being thrown around at about 1500 dollars for just the CPU. Good luck with that in your Mac Pros, if that becomes the baseline.

The Arrandale Macbooks will do nothing for gaming either. These simply will not have the graphical horsepower, and the screen sizes are tiny anyway. Who wants to play games on a laptop form factor?! For PC style gaming these are underpowered machines. Maybe it works for some people, but I don't think people realize what PC gaming is all about. This will do nothing to sway anyone. Maybe it will reduce some bootcamp installations, but you'd still be getting an inferior and limited experience.

It really doesn't matter to me either way, and in fact it might help me since I am working on some things we could release on the Mac. But that's one reason I can see it for what it is, I actually work on this stuff. I think the most interesting thing is to see if the distribution model will take off (and if it will tick off Apple at all).

Do you know what you're talking about? Apparently not.

1. The new Macbook Pros will supposedly have one of two cards, a 5830 1 GB, or a GT 330m. Both of those are great cards, the ATI better. CPU has little to no bearing on gaming performance.(Within reason) I have an old 2.26 duo gateway with a 9800m GTS that spanks my 2.8 MBP, so with a the new Ix series processors AND some pretty awesome GPU's we'll be able to do some awesome gaming. Maybe not max out Crysis on 16x AA 1920x1200, but very reasonable.
Mac Pros will upgrade to your beloved i7's better GPU's etc.

2. Your money argument is negligible, we are not talking about money, everyone knows that you take a hit to buy a Mac;
You can buy a $8,000 rice rocket and spend another 20k to make it insanely fast, but I would rather spend 40k on a nice BMW with half the speed.

3. Your argument of who wants to game on a laptop is irrelevant. That is your personal opinion. I have been gaming on notebooks for years, love it.
I am in college, and when I come back to my dorm at night, I plug into my 23" external.
Still love notebook gaming. Perfectly comfortable, and fun, on the go, in class, wherever. Just because YOU don't like it says nothing for the rest of the world. I remember gaming on 10" desktop screens. 15" right in from of you is just fine.

FYI, you can overclock a Mac, ZDnet has software out to do so. Thanks

The front side bus is so last decade.

Seriously, the new Macbook Pro's might have a 5830? Wow, that's great news for the iMac's, as I doubt Apple wants the iMac's to be worse than their Laptops.

True, but I'm saying others have the same exact one. I am not alone in thinking notebook gaming is just great.

I am sure Mac users make this argument all the time: Once you have used a Mac you don't want to go back to using a PC. Let me tell you that once you have played on a purpose built gaming PC you will not be so impressed by built in graphics and mobile CPUs.
