Data + voice isn't limited to data "on the phone" it's data period. I tether and talk a LOT, it's part of my business and how I make a living. I do this on many occasions, not just one or three. That means iPhone on Verizon is simply not an option for me. Luckily I'm already on AT&T so I don't need to decide between switching carriers or switching phones.

A lot of people seem to miss this point - tethering + voice is a huge deal for those of us who travel. And being able to use turn-by-turn while on the phone would be great too

Seriously. How often is it necessary to talk and browse the internet at the same time while not within range of a wifi network?

This isn't a huge inconvenience for many people with the exception of those who rely on unsecured networks for their wifi access or those who tether regularly.

In other words.. about 2% of iPhone owners.

"unlimited minutes on the share everything plans? Who cares! No one talks on the phone anyways! I want more data for a reasonable price!"

"What? I can't talk and use facebook at the same time? That's unacceptable!"

Not a verizon issue anymore, this time its an apple issue. Only the iphone 5 doesnt support this. Every other LTE phone allows you to do this.

Well, not every LTE phone. Just the ones that have a separate antennae for voice. The voice calls are not going over LTE.

The iPhone 5 WILL support simultaneous voice and data on Verizon when Verizon rolls out VoLTE (Voice over LTE) in early 2013. It just doesn't support it now.

The theory is that VoLTE was expected at least in major markets by now, which is why Apple didn't put the 3rd antennae in — the iPhone 5 already has two antennas to improve reception, and it would have had to add a third antenna just for Verizon and Sprint phones to give them simultaneous data and calls — which it won't need once VoLTE rolls out.

With the surprises of the new Dock Connector, and inability for Verizon to transmit data+voice simultaneously, I honestly don't know if I want to get the new iPhone 5 anymore. I was super jazzed about the launch, and was willing to shell out $850 for an unsubsidized 64GB phone, but I don't think that's going to be happening until next year with the advent of 5S

Thanks. I didn't know they were rolling it out so soon.

The choice is a little disappointing but I am not sure that I wouldn't have made the same decision. Putting in a second radio would likely have had an adverse effect on battery life and would have taken up space on the logic board. This might have meant a smaller batter since Apple did not seem to want to make the phone wider.

Think of it, there are only 3 wireless providers in the world that use CDMA, 2 of them here in the US and one in Japan. The whole world is on GSM. Why would Apple add another antenna in their base design for a tiny number of users?
Apple REALLY **** the bed on this one. Sorry, Apple defenders. This is the ultimate example of putting form over function. I can't watch any of these iPhone 5 ads with them *orgasming* over the ~design~ without cringing anymore.

I've had AT&T forever and was excited to switch to Verizon tonight. This is a deal breaker.

Yes, I admit simultaneous voice+data is mostly a convenience, but except in one instance- tethering.

With the new Share Everything plans, tethering is, for the first time in like forever, openly permitted on your existing data plan. I was planning on tethering with Verizon's LTE all the time. But now that LTE+voice can't run simultaneously, if I'm tethering and I get a call (or even a text??), I will have to disconnect.

The tethering issue is the biggest reason why this is a dealbreaker. Apple defenders should take note that this is not just an 'inconvenience'. It is a MAJOR annoyance and the reason why I will be sticking with AT&T.

Also, don't forget about apps that run in the background that need an active data connection (while not necessarily always CONSUMING much data). Having those disconnect when you get a call is a major annoyance too.

----------

Australian government got rid of CDMA over a decade back. No country other than US and Japan uses CDMA.
Why? It's the better technology.

T-mobile is lighting up compatible 3G this year and by next year to AT&T compatible LTE.
Check this map of 3G out:

Apple has given me a reason to stay on TMobile. I would have seriously considered a switch to Sprint because of the price point, but not without voice\data. I use this ALL THE TIME. If you never had it, you won't miss it. I really want to get off this Android platform, but what choice do I have???? I'm not unlocking an iPhone and going to 2g service in 2012!!! This is a colossal oversight by Apple and the carriers for not making sure this feature was included.

I like the voice quality of CDMA more than GSM, but that's about it.

Short of that GSM > CDMA.

I dumped Sprint to get off CDMA, and went with AT&T to gain GSM.

Clearly it was the right move. The global standard is the better standard.

Verizon is a bunch of morons. I can't even be on a call and get my mobile boarding pass (which I normally do 2-3 times a week).

The ENTIRE reason I was going to buy the iPhone 5 was to get simultaneous voice and data. I am stuck on Verizon because that is who my company (unfortunately) has a contract with.

That's because other phones use two radios to allow simultaneous voice and data (even SVDO phones). Two radios on at the same time = horrible battery life.

Verizon / Sprint (and AT&T for LTE) won't have simultaneous v&d until Voice over LTE is implemented.

My phone will do this and the battery life is still outstanding. The problem comes when you have to make design sacrifices because being a millimeter thinner is more important then packing a real battery in the device.

LTE VoIP is not being used by anyone yet. It's coming, but it is still going to be a long time until voice is moved over. The solution is either live with the limitation or buy an Android phone that supports this feature.

Even on 3G...

Apple, HA...

Don't tell me it's the size issue, the Razr is extremely thin and it does simul voice/data on 4G just fine!

Yep and the new RAZR MAXX HD that will be released this fall is still quite thin and allows this along with battery life that the iPhone 5 would need two charges to match.

Then why even be here to begin with right? This thread is about iphone.
Since the GSIII is a competitor of the iPhone 5, then it's perfectly valid to compare them. There are many reasons why some people can't just switch to ATT.

Apple: No. But you can have a 5th row of icons instead. That's just as good, right? Static icons, not ones that can change to, say, reflect the actual temperature outside. That's crazy talk.

Apple: "Nobody needs live icons!!"

Did you read any of the stuff posted here? I have to question who the moron is here, the issue isn't Verizon its Apple. The Verizon network is capable of this and has been for a while.

It's funny reading some of these comments about voice and date. Verizon 3G uses two different band frequencies, 1 for voice and 1 for data, (this is why they are the best in voice and data, there's no interfering with each other). AT&T 3G uses the same band frequency for both voice and data (this is why they suck in voice quality, and data speeds to much interfering with other users).

The reason why some of Verizon's phones can do both at the same time is because the manufacture of the phone (which is not Android as many people think, Android is just a Operating System, not a phone) installed extra chips and extra antennas. Why do you think Samsung phone's keep getting BIGGER? Extra chips and extra antennas, means more POWER (bigger batteries) which mean MORE space, which comes down to BIGGER SCREENS to make all this fit and work!!!

Apple is Apple and if Apple doesn't want to add that extra antenna, then they don't have to! Thats why their phones are sleek and sexy and thin and shiny!

Apple ROCKS!
