Yay, another US wireless carrier's network to get bogged down because of iphone data.

So with your comment I take it your on VZW already? What about the maps of the biggest 3G coverage that VZW has, if all there ad's are TRUE than there network should not even flinch?

OR are YOU saying that, just to complain because the iPhone is coming to VZW?

Personally I cannot wait for this, and to also see how many people jump/port back over to VZW.

VZW is supposed to be LTE soon, guess the world will see.

All I know is that I am NOT renewing with AT&T, if I have to give up the iPhone oh well , too many dropped calls and the data speeds are horrible.

The local CORP store says its not them Apple says its AT&T.

I'm included to believe this given the recent Engadget story which claims tipsters from all sorts of disciplines are saying it's coming. I, for one, would be happy if there was a mass ATT > Verizon exodus. More network bandwidth for me.

Amen to that Brother

We will see when Verizon is cluttered with iPhone data whenever that date should come, you will hear everyone complaining about Verizon. Funny the Wall Street Journal quoted Verizon as being ready to handle the iPhone and the Data requirements it consumes, I do not think they have a clue, remember the iPhone is GSM the whole world is on GSM, Verizon is on a really old technology called CDMA/EVDO, it will not be able to take on the iPhone without some outages.

"AT&T’s first-quarter integrated-device growth included 2.7 million iPhone activations, with more than one-third of the activations for customers who were new to AT&T. "

http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=4800&cdvn=news&newsarticleid=30761&mapcode=financial

In other words, Almost a million subscribers switched to AT&T the last quarter and purchased the iPhone.
I would be one of these million subscribers, and have never been happier (was a Verizon customer prior, and my corp phone is a Dirtyberry). Now there are some spotty coverage areas, but for the most part, 99% of where I am, I get complete 3G coverage

CDMA is a technically superior technology. It can handle more users per tower. However, with licensing fees from Qualcomm and its lack of international usage, GSM is the go-to technology.

again I say that Apple does NOT care about "market share" if they did they would govern themselves like a company that cared...people freely tout that MS trumped Apple in the PC vs. Mac wars....and now they're saying "Android trumps iPhone"....if Apple gave a damn wouldn't they follow the historical examples of capitalism and provide increased access to their products? It should be Obvious that Apple does not respond or change it's business strategy based on external factors such as what the competition is doing...

I like how in one post people are technological wizards that have "worked in the wireless industry" then in another post the same person seems to believe he or she is some kind of marketing Guru with all the Business savy in the world...LMAO

Yup, my girlfriend would be another, who was also on Verizon for as long as she's owned a cell phone, and switched to AT&T just to get an iPhone. As much as i've heard complaints, about coverage, i have no problem getting 3G wherever I am, even when i travel.

Not true

This can't be true.

Apple handles all of their marketing and ads. Verizon ads are nothing but "Verizon, Verizon, Verizon;" no value in them what so ever.

If Apple cared about market share, they would license Mobile OSX, and do it for free. Apple cares about profits. I wonder if Google has made more from search's on Android than Apple has made from iPhone sales.

Isnt that EXACTLY what the rumors of going to more carriers would be doing? Increasing access? How about when the Apple made iTunes for Windows to sell more iPods?

And again, if Apple didn't care about market share, why do they brag about their iPod and iPhone dominance every press event?

What is the point of this macrumors? Not even 4 posts down there is a story about ATT exclusivity thought 2010 or something...

We have no idea what the terms of that contract are. It could have been voided for any number of reasons.

Yet you do nothing to refute the points others have made, and go on to point out that the idea of people on here being experts is ridiculous.

LOL, do you even know the technology advantages CDMA has over GSM? My lord, it's almost as if everyone on this board is a network engineer.

Read up before you comment on "Verizon's really old technology."

I don’t have a horse in the race regarding any of the particular providers, but let’s say the iPhone goes to the big four providers:

The bandwidth burden will be spread more evenly across four networks, thus helping AT&T customers immensely, and I don’t think it will likely overburden any particular one of them.

Competition between the four may result in a decrease in plan prices.

Also, that statement that 5 years is 5 years is tautological. Apple dropping revenue sharing with AT&T and giving them the iPad may have given Apple an early out.

CDMA separates their voice and data traffic. Worst case scenario on a Verizon network overload would be slow download speeds. Unless all those iPhone users are also very big talkers thanks to the nature of CDMA it won't be a big problem.

Be interesting to see if/how they work around the whole "Can't do data and voice at the same time over EV-DO", especially since Apple specifically touted that "feature" of the iPhone in one of the recent ad campaigns. I'd have to imagine that it would have to be a hybrid CDMA and LTE device.

it probably won't be able to do voice and data at the same time

I keep seeing people say "BS Apple does its own advertising."

But you are basing it on a time when there was one iPhone on one network. When the iPhone is available on more than one network, don't you think the networks are going to want to toute about how theirs is better for the iPhone than the other? Apple wont care, they get paid either way, but once Verizon gets an iPhone, don't you think they are going to want to scream that from the mountain tops? Let everyone know that the "best network" has the "best phone?" I mean, the CEO said, out right, that he wanted the iPhone on his network. Once he gets it, don't you think he would want to say "HAHAHA! WE GOT IT! LOOK AT IT, ITS AWESOME!"

Also, do you really think Apple is going to do the work on Verizon's website? On their display boards in store or Verizon specific ads? Of course not, like I said, Apple wont care, they get money either way.

It is also more cost effective. Apple doesn't have to pay for advertising for the iPhone and provider specific ads that toute their various advantages. They just advertise the iPhone, let the networks advertise themselves.

Finally, I have no doubt in my mind that this agency will use the branding that Apple has created and build on that. This doesn't mean a whole new look, just new additions.

"Historically, Crunchgear has been an unreliable source of Apple-related rumors"
So that makes it front page worthy???

...MacRumors has to eat, so I'm assuming they put stuff up on the front page that they know will generate hits....not based upon "reliablility".....as this is clearly NOT GOING TO HAPPEN this year with Verizon.

iPad 3G on ATT; Apple holding off ATT and giving them an incentive to allow them to have a new revolutionary product + their GSM iPhone while making plans with VZ to tout this new iPhone for their network.

So give it a year or more and VZ may very well be able to carry the iPad.

I think its a bit of a haggle and deal situation with ATT / Apple, ATT knows alot of people want it on Verizon and know alot still want it on their network, so i think apple is fending off the threat of alot of people leaving att and its partnership by offering its exclusivity of the iPad on their network also a bit of a trial and error.
VZ may very well get its own handset and i dont see it being a crapped down or dumbed down iphone..apple simply just wouldnt do that.

Theyd probably make 2 versions of the iphone, they made two versions of the ipad Wifi only and 3g capable.

Well see in a bout 3-4 weeks whats up at WWDC.

Regardless of what happens something good is bound to happen this summer :D

That wouldn't stop me from getting an iPhone.

I want an iPhone, but there is NO WAY I will have AT&T as a carrier.
