I just talked to a close friend who works at a local VZW call center. No one in the call center is allowed to take a vacation day this coming Tuesday, 1.11.11. They also just took an "Iconic Phone Launch" training module. It explains that there is a high likelyhood of back ordering and the correct procedure to handle such a situation.

He goes on to say just about everyone he works with, from other call center employees, to directors and managers are saying they are getting the iPhone. Word in the office is an announcement on Sunday with the phone shipping on Tuesday of this week. Or an announcement on Tuesday with the phone shipping later this month.

More rumors, but he still interesting.

I don't understand this. They could offer a new one in 4 months. Technology evolves.everyone understands this. Plus 2 releases(one for each network) would allow then the chance to almost stay up with demand and not have backorders.

My point is that they're not going to 1) Release a phone for 4 months, then scrap the manufacturing lines and write off all of the design time / labor. 2) Release a phone to much fanfare on VZ, only to trump it with a better phone on AT&T in 4 months.

I saw someone the other day make a joke about this being the year of the iphone 4s (essentially a speed bump, but little else, much like the 3gs). I'm completely convinced they're right.

And no, this isn't an invitation for a flame war over whether the 3gs was an important improvement or not- simply that the benefit was incremental, not disruptive in any way.

not this s*** again?

just release the damn thing and put an end to it so we can read something decent! Mind you, I guess it'll just turn to the iPhone 5 then

A personal anecdote/tirade

I for one, would rather have a slower, reliable connection, rather than one that fluctuates between me having 3G and not, causing me to be unable to use my device as I would like. Seriously, I can be standing still in my breakroom at work and have 3G one second and nothing the next. It's VERY frustrating. As is having 3 bars of coverage, tapping a contact to call, raising the phone to my ear,(in my right hand no less) and having the dreaded call failed tone in my ear. It's just ridiculous.
In my area(northern Kentucky), Verizon is THE network. My friends with their DROID phones never complain about having calls drop, have 3G where I do not and overall are very satisfied with service. I am not dissatisfied with the iPhone, I am dissatisfied with AT&T's service, pretty much everywhere I usually go(Cincinnati, Gatlinburg, ETC...)
Also, I have WiFi at home and usually when I'm on the phone I'm not using data. Often all data is good for when I'm on the phone is some Facebook update coming through that could have waited. Or a text message from someone I'm now talking to because I hadn't heard from them about plans we had.
I can't wait to make the jump to Verizon, and if need be use a droidphone, or 4G phone to make it happen.

I agree it will be a speed bump. I expect them to update the verizon and AT&T phone in June. iPhone 4 on verizon for 4 months...then then 4S in June on both.

Totally agree, switching to Verizon would be a step backwards... without multitasking while on a call

Why do people around here reference this over and over?

Verizon has millions... yes, millions of smart phone users for whom this is a non-issue. Is it important to you? Cool - no one cares.

Oh and by the way, Verizon's 3G network is can currently support simultaneous voice and data (device specific with the proper hardware).

Just got off the phone with a friend, who is a low level grunt at a local VZW retail store. The are blacked out a few days this week, a few next week, and then again in February 3rd -> 6th.

Whatever is a big deal, their DM tried to recall one of the store managers from his honeymoon.

Why would Apple make a big deal for selling Verizon Iphone when most of the people already have an Iphone, I don't see the big deal, The Ipad 2 would make more sence.

Because many of us on the VZ network would love to have the Iphone and were unwilling to switch to AT&T for a variety of reasons.

Verizon currently has world phones that make use of a SIM card. The recently leaked video and pictures of the newest iPhone seemed to show a SIM card slot which led a lot of people to dismiss it as a possible Verizon iPhone. Isn't it possible that the housing was indeed a Verizon iPhone and the slot is for inserting a SIM card if you plan to travel overseas. Seem like a pretty big reach to me but are there any engineers that can speak to this? Is it really that simple to create a dual CDMA/GSM phone and all you have to do is insert a SIM card and you are good to go on international networks?

If this new phone has updated hardware to deal with the reception issue (as the leaked pics point out), when will this new phone be available in the UK?
The leaked photos make me believe that this imminent new handset is actually for T-Mobile USA.

The antenna configuration has been slightly tweaked, and yet there is still a slot for a SIM card (which would not have any use on a CDMA handset for Verizon or Sprint).

T-Mobile USA (along with Wind Mobile in Canada) uses the AWS band (1700 & 2100MHz) for 3G data because they don't have any allocated frequencies in the standard UTMS frequency bands (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz). This modified antenna could be optimized for the AWS band.

If that is indeed the case, there is no reason to believe that the new handset would provide any performance gain for people not using those frequencies (e.g., Europeans).

I think the more curious thing to a Verizon iPhone launch is how many people will be breaking their contracts with AT&T to switch?

My AT&T service isn't nearly as bad as some report. Sure, I get the occasional dropped call and 3G reception in my home isn't as good as one would expect living in a large metropolitan area, but I've never felt like I've had a shoddy product. I'll take a serious look at Verizon when my AT&T contract is up at the end of June, but I'm thinking that Verizon is not worth the early termination fee.

YMMV should be the mantra of any discussion of carrier.

i know people who's spouses work for Verizon, and that week they are on total lock down. no one is allowed to leave the office

I wish I could donate my rollover minutes to someone. I'm on a family plan with 700 minutes (the lowest minutes available for a family plan I believe) and still rack them up quickly and will never ever use them. Utterly useless to me.

There's a 550 plan. My wife and I used to be on the 700 but were able to drop down to 550 because of rollover minutes. So, there you go... not useless as you could be saving money.

Until that one month you go over :) Not a big deal, but a real nice feature as I never think about minutes with so many in the minute bank now. In old days every month I loosely kept track of how much I used my phone on Sprint, now I don't care even though I am on the lowest AT&T minute plan.

I am happy with AT&T for the most part, and likely would not consider switching at least until my contract is up in 2012 (and then only if there's a monetary reason to do so, other than being able to get free calls with my Dad), but I may be moving to an area that reportedly has horrible AT&T service, though the coverage map says otherwise. So I'm glad I will at least have the option if I move there and find that I can't use my iPhone.

But my question is how far in advance would Apple/Verizon make an announcement? It seems to me that there's zero chance that they will announce and release on the same day. The rumors above of Verizon blocking out vacation next week makes it sound like they will announce it then, but does Apple have any events planned for next Tuesday? Would they really do this with so little fanfare? I would expect one of their usual big media events to make the announcement, and they would need more than a couple of days notice, wouldn't they?

Not while you're reading macRUMORS.com. Perhaps you were looking for macfacts.com?

It's one thing to hear a new rumor or an update on a rumor. I'm fine with that. However, IMO, MacRumors posts "iPhone on Verizon" too frequently. Seems like MR makes a front page thing for every time someone says "Oh, I have a friend on the inside who told me the iPhone's coming next month" or Mac news site 1 posting this rumor, then Mac News Site 2 reporting that Site 1 reports it, then News Site 3 reporting Site 2 is reporting it & then Site 1 saying Site 3 is reporting it; those kinds of circular announcements.

Now if there is some new real, solid evidence that seems to indicate iPhone on Verizon like an FCC filing, I'll be OK with that. But if it's just another site with "reputable sources" saying iPhones on Verizon come next month or whatever, I don't find that newsworthy enough to put it up.

Feb 3: "Verizon is proud to announce the Droid 3! Now available at all Apple stores around the U.S.!"

I don't understand why it's so difficult for some to believe that iPhone will eventually be offered in a CDMA version.. especially considering it's been widely disclosed that Verizon was Steve Jobs first pick to carry the iPhone initially, but both companies were unable to iron out a mutually acceptable agreement.

AT&T has awful coverage in my area.. and at my home and many of the places I go, no signal at all. None.

Not 3G.. not EDGE.. not anything.

Verizon, on the other hand, works everywhere I go.

As far as network resources are concerned, go have a look in a Verizon Wireless store. It's not like Verizon users are all using Motorola flip phones from the last century.

Are we expected to believe that all these Windows Mobile and Android powered phones running smoothly on Verizon somehow are less 'stressful' on the network than an iPhone?

Come on.

And Verizon nickle and dimes people? Maybe in the past.

My Palm Pre was free with a two year activation, and for $99 a month I have unlimited data on the phone, and 5GB a month of data transfer using it as a mobile hot spot for up to 5 devices simultaneously.

I'm not a network fanboy.. i'm an iPhone fanboy.

I could care less what network iPhone runs on, as long as it works where I go.

How is getting the dates possibly pinned down not new news? Yeah, we knew about the vacation limits already, but this is the first I've seen about Feb 3-6 on MacRumors.

BGR Staff meeting:

"Apple is blacking out vacations in early Feb!" BG#1

"Maybe it is for the new iPad we have been seeing leaks about." BG#2

"Yeah... but lets run a story saying 'it COULD' be a Verizon iPhone!" -BG#1

"But I think it would more likely news about the iPad, since it came out this time last year." -BG#2

"No... think about all of the hits our blog will get!" -BG#1

Really? Ok cool, I will switch. Saving money is always a good thing. Thanks for that!

You have no idea what you're talking about. They wouldn't scrap the lines. In case you haven't forgotten, they continue to sell the old model for a cheaper price.
