Maybe the new Verizon model will come out every January? Think of all the money that would be made between Apple, AT&T, and Verizon off all the crazy people who would switch between Verizon and AT&T every six months to get the newest model.

You could make a killing on early termination fees. Either that or you would have folks walking around with 2 iPhones (one Verizon and one AT&T). You would not be considered a true Apple Fan unless you had one of each.

Good news to see. I hate AT&T and refuse to switch to that carrier just for the iphone. Verizon FTW.

So you hate AT&T, but you haven't used them. How does one get to hate something they've never truely experienced. Sounds like you've been drinking too much of Verizon's cool-aid.

I've been on Verizon the past 20 years. I'm lucky if I get more than 1 bar, anywhere. Just ordered a new iPhone and am anxious to switch. My brothers have been using AT&T since the first iPhone came out, and have nothing but praise for it's operation and service.

Since you HATE AT&T so much, there's no need for you to fork out the big bucks for an iPhone, as if you were actually planning to come up with the bucks for one.

Why would you stay with a carrier for 20 years if you've never gotten great service?

I've heard horror stories regarding AT&T's service. Just search this forum if you don't believe me. I've never had any problems getting Verizon's service no matter where i'm at in the country from the middle of nowhere in Utah to the mountains in Vermont. Oh and I am drinking the Verizon Kool-aid which tastes awesome by the way. :D

Makes sense

So that's why ATT allowed anyone in 2010 to upgrade even if they not eligible. Apple announced iPhone in jan 2007, not sure if that's when the contract started.
If apple is making CDMA cellphone, they might as well put that into iPad. Wouldn't be surprised if next iPad had that option as well.

Not really good news for the 1.7 million iPhone 4 buyers - they're locked in for a full two years.

You don't suppose AT&T knew this was coming and tried to get everyone locked up in a long term contract.

I think that's exactly what happened. That's why they offered the 6 months advance on contract renewal to get subsidized handsets.

Having said that, I get good reception in DC and I can't remember dropping any calls on my iPhone in normal usage (not counting going into subway tunnels, etc.).

Verizon has a faster network right now, but their customer service is horrendous and they are pathological liars. I will stick with AT&T until they roll out 4G.

I kind of like the idea. not that im going to verizon because where i live i get good service on att. Just it will help clear up some of att's network during high usage time so my data isnt slow at times.

it's a shame ATT had nearly four years to get their network up to speed with Verizon's or at the very least, fix their image that their network was just as strong. I don't think they've done either.

it will be interesting to see if Verizon is any better than AT&T when they have to deal with the volume of traffic used by iPhones.

upgrade to late

Good. Now AT&T will see that they should have offered upgrades to people who bought the 3GS on release day. My upgrade date is February 2011, hopefully, if this rumor turns out to be true I'll have more options. I also think that if the rumor is true, AT&T will "decide" to push upgrade dates beyond the arbitrary Dec 2010 date.

Not to mention the, as 'I'm a PC' would say, "the many, many tens of dozens" of HTC 'EVO's' and Motorola "Droid" users 'locked up' with their iPhone wannabes!

If this rumor IS indeed true...

I think think that would be great but unless they fix the problems with the phone, I don't care what carrier you use, the phone is worse less.

Here comes the FED

Hope the SEC investigates these rumor-churns that seems to do nothing else but manipulate the price of Verizon's stock than actually - you know - result in an iPhone for Verizon. They've been putting out false flags for 3 years now.

Only Madoff could run a game as long as Verizon is.

all i know is that whenever i'm at a ball game or something and i'm on my droid verizon phone, it'll blow through the web still. while my brothers iphone will slow to a crawl. so yea, i think they can handle it.

It's really going to be hillarious. All these people complaining that there is no iPhone for Verizon, and refusing to switch to AT&T because the service sucks. In reality in Mass, Maine, and NY where I use the phone most, I have better service than Verizon.

Seriously though, people without iPhones on Verizon when the "Verizon iPhone" comes out are going to cry because their network is going to blow.

I'm sitting in Maine right now with an iPhone telling me "No Service." I literally have to press up against a window in order to make a phonecall around here. Step two feet inside? Nothing.

I don't have to worry about dropped calls in Maine, because half the time I don't even get the chance to make a phone call.

The EVO and Droid aren't really iPhone wannabes.

The only way I will believe this is if verizon or apple confirms it or I way the various sources and how they got this info. Just because AT&T loose there contract doesn't mean it auto-goes to verizion. For apple it just might mean t-mobile (a carrier that uses sim cards GSM I think it's called). They would have to make the modle for verizons network and have to go through many and various negotiating. Thera is many steps to this not just that AT&T is loosing there contract, and some source says so. Come on people

If you guess enough times you will eventually get it right.

Stating the same rumor over and over is a good way to drum up traffic for your site...

But this time they REALLY mean it.

In all seriousness, it probably will happen sometime within the next year. Now if I were an analyst I would say, "my sources have told me..."

I just don't understand the hate on AT&T.

I feel like a group of notable people ripped on the network, and thousands other just joined the bandwagon and spread the rumor. AT&T's service is used by me, my family, and all of my girlfriend's family and our network is great.

Are people just gossiping hate, with no real experience with the network? I think so.

Given Apple's fixation on secrecy it seems Verizon is verifying through action Apple made the right decision all along to go with a company capable of keeping secrets until launch day: AT&T.

Hmmmm. 1-11. CDMA or LTE? That is the question.

Rocketman

Barclays analyst said his 'checks' suggest a CDMA phone with LTE support.

Launched at CES

So if the iPhone is unveiled for Verizon in January, that means all those that flock to it will be buying the iPhone 4 (at that time a 7 month old phone) when a new iPhone will be available in June/July for AT&T. Wonder how this'll play out.

Wasn't the person you were quoting wondering what would happen if Verizon got the iPhone and a bunch of new iPhone users were on the network?

How does your observation reflect this situation?

Oh my! Another Verizon iPhone rumor. I wish big red would get it already just so I don't have to hear about it anymore.
