I can tell you it will happen. After all my bitching and moaning about ATnT crappy service I switched from Verizon to ATnT anyway just to get the iPhone. Its just my luck..so it will happen.

Verizon and AT&T on single chip

Anyone else remember reading an article about Qualcomm developing a cellular chip that is compatible with both Verizon and AT&T networks? Is it possible we'll see a single phone that is capable of running on any network? Such portability would be wonderful.

Good Lord....

How many times does it take for this to be announced/predicted before it isn't news anymore.

I guess a second carrier is a good start, but if it's going to be CDMA why not Sprint as well?

I'd like to not leave Sprint and not pay Verizons higher fees for the same service I have now...

And like many townfolk around my area, I could careless if ATT gets a phone from NASA that can call Mars. Their network has more holes than swiss cheese. A phone is only as good as its network.

Agreed. But since I seem to be one of the few (?) people that doesn't have problems with either network, I'm fortunate to be able to choose which company gets my business. And based on my personal experiences, the (current) winner for me is ATT.

To borrow a line that has been said by many people before me, I hope VZW gets the iPhone so that all the ATT haters, as well as people like yourself, who have legitimate issues with their network in your area, can switch to VZW. That way, you can enjoy a kick ass device on a network that doesn't suck for you. :D

Then wait and see. Nobody knows anything for sure at this point. By Q1 2011 we'll have a much clearer idea. Maybe Sprint won't be left out, for instance.

I'm *fairly* happy with AT&T... yes their service sucks- especially in some well populated areas but I've had fewer and fewer problems with the iPhone 4. If Verizon can take the workload off the AT&T network, I'm all for it but I wouldn't switch until they're cheaper or offer significantly better services like faster/more reliable data... basically, if the rumors are true- I'll have about 17 months on my AT&T contract to wait and see what all the 'switchers' experiences are.

Yea, WSJ sure is reputable now.

Quoting the same story four times doesn't - to me - make it appear they predicted this four times. They only predicted it once, in March. You've quoted four OTHER articles about the WSJ articles. You've made your point.

Possible but not likely. There are some so-called "WORLD" phones sold by Verizon and Sprint which have both radios and a SIM embedded into the phone for roaming on GSM networks abroad but the main functionality of the phone defaults to and is programmed for the CDMA carrier it is sold under.

iPhones are not specifically programmed anymore for a specific carrier but rather they are entered into the Apple database as either locked into a carrier or unlocked and this is determined when you activate a phone with a SIM in iTunes. If your iPhone is registered as unlocked, it will be unlocked when activated and if it is registered as locked into a carrier, it will be locked when activated.

Apple would have to create a specific run for Verizon even if they had access to a hybrid GSM/CDMA chip because Verizon phones are preprogrammed for Verizon as CDMA2000 does not use CSIM sim cards like the CDMA carriers in Asia so the phones come prelocked into a carrier from the factory and default to CDMA whenever possible.

One last thing to consider is that I'm pretty sure that all of the existing CDMA/GSM hybrid phones and chips do not support the same range of frequencies as the iPhone supports meaning that you would likely not be able to use such a phone in places like Japan like the current iPhones if it was originally bought in North America.

WSJ has been wrong so many times now in their past predictions that I no longer find them credible.

I'll believe it when I see it. With that said, I highly doubt there will be a Verizon iPhone anytime soon. If you want or need to choose Verizon as your cell carrier then you might as well just get a Droid phone and call it good. No reason to wait on something that will probably never happen. I'm glad that I didn't wait.

When I see it for myself that Verizon is selling an iPhone device, then and only then will I believe it.

Personally I love AT&T just moved from Verizon and will never look back, so for me doesn't matter but for those wishing for a Miracle, good luck.

I have a dream, where posts about the iPhone coming to Verizon are no more....

AMEN to that! Seriously.

I don't even really care about all the peripheral concerns people express about this, e.g., how a Verizon iPhone will change the competition with Android or how it will affect AT&T or how many Verizon users are holding out.

Really, I don't care about any of that. But I would LOVE to see an end to the stream of "VZ iPhone any day now" stories. It's gotten so old, so fast.

Timing

My Verizon contract ends May 2011. This would seem like good timing to see how the iPhone does at Verizon IF it is released in the projected timeframe.

I agree. I will wait til I see actual proof til I believe it. When it does happen I will be glad to see the At&t haters migrate over to Verizon so I can stop hearing them complain. At&t works for me and the iPhone does everything I need it to do. It amazes me how people can stick with a provider just for a phone just to be unhappy because their service sucks.

I can't give you any insights. But I think Apple is the one that has to make that announcement.

These statements make me thing 1 of 3 things is going on here:

1) Verizon is getting the iPhone but they've agreed to let Apple announce it so they have to divert the question
2) Verizon and Apple are in negotiations and Verizon is trying to take a strong negotiating position
3) Apple is making a CDMA iPhone, but it may be for China and Verizon is still just leaving the door open for the possibility

You sir, are a lucky man :D

Yup, that's all I want. And I don't hate ATT, it's just like you said, I need a network with no issues.

GOD! Screw you Wall Street Journal!!! You sound like a 12 year old.

Whatever.

You know what I'd like to hear about? Apple's plans for OS X v. 10.7. That would be an actual Mac rumor.

Agreed!

Has wsj ever been right?
of course! The Mayans predicted 9/11. even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Heard it. They said it would be by december, now it's by early next year. This has been said before, it's not true and at this time I don't believe Apple has any interest in getting in bed with a carrier that demands it's branding all over their phones.

They've got a nice deal with AT&T to keep the iPhone looking like an Apple device, not a carrier device.
Verizon isn't demanding there logo on the the iphone, they are polishing apples shoes to make a deal with them.

but but but but but but will they get a white one? with they still have the antenna issue? ;) ;) ;)
there is no issue. iphone 4 drops less calls than the iphone 3gs, so unless the iphone 3gs has an antenna issue. than the iphone 4 has no antenna issue.

If Verizon were the only mobile phone carrier in existence, there would be no iphone.

BULL ****!

.
.
.

Now I really don't know what I am talking about but....
as we all know there have been these rumors since the first iphone launched.
but in the past 3 months!!! there have been 31 posts on macrumors pointing to a december mass production of a verizon iphone, and a january or early 2011 launch.
this is the 31st post!!!!! I kept track since i have no life.
now I am not saying that once you get enough rumors it makes it true or any more likely, but this does make sense, january is 6 months after iphone 4 launched on at&t, and 6 months june when the next iphone will most likely be launched. Verizon has asked apple for the iphone, and is prepared for it, and will do anything for it, even if it means less branding.

now thats just what I think because I am optimistic, gullible, and i have been waiting for verizon iphone for several months.

Call me dumb, but doesnt Apple and Att have a 5 year agreement???
That means the contract expires in 2012..

Id love to see a Verizon CDMA Iphone, it should be really cool... horrible battery life, no data while using a voice call etc..

The major upside would be all the ATT defectors would help ease the burden on the network.
