Guys think about this, The white iPhones got delayed til’ 2011 and now this!? It's obvious Apple is preparing one of the biggest iPhone launchces ever, for any kind of phone. This will follow through, d@mn near I hope so. [Yeah kind of a fanboy, but whatevs]

Sorry if I missed something but when did Apple say the white iPhone was delayed til 2011?

This seems more likely than not by now-

1. WSJ is not hedging at all, which is different than typical rumors. It may not be 100% but they are pretty certain themselves.

2. With Android market share growing, I think this move is definitely necessary for Apple. It will also keep them ahead of Microsoft, who will end up late to CDMA as well.

Well why not?
It's not like the phone will work on many/any non-Verizon networks so I can see it having their logo above the Apple one on the back as well.
If you believe that then I have an awesome browser to sell you. It's called Firefox and I'm only charging 9.99 for it. Interested?

If Apple did not create AT&T branded iPhones then what makes you think they would make a branded iPhone for Verizon this late in the game? Seriously dude, Verizon is not as big a deal like you try to make it out to be. The days of branded phones with crapware is coming to an end and Apple is leading the way.

Apple makes only one run of iPhones for all carriers around the world and then allocates IMEI numbers in a database to shipments per carrier which demand SIM locks.

Call me dumb, but doesnt Apple and Att have a 5 year agreement???
That means the contract expires in 2012..

Id love to see a Verizon CDMA Iphone, it should be really cool... horrible battery life, no data while using a voice call etc..

The major upside would be all the ATT defectors would help ease the burden on the network.

Hmm...your delusional. Verizon already has more customers than ATT anyways. ATT burden isn't gonna change if they cant handle what they have now. Now, Verizon may develop a burden if they don't have one already. Just don't expect Att's burden to ease if they got problems already and don't even have as many as Verizon's. Period.

Since it isn't out yet, because of light escaping and antenna craziness, I believe that is the best sensible option to do. And also the most lucrative, think about it early this year was a big hit and they can make next year 2011 even better.

Given the LTE specifics that were announced today. . .

I'd say that a Verizon iPhone will be announced six weeks either side of Christmas.

Wouldn't it be quite the story if the iPhone is the first LTE smartphone available on Verizon? I checked my address just now on VZW's site and it says that LTE is available now where I live (not soon.) Interestingly enough, there is not a single LTE device currently available. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if Steve has negotiated a deal to make the iPhone the first LTE smartphone available to Verizon subscribers.

At the very least, I could see them giving Apple the liberty to make the first announcement about having an LTE smartphone on Verizon. It seems very odd that this new technology will be launched in several major cities by the end of this year and yet there's not a single device available now that supports it -- unless VZW and Apple are cooking up an event that will happen sooner rather than later.

Possible but not likely. There are some so-called "WORLD" phones sold by Verizon and Sprint which have both radios and a SIM embedded into the phone for roaming on GSM networks abroad but the main functionality of the phone defaults to and is programmed for the CDMA carrier it is sold under.

World phones have simple settings where the user enables:
  • Automatic (connects to best network), or
  • CDMA only, or
  • GSM/UMTS only.

As for the SIM, it's in a regular SIM socket.

And, unlike ATT with the iPhone, Verizon will unlock the GSM side so owners can use overseas SIMS if they wish.

Apple would have to create a specific run for Verizon even if they had access to a hybrid GSM/CDMA chip ...

Apple could easily do the same thing they do now, and lock the CDMA or GSM side to anyone they want, during activation.

One last thing to consider is that I'm pretty sure that all of the existing CDMA/GSM hybrid phones and chips do not support the same range of frequencies as the iPhone supports meaning that you would likely not be able to use such a phone in places like Japan like the current iPhones if it was originally bought in North America.

Most World phones are quad-band GSM (which means they'll work anywhere). The UMTS-3G radio is usually the 2100 band, so 3G is also available in most of the world (except the USA). Some World phones even support HSDPA.

Apple would have to create a specific run for Verizon even if they had access to a hybrid GSM/CDMA chip because Verizon phones are preprogrammed for Verizon as CDMA2000 does not use CSIM sim cards like the CDMA carriers in Asia so the phones come prelocked into a carrier from the factory and default to CDMA whenever possible.

Here's the press release I was referring to: http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-71864639.html

My understanding on this subject is almost nill so does this change your answer or support it?

Heard it. They said it would be by december, now it's by early next year. This has been said before, it's not true and at this time I don't believe Apple has any interest in getting in bed with a carrier that demands it's branding all over their phones.

They've got a nice deal with AT&T to keep the iPhone looking like an Apple device, not a carrier device.

Oh many theories, this has a real ring of truth to it...:apple:

Hmm... so... no real confirmation in all of this that Verizon will actually be carrying the thing, but rather simply that Apple is making a CDMA iPhone? There's a difference between the two, though I wonder how interested they'd be in doing such a thing if not releasing for Verizon.

So this is something you came up with on your own?

I wish the iPhone would get released on VZW so we can move on to the entertaining rumors. This has come up so many times it's kind of annoying.

If you get bored, head on over to the iPad forum where they're talking about a 7" iPad before Christmas. :D

And this iPhone will have a Verizon "tick" logo on the home button, and "vPhone" on the back, right?

And "Apps" will be Verizon's "App Store" ? Yeah, right.

Since I stopped believing any of them, I've been batting 1.000.

Just like the guy falling from a cliff thinks "so far, so good."

And this iPhone will have a Verizon "tick" logo on the home button, and "vPhone" on the back, right?

And "Apps" will be Verizon's "App Store" ? Yeah, right.

Exactly the correct reaction: "Yeah, right," because that won't happen.

Why do ppl keep saying this? Checked out the latest Verizon smartphones lately?

This dead horse again?

Seriously, I normally don't like getting into discussions about a Verizon iPhone or do I post a comment on a thread like this but enough is enough. How often does this hydra keep having to grow a new head?

Verizon iPhone

Must be a slow news day at the WSJ if they're dredging this old rumor up again...
