On AT&T you pay $25 for two gigs and then you pay $20 more to tether out of the SAME TWO GIGS.

That's how it's better. On Verizon you have unlimited data on the device itself and then you pay for two gigs for your hotspot. You're not paying twice for the same bucket of data.

AT&T charges $25 per month for my 2 gb iPad 3g service. Goodbye AT&T, Verizon here I come, saving $5 per month by using the phone for a hot spot... not as convenient, though... about 90% of the time i'm on wifi anyway.

Maybe this will start a nice price war? Doubtful...

They all charge ridiculous amounts. So far only one lets you make actual phone calls.
I never had any problems making phone calls when visiting from Canada in any of the following cities: Honolulu, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Seattle.

It might be different for all I know in other parts of LA but I had reception on my iPhone on the Universal back lot, Hollywood and in the Beverly Hills area.

Having to pay for stuff sucks. At&t and Verizon have spent billions building out their networks. How dare they ask us to pay for it. Frankly, I wouldn't want to be on a network that offered unlimited data -- too much opportunity for some leacher to soak up bandwidth and not leave any for me. I doubt At&t and Verizon will even be able to pay back the money they borrowed for the network build-out, let alone earn some type of obscene profits from us.

For those complaining, why don't you suggest a pricing scheme that will allow the networks to pay back their creditors AND satisfy you.

Personally, I'd like a pay-per-byte plan and eliminate double-dipping, but the networks think that would bring in less revenue...honestly, I think the networks are pretty much screwed regardless.

No, on CDMA phones if someone calls you during a data transfer it goes automatically to voicemail.

How can apple even let Verizon sell the iphone with this type of network. I've had an Iphone since September of 2007, i had the 1st gen & now the iphone4. Let me tell you you will use voice & data concurently all the time. You know how many times during a call someone has asked me "did you get my email" or "what time is ______ open till" or "what movies are playing tonight"...........

Seriously i live in Central NJ, i've had AT&T since it was cellular one in 98'. Go with the AT&T iPhone, theres nothing smart about a smartphone that can't do voice & data. For me that's the end of the discussion right there. Both plans are gonna cost you around a $100 month, both networks will give you pretty good call quality. If i have 2 dropped calls a month thats alot & usually its in places where cell signal is limited across carriers. I can't think of 1 tangible benefit that Verizon has over AT&T other than this alleged superior network that in my experience is a total myth.

By a CDMA iphone with verizon so that what your either stuck with CDMA or you dish probably $400 next year to upgrade to the LTE version? Because you won't be eligible for upgrade pricing till what Feb of 2013???

I'm an apple fanboy, for me its about the phone not the carrier, but if you go with verizon your making a mistake. MA Bell isn't exactly cutting edge.......

The original post states that verizon tethering will be capped at 2 gigs so how is that better than AT&T 's offering?

Here.

Antenna joke??? Can't wait till iPhone 5, hopefully redundancy will be done with.

This was obviously written by a verizon customer who's convinced that AT&T users can't ever make calls on their phones. Couldn't be further from the truth. Ive been with AT&T for over 15 years and have never had a problem making a call.

This $20/month fee would be on top of the existing voice and data plans and is said to include 2GB of additional data.

WTF? I thought that the $30 data plan gets you UNLIMITED data. What does 2GB of additional data mean? And if it's unlimited data, why should it cost more to allocate some of it to your laptop? It's all the same, greedy company...
Whatever, at least we've got jailbreaking and MiWi.

Pretty disappointing, but I can't say that I'm surprised. No worries, though. I'll be jailbreaking it anyway, so this won't really affect me. And the fact that Verizon will be doing unlimited data for $30 really still puts them far above AT&T, IMO.

A jailbreak should fix this. (not that I care)

I'll just be excited to enable (hack) this feature onto my iPhone 4, AT&T.

Hang up the phone and call them back. If thats your biggest problem, then good for you because im sure many others have bigger problems.

Okay... forgive my stupidity... but what the heck is the big deal about using a hot spot on your smart phone anyway?

Even for someone who's traveled a lot. Been on the run, I can't see what being able to whip out my cell phone and let up to 5 other users link into a pathetic 3G connection anyway? And if I'm not traveling, I'm at home where I have high-speed internet all over anyway?

Other than being a novelty... is there really a practical application to this? I guess if everyone wants to wipe out their laptop around the camp fire and check email, that might be fun for about 2 seconds???

I guess maybe long trips on the road it could be useful if you have a family, but how many of those does anyone take? for a $240 premium a year?

If it was important I'd jailbreak, screw that $20.

I don't think we're getting the full story here. How can they give you unlimited data on the phone and limit tethering? I bet that if you want to be able to tether you have to sign up for a limited plan, just like AT&T. Granted, you may gt 4 gb vs 2 gb but it's still gonna be limited which is bullshiit.

huh?

Data is not free. When someone uses a hotspot, their data usage is almost always going to go up. More data going over the network requires cell tower upgrades, trunk upgrades, and other costs. These things cost money, both in equipment and in people's time to plan..when people start thinking that unlimited data really costs just $30/month.

Not sure how much more of that "unlimited" usage one should have to pay for, but considering the "unlimited" data usage costs $30, $20 is a joke. Really. For some it may make sense, but it is not a very compelling deal.

I have waited patiently for years for the iPhone to come to Verizon, but I actually think I will pass. I have an iPad, and ATT has been fine... and easy to switch on & off (with no contract). Will the tethering fee be addable, or contractual over a two year term (my bet). Will I add a new phone, with a data plan, and another $20 to be able to tether my iPad and dump ATT? No, even for the big $5 a month I would "save" on iPad data. Most likely I am sticking with ATT for now, and resist the urge to add the iPhone. Never thought I would say that either. Everyone complains about ATT, but has one who has been with Verizon for about 10 years, they suck too. Customer service is the pits, the phones fall apart like clockwork 3 months before they are eligible for an upgrade, and they play games with their phones & plans (like reclassifying almost all their phones as "smart" so they can levy a data charge on top, for each phone on your plan).

I can think of one reason to want this (the ability to create an ad hoc network, so you can stream pics from your digital camera to your iPad for previewing, and even that is a stretch, as I would rather just go directly from camera to iPad without the extra hop in the middle).

Free? No, maybe not... but $20 seems a bit greedy (especially if it is contractual). I am not surprised though...
cheers,
michael

Seems like a pretty compelling argument for jailbraking your phone. Overall the costs for tethering are high no matter who you use...

Can't any of you read? Verizon has charged EXTRA for MOBILE HOTSPOT since a phone came on the network that supported it. It CLEARLY says on the website 2GB for the mobile hotspot and UNLIMITED for the phone data.

Verizon Unlimited - $30 - Unlimited Phone Data
Verizon Hotspot - $20 - 2GB Mobile Hotspot
---------------------------
GRAND TOTAL - $50

AT&T Tethering - $45 - Shares 2GB with phone data
---------------------------
GRAND TOTAL - $45

So with Verizon you get unlimited phone and 2gb wifi, AT&T is 2gb limit for the combined phone and tethering.

This isn't tethering though. Tethering is you using your connection on another device, not simultaneously sharing a connection with other people.

Every carrier charges more for this feature on every platform. Sprint charges $29.99 for 4G hotspot on top of your plan, but their 4G data is unlimited, not capped so it probably is a much better deal. Why even have a hotspot feature to share your connection if it's just going to suck away your "not really unlimited data plan?" Oh, yeah, so the carrier can charge you for going over and make money. Right. Right.

I don't think this is really useful for most people. I'm curious to see how Verizon will price LTE plans. If they went the route Sprint did that would be VERY useful and cost effective.

Again, thanks for the semantics, and for shoving it down my throat.

Let me be clear. Here in Australia, no version of iOS 4.3 exists as yet. So explaining to me that it's different, was... well... a bit pointless. But I'm glad you've paid close attention to the minute details. Except for the fact that.... Well, I couldn't comment on a function that, as yet, isn't officially available in Australia.

So, thankfully you picked up this minor discrepancy, and barrelled head-long into an odd explanation as to why my statement was incorrect.

I don't know how to word my statement any more clearly, other than highlighting these key parts:

here in Australia That's right, not America. So discussing the costs related to carriers there isn't particularly pertinent.

I reckon they'll do the same with iOS 4.3 as well I'm guessing I need to clarify this to state 'the iOS 4.3 hotspot as well'.

I will stress again, that the Carrier (in respect to what is happening in the USA) isn't providing the hotspot software and functionality. Pretty much every other country's carriers (or mobile service providers / Mobile company as we like to call them here) have allowed this function to remain unbilled. As after all, they are charging you for the bandwidth TO your phone... and not what you do ON your phone.

Also, I'll add... that I believe this function will actually be very useful. I've used MyWi with my ipad, and my partners iPod touch. I can also see this technology being used for app functionality, allowing stronger networking between devices, and even file sharing. Which will give the iPhone a further grounding in business applications.

I love my jailbroken AT&T iPhone with unlimited data plan and MiWi 4.0. :)

I second that - still grandfathered w/unlimited data.
I am still hoping for price competition, but not really holding my breath.

I pay entirely too much as it is. 2 iphones w/unlimited data, 1 other phone with the MMS data plan, unlimited family sms. With my corporate discount and tax, it's $190 per month. That's a car payment for some. Way too much $$$.

Why is everyone act so surprised? This was really given from the beginning. Verizon is treating iphone as same way as other Droid X and android phones. This plan is much much better than stupid AT&T's plan.

Criminal. $30 a mon for unlimited data. Unless of course you actually want to use it, in which case we need another twenty from ya, so we can charge you $50 a - month for the same 1.4 mb of data.

This should be illegal.

Oh yeah, this doesn't include your voice or txt plans.
