Been trying since 10AM EST but now I'm tired. Since a lot of people are having same issues as me I believe this is a server issue. I got my old sim reactivated by calling Verizon and will attempt to activate my shiny new phone in the evening or maybe even tomorrow.
 
Same issue here. Picked mine up this morning at the Apple Store (super smooth pre-order experience btw) and they activated my phone there, with their POS device. I came home and set up my phone with zero problems. My wife's iPhone X however (also Verizon), won't activate. I've been on the phone with Verizon and Apple, and from what I gather, it seems to be an issue on Apple's side of things.

Ha. Made it to zip/ssn screen only to get activation server error after. had hope for a second
 
Mine just went through after a couple of hours of trying. Finally got the ssn and zip code screen and no problem from there
 
I just got lucky with itunes - turn off your phone and back on and then plug in to USB with itunes open -> verizon activation works
 
Was able to get through and got the screen asking for zip and SSN. I tried my real info and the 0s...both did not work. Now, my iPhone says it's locked and I need to call 1-800-MY-IPHONE. I've had almost every iPhone since 3GS and never had issues.
 
Ugh. I'm getting through but now getting the error about being unable to verify my info.
 
Seems like server opened back up but still tells me billing & social are incorrect. They are correct. I'm beyond frustrated.
 
seems to be coming around for people now. When you get to the ssn/zip screen make sure you use the ssn of the acct holder. mine didnt go through at first but using the other ssn worked and now im cruising through the update and set up process
 
I finally got through guys, just make sure you have your billing zip and code ready (Sprint). Took me 3 hours
 
I was able to activate mine finally. I activated the sim manually with AT&T (www.att.com/activations). Then put the iPhone X in DFU mode. (Plug into computer, Press and release volume up, volume down, press and hold side button until after the apple logo goes away). Select restore. After the restore iTunes processed the activation. I then completed the setup on the phone. Hopefully this helps someone and was not just a fluke.
 
Also finally got through on Verizon- been trying since about 2pm. Should be opening up for people now since I had all the above issues, don't worry, your phone is not bricked.
 
I'm the account holder of my Verizon account & I'm not inputting my social incorrectly (I went to FAFSA to try logging in with my social number and it worked so I'm not remembering it wrong...) and my billing zip code is what it should be... I'm so confused. Why wouldn't it work
 
Tried unsuccessfully for past two hours now. I finally got the telephone number screen, hit next and now after 30 mins the “next” is just a spinning wheel and still stuck on the phone number screen. Phone is locked up. Going to try and turn it off and start over again.

EDITED: rebooted phone. Took my iPhone 7 and disabled Find my iPhone as someone mentioned elsewhere. After reboot and turning off FMI on old device....got through activation on first try. Restoring from iCloud now.
