oh man its getting real real real now. You'd think any more important verizon info would have been let out this week. The 11th is a tuesday, I smell a surprise appearance of El Jobso. :D

Check Steve J's schedule. His he going to be on a flight to NY, between
now and Tuesday?

As a Verizon customer, as much as I would love for this to be the iPhone it most likely won't be. Apple likes to control things too much, and it wouldn't make sense to release it now and then a new model in a few months.

What would make sense for Verizon though is this just being an event to discuss LTE plans. This way they can get excitement behind the phones and the network before they tell everyone they will lose unlimited data and the price will go up.

~~

edit: also, I'll believe it's the iPhone if Gizmodo doesn't get an invite.

Of course, it could be the Verizon iPad, but that seems unlikely because the iPad is due for a refresh in the next couple months, and it would be odd if Verizon got a CDMA refresh for an out-of-date model. (It would be odder still that Verizon announced the new iPad!!!!!)

And, i would think Apple would want to launch iPad on Verizon at its own iPad 2 press event. "And that's our iPad 2, available on AT&T..... oh, and Verizon"

I'm not sure why anyone would want a Verizon CDMA iPhone 4 at this point. New phones in June and CDMA is on it's way out. Just wait 5 months for iPhone 5 at least, possibly with 4G.

Tony

It's too bad because CDMA is the better mechanism. I get signal (Droid X) underground (subways), or in buildings, where iPhones get nothing. That's not an ATT issue, it's the inability of their GSM to penetrate structures the way CDMA does.
Verizon's LTE is going to be GSM (right?), but they are at such different frequencies that things are going to hopefully be better across the board. AT+T's next generation network is way down the road, so who knows when it will make it into their iPhones. Verizon at least has a network up and running, so we can see what the performance is like.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/8B117)

Verizon data - reliable but unbearably slow.

soon to be: unreliable and even slower ... after all AT&T blamed the bloody iPhone users for sucking the life out of the bandwidth ... Those iPhone users even dared to make use of the unlimited data plan, those thief's, ....

Hopefully the day all the "When will Verizon get the iPhone?" threads die on MR

Hopefully.

Why would Apple come out with an updated iPhone now, and then again this summer?

How would this be sharing the spotlight exactly? If it's Apple's product on a new network, it's all about Apple. Plus, secrecy about a Verizon iPhone is maintained if Apple is not mentioned anywhere on the invitation. People will still buy the iPhone on AT&T, oblivious to this event. It's genius.

This makes sense also.

friend at Verizon

I just talked to my buddy who works at Verizon and he said they have training at the of January but they won't tell him what its for, done deal absolutely

I want a Verizon iPhone as much as anyone, but ......

4) why would Verizon drop a bombshell less than a week after CES? Apple doesn't go to CES, so they might do something like this (and have). Verizon just had a huge LTE presentation yesterday (while these invites were being prepared).

sorry, but I don't think this is the VZW iPhone

Dude, you just answered your own question.

Who? The Loop, like MacRumors, is just reporting on it. They didn't claim to have gotten an invitation.

jW

"The Verizon event will be held in New York, according to the invitation received by The Loop."

They DID get an invite

The only update would be the CDMA support - otherwise the same, so not really updated.

I think the better question is: why would anybody buy the Verizon iPhone (4!) now when the next generation iPhone is just around the corner.

Very good point. It would be a bad PR move to release the iPhone 4 on Verizon and then an iPhone 5 (on Verizon or not) in the summer. It makes more sense to release everything together at one time on the latest and greatest hardware.

Again... Apple genius!

Oh yes... a break from the norm... but think about it... what a media frenzy this will be by the 11th.

Oh yes... Steve will be there and I'm sure it's going to be the "surprise of the event" when they introduce him. But the pre-event speculation will run wild because this is NOT THE NORM for Apple.

Genius!

Could be the long rumoured, and much leaked PSP Phone?

I see Verizon iPhone as much more of 'But there is one more thing' at the end of an iPad 2 conference

So does the iPhone (all carriers) completely stop selling four months before the new model comes out?

(hint: no)

I will probably be one snapping it up. I don't think I could stretch another four months out of this old dumbphone.

and how is it bad for PR?

LMAO

Wow, are people really fooled by this?

All Verizon is trying to do is cash on some free publicity.

If Apple was having an event on Tuesday, they would have sent out the invitations by now.

Again I would love for Apple to pre-announce a Verizon iPhone, which will come out in the Summer, just to mess with Verizon. But that's not going to happen either.

But since we're talking about Verizon, I just want to say that I was a Verizon customer for several years before I got an iPhone and it was a bad experience. Dropped calls all of the time and I could not make a call from inside my house. Where the iPhone (original) could.
