Is anyone surprised John Sculley 2.0 introduced Newton 2.0?

Apple’s entire approach is wrong with this device. They wanted to push AR, but instead we got VR with distorted AR. They couldn’t even decide which headband to go with so they included 2 and passed that cost to the user.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Palm 2.0 comes along and steals Apple’s thunder.

And remember - these are the "paid" reviews. Wait til next weekend when the honest reviews come..... this thing is DOA. Gen 2-3 will be the one to get assuming apple gets real with a lot of Tim's insecurities.....
I can trust some opinions better than others. Justine is mostly a fangirl but Joanna Stern is a respected journalist with credibility. Nilay Patel of The Verge got a review unit but he was very critical of the product.

I can’t wait for this to crash and burn. I’d call it Tim’s folly, but his entire tenure of steering Apple toward maximizing shareholder (and not user) value is his true folly.
You are welcome to your opinion, but it seems quite the overstatement. Was the huge move to M series processors a folly also? Yes, Tim needs to balance stockholder and user considerations. It’s not easy. I am heavily invested as a user and moderately invested as a stockholder, and do not see his tenure as a “folly”. I am sure there are millions of others who agree.

At times marketing people make mistakes, at other times they are malicious dirt bags who lie and mischaracterize the product and the competition to gain advantage. Should they set realistic expectations? I suppose that depends on whether you they hold to a foundational ethical principle that the means and the ends must always be independently justifiable or whether they follow the foundational principle of capitalism, what I call Milton Friedman's unswerving economic principle, that the end always justifies the means.
Thank you for such an elaborate answer, but we're talking about Apple here. Are they know to be malicious dirt bags and mischaracterize the product?

It seems odd that Brian Tong claims he “pre-ordered” the Vision Pro, when he already had it for a week, even though Apple’s shipping date is February 2. In the preorder video, he chose February 2nd as the pickup date. Did he actually buy it? Apple is probably giving away Vision Pro headset to influencers for “reviews”. That’s fine if they do that, but influencers should be honest and disclose they got the unit for free.
Reviewers typically have to return the review device after a set amount of time.

I think the difference between Sculley's Apple and Cook's Apple is that Cook's possesses to capital to grind at this product until they shape it into something worthwhile. There is a good chance this is a much different product a half decade from now than it is today.

All anyone wanted was an Apple developed media consumption headset. $1500-2000 max. Having controllers and the ability to connect to a Mac/PC for VR games would have been a plus. No one wants or needs a face computer to edit video and write memos.

“Taking the headset off to work on my laptop, my eyes need time to settle and refocus. I feel myself slipping into long sessions in Vision Pro, but my eyes want me to take breaks.”

This is my biggest concern. It’ll be interesting to see if eye doctors start becoming vocal about how bad this thing is for your eyes. That’s one issue that could be a big problem for VR across the board.

He said the review unit was a loaner in his unboxing video. He is also buying one for himself.

All you need to do is watch his video review. There's a segment where he discusses his purchase and shows the amount he spent.

I can say that I’m looking forward to future, cheaper iterations. This is new territory in technology and right now it’s not worth it, but future refinement will be coming.

The Verge review was by far the best. And summarised it beautifully.

(Sic) “Its the loneliest piece of technology you can buy”.
Not sure what that's even supposed to mean. Zoom calls are lonelier when you're wearing the screen?

I think the question is, when does this product get its "iPad 2 / iPhone 4" moment. Or, will it be The New iPad retina w/ 30 pin 2012 moment 😜

Cheaper non-pro versions won't have all the same functionality. I tend to doubt that the Pro version price will really drop that much.

They can dump the external facing screen and all the heavy metals whenever they're ready. I'm ready for plastic "blinders" that weigh half as much ;)

I myself was intrigued by this product. But now after watching the reviews, see that this isn’t product I would spend $3500 on. Being a wealthy industrialist I have enough money to buy and sell men like myself everyday, but I think I’ll take the $3500 and use it towards building a rollercoaster instead.

Should put it towards that silver mine in Peru.

Why isn't the Meta Quest 3 half as much? 1.1 pounds versus AVP 1.3 pounds.

The reports coming out that a person sitting next to you can put their hands in front of your face, and click your icons with their finger movements might be a dealbreaker for this thing. I can see the cases where someone spends $3700 on this thing, goes to brag about it and show it off to his/her "friends", and those "friends" teach them a lesson about showing off (and might be a bit jealous their friend could drop almost $4k on a "toy"), just sit there on each side of them and mess with them mercilessly by trying to click their icons, until the owner gets so frustrated, they take it off and realize they cannot use it around anyone.

Kind of like how I cannot use Siri voice dictation on CarPlay for text messages, because my "friends" in the car constantly add extra words to my dictated messages (like me sending a text to my wife: "I'll be home soon" them adding: "with the hookers and cocaine" me: "SIRI!! CANCEL! CANCEL!")

And yes... I need new "friends"...

Gen. 4 will be the one to buy.
Apple will need to cut back on their greedy prices.
Remove the front display. Lighter plastic version, make the 2 headbands optional. And also battery optional (that 3700 miliamp battery is just way way way too expensive).
Remove the charger and maybe even the cable also.
Cut back on all the accessories and not because they say its to save the environment but to cut the price.
I want the headset but not the super crazy overpriced accessories.
Sadly I’ll be dead by then.

Why does it even need a front screen and glass? Those are pointless and meaningless features that they need to remove.
Hello Apple Vision Air! Losing the glass front and front facing display will shed off quite a bit of weight (and bulk).
