Well I've been trying to get debian to install for almost 2 years! I'm distro surfing. But is the latest debian sid on 64 bit any good? I would prefer that. I was a heavy Ubuntu user too. :)

Guys, 5.13 broke my X on PowerBook A1010 NVIDIA Corporation NV34M [GeForce FX Go5200] (rev a1).
It boot to console, but when it starts X, the screen goes blank and Ctrl-Alt-Fx does not help, too.
As I remember, that was the same (or almost the same) with 5.11.
A temporary bug? Does The Author know?

@Huffandy : Not sure about Debian 64-bit, but the 32-bit release is solid. I run Ubuntu on my G5's for browser development purposes. Mainly 12.04 remix with recompiled updated software and a custom 4.x kernel as it's fast and stable.

@dreadbit : I'd report it to their github page. Then i'd select the last working kernel you used from the grub boot menu until 5.13 is fixed.

Cheers

I installed and tested the Eolie WebKit web browser on Void Linux today and it works better than Epiphany. It loads websites very fast. You don't need to start it with the activated variable "WEBKIT_DISABLE_COMPOSITING_MODE".

Eolie

Jacadcaps (MorphOS) and Daniel Kolesa (Void PPC Linux) have fixed the JavaScript BE regressions and have added some big endian patches to WebKitGTK. The Linux WebKit web browser with all these big endian changes is called Eolie and is available for Void PPC Linux. This browser is very fast and can also display javascript-intensiv web sites.

Screenshot of Eolie on the A-EON AmigaOne X1000:

Yes I have the same issue with my PowerBook DSLD with an Radeon 9700 (so no exclusively Nouveau issues only). That's a point that I like in Void, that you can choose your kernel in the GRUB screen an test it / use it until the maintainer solves those problems.

Thanks for the browser suggestion and finally an alternative, but in my PowerBook DSLD with an G4 1.67Ghz isn't much speedier comparing with @wicknix browsers (thanks for that!).

I tested in many sites that I use (I don't like hyper-modern on-demand self loading monsters that are called "sites" but eventually I use) including my online-banking and it was much faster than others like Midori etc but InterWeb, FadedOrb etc rendered at least 50% faster (my machine it's maxed with 2gb RAM and SSD, the system it's very responsive in general). I tried the MorphOS system and Wayfarer and was I think 25% faster than the Linux "equivalent" (Eolie) so kudos to MorphOS devs.

Unfortunately my iMac G5 it's disassembled to repair and I can't compare in a 64-bits Linux but Firefox it's slow (for obvious reasons like "modern code").

I would love to see alternatives but in x86-64 we don't have many real alternatives I'm glad that at least we have Eolie and ArcticFox & company.

A quick question for the more knowledgable people here compiling from source.
I got a Void ppc (iBook G4) glibc install with cmake installed, I'm trying to compile dynamips with cmake but cmake doesn't seem to do anything, it starts and then sits idle not doing anything for hours ... ?

I had tried another compile with cmake in the past also on this machine and thought it was related to that specific source but now the same behaviour pops up.

Hi All, I managed to get Void working on my G5 with FX5200. It works really well apart from the colours not being correct in firefox when displaying some pictures. Initially they appear looking normal and then within a couple of seconds they change to having a blue tint.

As per previous posters comments I tried switching to version 4 of the Kernel but that didn't make any difference.

Does anyone know where the problems lies? Is it specific to firefox or a driver issue? Thought I'd post before doing any more troubleshooting, will do some more troubleshooting if nobody knows.

Thanks

Hi. You could use Eolie instead. It's in the official repository. It think colors will always be messed in Firefox because G5 are big-endians.

I will give that a try, thanks. What is it that Firefox doesn't like about big-endians?

My limited understanding is that colours are read in the wrong order, making them appear like a negative (FF0000 for red becomes 0000FF, blue).

Thanks mate, I tried Eolie for a few mins and images now appear ok but video's still have the blue tint. I will try again later.

Eolie doesn't seem to be quite as snappy but the interface does look nice.

Void Linux is now runnig on my G5 with Nvidia 6800 Ultra

How:
Boot Live DVD with NVIDIA GeForceFX 5200 (or a working GPU you have by hand)
Install Void https://docs.voidlinux-ppc.org/installation/live-images/guide.html (partition tool is a bit tricky)
Postinstall with the optional Terminal at the end of the Installation:
xbps-install -Su
xbps-install nano
mkdir -p /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nouveau.conf

add Code from awilfox (thx :))
#49

Shut down, insert 6800 Ultra, boot Void.

i get some hard shut dows with the 5 kernel, the 4.4 looks ok until now.

At the momet i have a second screen but i dont know why.
Can anyone tell me the command to add "video=TV-1:d video=TV-2:d video=offb:eek:ff nosplash" to grub?

Finally - reinstalled :). Working KDE !!! BTW, I've set hold on grub & grup-powerpc-ieee1275 packages, last installation of Void crashed when I've made packages upgrade.

How did you get the "OpenGL: renderer: NV43 v: 2.1 Mesa 20.2.1" to work? All my Nvidia cards only using the llvnpipe

Is the a way (xbps-install) to install all packages who starts with "mate"?
